Oh I'm sorry not runc, we've apparently moved on to crun, because the one thing this tower of madness needed was to rewrite its foundation in a fully unsafe language, sure why not

I was last immersed in this world over five years ago, and it's baffling how little has changed. Same problems, different project logos.

Giving up on configuring to send e-mails. No matter what I try, it can't authenticate to my mail server. "Password mismatch" though it works without problems when I connect with my normal e-mail client, so I know the password is correct. I tried putting the password as PASSWORD and without the backticks in app.ini, no luck.

SOLVED: The key in app.ini is named PASSWD not PASSWORD.

    Wer von euch lebt in einem Wasser-Versorgungsbereich mit großer Wasserhärte, hat eine Entkalkungsanlage im Haus und kann/möchte dazu ein paar Erfahrungen mit mir teilen?

    Nachbearbeitung: im Thread wurden schon mehrfach BWT-Geräte erwähnt, daher interessieren mich auch Erfahrungen mit der Integration solcher Geräte in Home Assistant — eventuell mit der Integration im Link unten.

    @xahteiwi Wir haben seit vier Wochen eine Entkalkungsanlage um von 21 °fH (die Schweizer messen nicht in °dH) auf ein Niveau zu kommen welches mit der Frischwasserstation kompatibel ist. Aktuell kämpfen wir noch damit, dass sie zu viel enthärtet und unser Wasser auf 0 °fH reduziert. Muss da jetzt mal den Techniker kommen lassen.

    tongpu,
    @tongpu@hachyderm.io avatar

    @xahteiwi Techniker war heute da und hat das Verschneideventil justiert und jetzt haben wir 6 °fH und die Seife geht endlich wieder von den Händen ab. 😁

    Consider the typical annual income of a certified, licensed master plumber in your country (look it up if you don't know). Then compare that to what you consider a fair and solid income for a qualified, highly experienced software engineer in your country. How does the software engineer's income compare?

    (Boosts and comments welcome.)

    The software engineer's income is:

    tongpu,
    @tongpu@hachyderm.io avatar

    @xahteiwi In Switzerland an experienced software engineer might earn more than a master plumber, but definitely not double the income.
    Sadly the very detailed salary statistics provided by Salarium are currently not available, so you'll have to do due with the less detailed wage levels: https://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/en/home/statistics/work-income/wages-income-employment-labour-costs/wage-levels-switzerland.html

    The EU plans to pass laws that will force services like Uber and Deliveroo to classify millions of gig workers as employees

    I’ve long argued you could only have 2 out of 3 of

    • well paid gig workers
    • low prices
    • profitable platform

    The EU has now mandated the first. Deliveroo decided to leave Spain after a similar law was passed. Now what for food delivery in the EU?

    People have been saying automation will enable people to work lessand have more leisure time for decades. AI isn’t going to create 3.5 day workweeks because capitalism abhors a vacuum.

    Companies won’t give you an extra paid day off. They will either find more work to fill your days or cut your hours and won’t pay you.

    Companies can’t even handle the significant win that is remote work without forcing you to commute to work to take your Zoom calls from the office.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-10-02/dimon-sees-ai-giving-a-3-1-2-day-workweek-to-the-next-generation?trk=storyline-feed_main-feed-storyline-activity-card_feed-article-content

    I'm coming to the realisation that trying to live a kind, fair, and rational existence is living life on hard mode, and I wonder if it's wearing me down.

    Almost everywhere I look I see raging assholes and clueless dipshits rising to the top (or already being there), and fucking things up for everyone.

    My fediverse bubble being a pleasant exception to this rule, I thought I'd ask here: anyone got coping strategies, other than joining the assholes and no longer giving a fuck?

    tongpu,
    @tongpu@hachyderm.io avatar

    @xahteiwi It's hard to stick to ones principles and not solely talk the talk, but actually walk the walk.

    I recently had a discussion where the argument was that they only decided to take the plane for a flight within Germany, because the train was 10 times more expensive.

    They work in IT with a pretty good salary, just like I do, if the plane ticket was EUR 25 and the train ticket was EUR 250, then it would definitely not have ruined them to take the train.
