🆕 blog! “Using disposable phone numbers for better security”

Last night I received a call from my bank. They'd detected an unusual transaction and wanted to make sure that it was legitimate. Had I recently purchased £10,000 worth of crypto in the Maldives? What?!!? No! ARGH! I started to panic. All my apes money gone! No. Wait. The other thing. I kn…

@Edent when my Dad gets one of these, he starts talking to them in a made-up language until they hang up. Which is hilarious to witness.

I first met Molly Holzschlag at one of the first web events I ever spoke at. She was an inspiring speaker, an inspiring person and a tireless campaigner for a better web. Sorry to hear of her passing. https://www.tucsonsentinel.com/local/report/090523_molly_holzschlag/

So how's your week going?

torgo,
@torgo@mastodon.social avatar

@mattwilcox sorry! I should have CWd it. :) On the whole, everyone I've spoken to at the (4) organisations involved so far seem to be on top of it. But apparently you don't legally need anything besides someones name, address and birthdate to open up a bank account in their name? I know when I opened a Monzo account I needed to take a picture of my passport and a selfie, so at least some banks seem to be more rigorous.

Can journalists please just start saying "In a social media post, [person] said …" rather than talking about a specific platform? I think I'm about done reading "On X, formerly known as Twitter" or whatever.

@krinkle @gregkamprath absolutely. Linking to source is good. However links (and embeds) can become stale, so quoting the source in the text is important.

    @1br0wn "depth information"? I'm OK with WhatsApp knowing my location, but not how shallow I am – that's private.

    Not important in the scheme of things, but...

    I really really struggle with how the major style guides say to decapitalize "Internet" and "Web." These are not generic things. There is not more than one Internet or more than one (World Wide) Web. They are proper nouns for singular things. When we decapitalize them, we forget that these come from a specific history, and that history could have been done differently.

    @torgo@mastodon.social avatar

    @robin @ntnsndr I think the drive to de-capitalize web everywhere became a point of dogma – something that could be used to differentiate the new guard from the old guard. I wasn't (and am still not) willing to die on that hill, but I still think it's misguided.

    The gift of bank fraud game through my letter box today. A new bank card from Virgin Money. Except that I never opened an account with Virgin Money. But whoever DID open the account seemed to know my birthdate, address and marital status. Whee! Anyway the bank was very efficient at closing the account and escalating to the fraud department so I … think I'm in the clear?
