Bluesky enthusiasts are stating that Bluesky has ”plans” to make ATProto universal and transfer it to W3C or the like. Well, there is no evidence that Bluesky wants to give up control or the protocol is going to be widely adopted after 5 years of development so forgive me being sceptical. The story is a bit different with ActivityPub.

@rolle agree. If they were serious about this, they would commit to participate in social web working group and to moving toward full federation with the rest of the , instead of scoffing at anyone who raises these points.

I had to look at a Twitter message for work reasons yesterday. I did it in a private tab. I still felt like I needed to wash afterwards. However it struck me that I don't think I've actually read anything off of Twitter for over a year and a half at this point. For me, the has largely replaced it.

You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?

@Edent my rule is never to give any information to someone who calls me - ever. I don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognise, which I think also deters this kind of scam. If I get a notification, receive a letter in the post (has happened), or get a call about fraud, I call the bank on the number on my card or on their web site.

I really do not understand what is going on with . It seems like he brought this on himself by reneging on green pledges and thereby sabotaging the coalition with the Green Party? What was he thinking? Or am I not understanding? https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/apr/29/humza-yousaf-steps-down-as-scottish-first-minister-snp

Law enforcement is asking - yet again - for access to encrypted communications. This post tries to succinctly summarise why that's a bad idea.

@mnot this reminds me of an article from 2015 by @pluralistic in reference to another planned government assault on end-to-end encryption: “But Whatsapp isn’t like a insurance agency with our applications in its file-drawers – it’s like a cafe where we pop in for a chat. Cafes have never been required install hidden microphones in the salt-cellars that could be activated with a court order. The state has never had the power to listen in on all our conversations.“ 🧂

I have to say I really appreciated the Seattle Convention Center "Summit" building where the Open Source Summit was held last week. It's a really beautiful, airy space with tons of natural light.

Very pleased that @w3c has published its updated (which is now appropriately named a "code of conduct"). I'm proud to be one of the individuals named as having contributed into this document. https://www.w3.org/policies/code-of-conduct/

torgo,
@torgo@mastodon.social avatar

@aral I agree with you. However we only have the power to set policy inside the @w3c itself. So this document is about moderating behaviour on mailing lists, in physical meetings and events, in GutHub threads, etc... We can't stop people pursuing unethical business models, but the thinking behind this, and documents like the Ethical Web Principles https://www.w3.org/TR/ethical-web-principles/, is to ensure these business models don't get baked into the fabric of the web itself.
