I didn’t know that there is a series of Dune books.

Are the movies based on the book “Dune” or the entire series?

I was going to buy the book tonight, now I’m not sure I want to commit!

I took part in an intensive Irish course at the weekend and went to a higher level then I normally go.

It was head melty but excellent.

I absolutely curse the school system for not teaching proper grammar though, it feels like I'm on the back foot with some of the concepts because I don't fully "get" them for English, let alone Irish.

Quite a few other learners are either much older, and were taught these concepts, or language nerds, so learned them via other languages.

Completed the main storyline of Tears of the Kingdom this evening.

I know you’re sick of hearing about how good a game it is; but it is such a good game.

Still plenty of side quests to do; and tonnes of map to properly explore.

Are you still enjoying it?

Do you have recommendations for a networked (can get data from an app), HomeKit enabled air quality sensor?

Don't need a specific data point measured, just something that acts as a proxy for "air quality getting better/worse".

Battery-powered would be preferred, sockets are at a premium!

I've grumbled about the MacOS Dock to several people in the last week.

Turns out I've been grumbling since at least 2015 😅

https://tosbourn.com/hide-the-dock/

I will def be editing it though, 2015 me moved the dock over to the left for some childish reason. 🙃

Went to cancel our TV license because we don’t watch anything on TV.

Found out it would make it illegal to watch any live footage; even on YouTube or Amazon Prime.

That seems biccies to me.

I've started down a copy editing rabbit hole and I'm loving it.

I wanted to remove the word "basically" from any old blog post where it didn't make sense. (you don't "basically, do something" you "do something")

As I was going through I kept on finding other examples of words that could be clipped.

  • essentially
  • probably
  • possibly
  • just
  • you need to
  • trivial

This isn't even the full list!

80% of the time the sentence reads better without further edits

Quick git tip. If you want to remove any local branches that have since been merged you can run this.

git branch --merged | egrep -v "(^\*|dev|main)" | xargs git branch -d

I have it as a TextExpander shortcut, but you could also add an alias

It looks for any branch that isn't dev or main (add any you always want to keep around) that has been merged in and deletes them.

This is helpful if you rely on tab-to-autocomplete a lot

Just finished The Light Fanstastic by Terry Pratchett.

I enjoyed it a lot, I’m not sure if there are more Rincewind books but whilst I enjoyed him as a character, I’m looking forward to reading about another part of the Disc next

Three things I’ve done recently; that if you run a website you might like to do;

  1. Removed Twitter specific meta tags - at this point it’s wasted bytes. Stick to open graph stuff.
  2. Updated links from Twitter accounts to their website - a good 70% we’re clearly abandoned accounts
  3. Removed links to tweets - they are paywalled now.

This reduces page weight; gives crawlers less work to do; and improves user experience.

Please, when you're using hashtags use camel case.

Having all the words run together is rubbish for legibility and accessibility.

I’m learning Irish at a wee place in East Belfast called Turas.

Last night we had an awards thing; folk got badges for various levels of Irish. I got the very first level you can get (https://mastodon.ie/@tosbourn/110552700091751570)

The award was handed to me by the leader of the UUP, and one of my classmates is the ex-leader of the PUP.

If you’d asked me 15 years ago if that situation could ever unfold in Belfast; I’d have laughed.

Things are getting better.

Just thinking about pre ORM development, when you really thought about the type of the data. You'd get really punished if you didn't think hard about it.

The opposite is almost true now, think too hard and you end up doing something that gives your ORM (and therefore you) more work and headaches.

I think I've decided I don't like Slack, or Teams, or Discord.

I think I'd much prefer an open protocol that can be consumed however people want.

For 90% of the reasons I use Slack, I could easily use Mastodon.

Weirdly happy to see this ad on the Newtownards Road. It would be nice if thugs would fuck off forever but assuming they won’t, it’s nice they don’t have as much visible sway any more.

The East Belfast I knew as a kid would have had this vandalised or destroyed at the very hint of anti-paramilitary talk.

Not pictured, the giant UVF mural just beside it. Baby steps.

If I could inject one bit of knowledge into everyone who owns a Mac laptop it would be;

You Can Hide The Dock

I know folk who 100% never use the Dock, yet they allow it all that screen real estate. It makes me sad.

I kinda wanna play some Fallout but I distinctly remember not enjoying the mechanics of one of the games I played at an unknown time and on an unknown device.

Might wait a few months and see what second hand copies are flying around.

I’d heard people say that tattoos hurt more the older you get.

They weren’t lying. I wouldn’t say I’m heavily tattooed but I’ve got plenty of large tattoos and this last one was definitely the hardest.

I was able to sit for the 5-6 hours needed but was very close to tapping out, which has never happened before.

If you’re thinking about getting a tattoo, do it and do it now! It will hurt more tomorrow!

I’m working on a project that has some memory issues with their jobs.

Used a memory profiler, one job made just over 1,000,000,000 memory allocations (billion, with a b!)

I’ve my work cut out, but I think I’m gonna learn a tonne about memory best practice
