I want to play a new fun Star Trek game! And this one fits the bill nicely especially because previous games made by these devs were hours of enjoyment. I trust in their ability to tell a great story!

I'm thinking seriously about getting Google out of my life, and trying NextCloud.

Looking to get a personal account through a managed provider.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

How does it compare to ownCloud?

Any hosts I should look at or avoid?

Any apps I should get for it, or avoid?

Any issues I should be aware of before I switch?

If you ever decide to self-host and not use a managed provider, take this advice: install it on an SSD (fastest possible you can).

Not only that, the interpreter will point directly to the line of code and possibly to the exact character that is the problem. Any programmer worth anything would find the issue or, worst case, retype the line of code and have the problem fixed rather quickly. “Illegal character” is a pretty easy error to diagnose.

But…I still chuckled a little at the intent of the joke. I’m sure there are better pranks one could come up with, though.

@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

The answer to that is…yes.

I like the concept of atomic distros, but the implementation leaves a lot to be desired for me. Having to reboot after installing any software seems counterproductive to me (admittedly this was my very limited experience when I tried Bazzite).

Learned something new, thank you! I’m old school so it’s going to take some time to acclimate I think.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Well I’m not on it anymore because it frustrated this old aging brain. I’m currently on Garuda. But I may give it a go in a VM again.

@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding the intent here, but doesn’t “heading towards peak” literally mean “increase” in this context?

who is on Lemmy (the sociology of Lemmy)

I dont know if this has been asked before or if this may be a little goofy of a question but I didn’t see anything relating to it and I’m kinda curious what the culture of Lemmy is like and what sort of common things people see. ive been paying attention to interactions but nothing is as good as just asking everyone.

You and me both. I’d rather it just be Pop!OS. Or just, Pop. Or the better term: Soda.

I love the fact that System76 is an American company pushing Linux forward (well to certain degrees, anyway). I know they use hardware produced in other countries (for chassis at minimum, not sure about the rest of the components), but it’s still nice to see.

Next time I’m in the market for a laptop, I’ll certainly give them a solid look (hopefully the form factors of the more powerful systems will be less…girthy…by then).

Pop!_OS is quite solid. I’ve used it from time to time. However, I’m partial to Arch because I like to be closer to the bleeding edge (currently using Garuda for my gaming rig).

@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Edit: the linux-company thing is just for triggering people, sorry I didn’t know it was this effective.

So you’re a dick. Got it.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

He literally admitted to posting to trigger people. I’m stating fact that by doing so he’s being a dick. The motives of the person matters and he came in here with the purpose of pissing people off.

Clearly it worked for some.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I couldn’t care less about the original post, but I will also call people out in the hopes that they stop being a dick to others. Anyone who enjoys seeing people get agitated needs to have their head examined.

@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

The first step in fixing your problem is admitting you have one. Good job!

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Some people don’t like to read, and/or don’t like truth and facts spoken/written to them. So they take offense to logic and reason, which is what you had in your answer.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

while making such weak arguments

Perhaps…

Idiot.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

You asked for an example, he gave you one. Then you try to discredit it with a red herring illogical argument.

You should take your temporary ban and reflect on what is truly important in your life. Because you clearly need some help.

I will probably never agree on much with Duncan, but on this I completely agree. Trump is an aberration that must be extinguished from the collective psyche of this country and the world. And I sincerely hope that happens sooner than later. Far too many who apparently can’t think for themselves, clothe in and bask in their hatred, their fear, and their ignorance like it’s a badge of honor.

It’s time to stop listening to them and stop giving such insanity a platform.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Asking for and/or expecting unpaid volunteers is most definitely not valid.

If he wants to pay them properly, then I would agree.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

So basically don’t be stupid when on a network you don’t control. I mean I would think that would be common sense by now. Just because you’re on a VPN doesn’t mean that the local network doesn’t have some semblance of capabilities.

And maybe I read it wrong, but perhaps don’t use DHCP on a network you don’t control. Wouldn’t that wholly mitigate this?

I get that this is concerning for people who don’t know any better. But I don’t think it’s as devastating as the title makes it sound.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Much more likely it’s a doctored photo just to make the joke. Either way, it’s sad.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

You’re on beehaw, and are spouting that Trump/FOX-level inferiority complex bullshit?

Either you’re trolling and/or joking…or you can rightly fuck off.

ulkesh,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

The simple fact you use terms like “libtard” proves the abundance of undereducation you have received. Enjoy living with such idiocy. Bye.
