This , I hope you'll consider supporting @rOpenSci. rOpenSci seeks to break down barriers to accessing knowledge and democratize science, by building tools and community to enable open research. We focus on the researchers and applications that aren't served by commercial tech: the "long tail" of scientists and research engineers that need to work together to build a community of support.

We're planning to do a bunch of outreach in 2024 in the community of people working with open data and open source energy system models (hopefully with support from NSF POSE and maybe Sloan) and it seems adjacent to the kind of work being done by @pyOpenSci & @leahawasser

Do y'all think this would be a good potential community partnership?

We made a post in their Discourse here:
https://pyopensci.discourse.group/t/engaging-the-open-energy-modeling-data-community/401

Also, while all of our own work is done in , we're moving to a model of distributing data products rather than a sprawling data processing pipeline application (it'll stay open source if you want to see it or contribute, but most users don't need or want to see how the open data sausage is made!).

So to find a wider set of potential end users maybe it would also make sense to talk to the folks at @rOpenSci and @us_rse

I enjoyed the first @us_rse conference. All attendees were named "unicorns" because there is not yet any direct track to becoming an RSE.

Makes me wonder what to call this of us engaged with the arts and humanities - a decidedly small minority of RSEs.

Had a great time at the first ever US-RSE society meeting organized by @us_rse

A good place to talk about all the things the people who use our software don’t want to hear about.

Last session at has started. Great conference with lots of interesting discussions and topics. Plenty of material to go through for an episode on this event (out mid November). Thanks to @us_rse for their support and help. And, yes, I just joined 😃

Cool that Python is finally coming to excel. I got started with code running inside ArcGIS. Being able to take first steps with Python and not have to also figure out installation, dependencies, IDE, etc. at same time will get a lot of people started on learning to code.

Last year I joined a bunch of very clever people in Chicago for a few days and we put together the bones for a handbook on how to hire, manage and retain data scientists and research software engineers in academic settings. It's now out!

Boosts are welcome - we hope this will be helpful for a lot of people working in the software-producing corner of academia. Thanks to the folks at ADSA and @us_rse for putting it together!
