Day 95 of - Yet another spacer board. My PCB fab must hate me for these.

Day 172 of - Yes, I am crazy enough to make this. Well, at least when LCSC gets my favourite RGB LEDs back in stock.

Presenting the Kilopixel rack display, a 1U RGB display for your rack.

Show titles, status, charts and other information in full RGB. Also usable for source indicators in broadcast plants, and anywhere else a 1U device will fit!

Day 66 of - A rack front panel representing a transmission line. This uses the same LED and controller boards as the breaker-and-a-half front panel, which simplifies a whole bunch of things.

EDID hell again. Windows boot screen displays, then "No Signal". :(

TFW a file format is so old that it includes an "insert paper tape this way" arrow as part of the header: Looks like this traces back to the PDP-11.

This is not the behaviour I was expecting from a PTC fuse trip. I expected the trickle current to be way lower than the hold current, not equal to the hold current.

Below: A chart showing prolonged overcurrent of 1A through a 500 mA PTC fuse, with the resistance increasing until the current stabilizes at 500 mA, where it remains constant.

Day 108 of - Couldn't post this last night, but Mastodon is working again, so here goes.

This is a front panel for a four-channel level meter, with two control buttons per channel. This connects into a larger system that I'm building.

It's been a long day re-doing all my PTP/1588 infrastructure.

Things are finally coming back online, though...

Computer build is slowly coming together:

Got a different PoE switch to replace the HP 1950 switch I was previously using. The 1950 just had too many problems reliably sourcing PoE power.

I'm replacing it with a 2910al.

Moving from 2015 technology backwards to 2013 technology!

Why does no one sell rack panels with 1/4 DIN 92mm cutouts?

Spent too many hours fighting with I2C today.

No ACK from the target, even though everything looks just fine on the wire, and matches the datasheet.

Sigh. I'll try again tomorrow.

Day 190 of - I always thought one of these would have helped me back in my classes, so I made one!

It's an ALU trainer, which allows you to experiment with how an actual ALU functions.

Day 119 of - A front panel for a power/interface module. This will provide MIDI and serial I/O, and interface to the other boards to allow for firmware updates and to communicate with software that runs on the computer.

Day 275 of

My brain: "You have so many in-progress projects you should work on finishing."

My brain: "..."

My brain: "Time to start another new project".

This will be a three-rail voltage and current monitor for systems. It has two displays so you will be able to see everything at once, and can have graphs and other fun visualizations.

And I'll be able to use it as base to connect to other modules via UART when I need an extended UI.

Day 220 of .

I think I am crazy enough to actually do this.

Presenting a crazy wide step sequencer based around the rack display I finished up:

Trying to bring up another piece of equipment. It boots up, I get a network link light, it passes through "Initialize...", and displays a status, but isn't showing up on the network. No response to arp.

Doesn't recognize a USB keyboard, either.

Going to see if I can dig up any documentation...

I'm using an unholy combination of GPIO and PIO right now, writing using PIO, and reading via GPIO, and dynamically switching the clock pin between the two subsystems.

It works, but this sure feels like the sort of thing that will break across IC revisions...

Bringing up some serial terminal servers...

First one doesn't seem to boot.

Second one doesn't respond on the recovery IP address.

Trying a third one...

It's time to order some PCBs!

First difficulty — JLCPCB's web site no longer works on Safari. I have to use Firefox instead.

The BOM functionality in EasyEDA seems to be broken right now.

R1 is 4.3K and R2 and R3 are 5.1K in the properties, but the BOM is saying that all of them are 4.3K. Same results in the BOM view and the Export BOM.

Going to see if their order system has the same problem.

Got a few relatively newer Grass Valley control panels for a really good price because they were damaged. Let's take a look inside:

Looks like a pretty stock SBC, with dual DisplayPort, USB3, Ethernet and an integrated touchscreen controller. Looks like GV designed the main board, though I suspect that the CPU is COTS.

It boots into Windows.

Great. iPhotos won't open any more.

I hate computers, and the feeling is mutual.

All four gate inputs are now working on the Eurorack module I am building.

Time to get the gate outputs working now!
