So I have been a part of this community for a while and it seems pretty quiet. I know Lemmy is not as big as Reddit so this community will always be much smaller but I kind of miss the activity on r/sysadmin. Infinity for Reddit still works for view only so I have been scrolling though posts on Reddit as some of the stories and...
Yup I’ve thought about this recently and I think the big problem is people expect Reddit when Reddit evolved over time. Here you have hundreds of subs existing where the user base doesnt match the need for it.
Use Canada as an example. I’m sure on Reddit Canada started first then as it grew the need for provinces and cities. Here we have Canada and I’m sure provinces and cities. Everyone should just be in Canada. When the user base grows it will naturally splinter to smaller like minded communities.
We are trying to rebuild the wheel when the wheel is not needed.
Because everything is through an app now. God forbid you call a cab or the restaurant directly to order your food?
I get pizza every other week from my local pizza joint. Delivery driver is always the same and I know a shit app like Uber eats isn’t taking a cut for jack shit.
The problem is we want more for less. People need to understand for the things they want they have to pay more and we aren’t there yet. People don’t give a shit. They want cheap and disposable.
Here’s the laugh though. Read “Democracy in America” by Alex de Tocqueville. A large part of it is observations amounting to “these fuckwits need to be aware of what they’re doing and in many cases they are not”
It’s all through the book. I also have a copy on my bookshelf and have read it.
I guess to be clear, I’m not referring to America alone in my response and even though his observations were largely on America what he writes about can be applied generally.
One simple example is how he states something like “I don’t know if America would vote the best people if they ran for office. We know they exist but they clearly don’t enter politics.”
It’s an extremely polite way to say “we aren’t getting the best or brightest running for office but that’s ok cause we’re so fucking dumb we probably wouldn’t vote for them anyways.”

Another android user here. What you say is true but doesn’t matter. I also stopped using Signal when sms was dropped. For some people a unified app that wasn’t Google or WhatsApp was what we needed.

Not religious but was watching a video this morning where Neal Brennan and Howie Mandel were discussing death. I stopped and looked at my tea and said to myself “I’ll miss this” (the tea).
