I submitted a comment to the FCC regarding my disapproval of direct-to-cell satellites. Please consider adding your voice to help preserve the night sky and the sensitive environments of Earth’s upper atmosphere and low-Earth orbit. You can find specific details on what you can do at https://www.kesslerrebellion.com/take-action. The FCC is open to taking comments from individuals around the world, not just in the USA.

Very wonderful (and rightly depressing) public presentation by @sundogplanets this evening in Toronto. Thank you for your advocacy and for coming to this urban centre to share and inspire us. Please consider joining your voice and working together to secure a cleaner environment, safer future, and improved access to dark skies by going to https://www.kesslerrebellion.com/take-action.

An auditorium with large screens displaying a presentation about joining groups fighting for regulation in space, with logos, QR codes, and contact information. Professional astronomer Dr Lawler is standing in front of the screen, and the audience seating area is partially visible.

Cherry Blossoms by Robarts Library, University of Toronto

Each year I appreciate each flower’s beauty in its own season a little more. I reflect on occasion what the planet must have been like eons ago before flowers came to be. I’m grateful for the current era of the universe that enables the complexity of life. I try to cherish the magnificence of it.

It was pretty cloudy, but we managed to catch totality.

I bought winter tires for the first time (I know I know, I should have gotten them before, but I'm a dumb warm-weather transplant to this frozen place). I think now my tires are worth more than the rest of my 400k-km car, ouch.

I'm grateful to be able to afford winter tires, but man it would sure be nice if I didn't have to be 100% reliant on having a car that can make it across Antarctica to campus. Big downside of living on a farm and working in a city. (Upside: baby goats.)

@sundogplanets This was my life growing up. Even now, when the autumn comes I still feel an impulse to pick up everything off the ground and put it away. I still have the feeling that if I don’t clean it up before the first snowfall, I may never see it again.

I love hearing your stories here. Thank you for sharing.

Impressive thunderstorm east of Regina a little while ago. Dropped half an inch of much-needed rain on us in about 20 minutes!

Livestock guardian dog status: extremely unhappy about the thunder (he let himself in to a barn stall and hid in the straw! Poor guy)

A bunch of neat, turbulent, grey clouds and dark rain behind a field and some trees
A very nervous looking yellowish fluffy dog, with his paw up on my leg, looking mournfully at the camera, standing on a straw-covered barn floor.

@sundogplanets Those are stunning photos! Thank you for sharing. I miss the prairie skies sometimes.

@BasicAppleGuy I know it isn’t related to UI, but on a recent Talk Show episode Neil Jhaveri talked briefly about how the original notes app used an IMAP sync engine under the hood and that just astonishes me. https://overcast.fm/+B7NBzAmo0/22:00

It's not often that I have an anti-recommendation for a book, but I finished reading Nightfall by Asimov/Silverberg. I loved the premise for the story (so much cool orbital dynamics!) But the second half of the book was one of the most depressing, nightmarish things I've ever read. Do not recommend.

zyrxvo,
@zyrxvo@mas.to avatar

@sundogplanets I also recently read Nightfall for the first time, just last month. I feel conflicted about it too. The premise is fascinating, but there was much of the book that I struggled with (plot and writing). I found the second half disturbing.
