Started playing Starfield and it really made me want to revisit fallout 4, I’m now deep back into a new play through of Fo4 with 22 hours played in the last 2 weeks. Really enjoying it again.

Anyway, another settlement needs my help….

I’m going to fully assess what actual windows software I rely on any more and migrate all of my systems to a Linux based os this weekend I think.

The amount of games that I play that work on my Steam deck already confirms that I’ll be fine there.

I probably spin up a windows vm that I could remote into from my homelab if I’ve missed anything I do need to run.

In the not too distant future:

Today we’re announcing we’re ending support for Bandcamp and merging it to YouTube music….

I love the fact that both my ublock origin & pihole detect and block absolutely no trackers when I’m on kbin (I’m sure the lemmy users are just as fortunate).

Another shit Reddit moment, I’ve not missed it at all.

YouTube is axing its ad-free Premium Lite subscription plan - The Verge (www.theverge.com)

I was happily using this for a year or so now. Feels fairer than using an ad blocker. But now they apparently want more money out of people. Feels like some sort of internet video apocalypse is happening, where the services become extremely fragmented and expensive, like YouTube, netflix, hbo, Hulu, Disney+ and whatnot. Each...

I've posted it repeatedly but I'd like to add the (paid extension) Vinegar extension as a recommendation for iOS Safari.
Enable extension, add YT to home screen and stop seeing ads.
Combined with Banish for Safari - stopping the "open in app" popups on websites, my online experience is golden.

Got rid of my Xbox and PS5 as I was sick of having to pay out for subs (PSN/XBL) so I'll gladly take any of the PS5 games that Sony offer on PC, even if we have to wait a while.

Good to see the Sony exclusives still coming.

I loved Google play music as a locker for my owned music and a a storefront to buy what I wanted. YouTube Music made me abandon it completely and move my owned music onto my plex server.

Why does Google have to ruin everything? Still bitter about Google Reader closing back in the day. That was the beginning of the end of me having confidence in their services and moving to self hosting as much as I can.

I ended up recovering some of my music using Google takeout which in turn absolutely wrecked most of the tags on my songs.

We already pay for prime, all this will do is make me watch the shows I already pay for from my Unraid server.

We was all at lunch one day at work and one of the supervisors came in and asked someone to do something when we finished lunch.

This particular nasty shit told him this was our break and to piss off. No one particularly found that necessary.

Supervisor guy apologised for disturbing our break, explaining he’s sorry and that it was the anniversary of his wife’s passing and he wasn’t thinking straight. He wasn’t one to disturb us on break normally.

The arsehole then replied to the supervisor something along the lines of “we don’t bring our problems in work and neither should you, so fuck off”

When the supervisor left, we all let the guy know what an arsehole he was for doing that.

Possibly one of the worst people I’ve ever worked with. He eventually got fired for posting derogatory stuff on Facebook about the job/people he worked with and the supervisor we worked with had a lovely retirement send off when he hit his old age.

I’m so close to going pixel again but stuff like this really bothers me.

I’d hope that if they did exchange the watch, they’d at least refurb the broken one that was handed in.

BigVault,

To be honest, I’d prefer they did that.

Faster turnaround for the consumer and the old unit get put into the pool for the next refurb.

I much prefer written guides for anything that interests me over YouTube videos that are unnecessarily long. Plus the false attempts to get engagement (sometimes by making statements that are maliciously stupid) to appease the algorithm like:

What are your preferred ways to consume content? I prefer carrier pigeon, it’s easily the best. Let me know in the comments below if you have a preferred way, and don’t forget to like and subscribe.

Really annoying, like our sponsor….

Unity ...It Just Keeps Get Worse (youtu.be)

To say it’s been a bad week for Unity is the understatement of 2023. First they announced a terrible new Pricing scheme, then their customers revolted, as the week goes on though, it gets worse and worse for Unity, from threats from an employee shutting down their offices, to more studios threatening to leave, to scummy secret...

Aah, the good old Motorola Atrix.

One of the earliest Laptop/phone combo devices I remember releasing.

Still playing Starfield.

Game is immense in scale and I’ve been doing random quests and POI hunting and enjoying it thoroughly.

Waiting till October 14th like the European peasant I am, just like I did in 1999.

Starfield. Trying to stay away from some of the negativity online about it to not to make me aware of my own poor standards and am loving it so far.

I’m more invested in using the site as a user aggregated feed with other subjects in interest in thrown in the mix. Probably more like Reddit in that instance but with seemingly more well thought out human comments, less bots and less cringy “and my axe” style bullshit.

btop is just lovely.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I used to own both a Series X, PS5 and have my gaming PC (all in the same room - desktop currently has an i5 13500, RTX 3090 24GB, 4TB of NVME storage & 128GB ram)

Got myself a 5m hdmi lead capable of driving my 4k/120 TV and just ended up using my pc for everything now.

I just switch sources between my monitor and tv when I want to game on the couch. Any mouse/keyboard input needed, I do it on the Unified remote app on my phone and fire up Steam big picture on the tv.

Sold the PS5 and XBOX and ditched two more subscriptions hitting me every month.

No regrets so far.

The Fairphone 5 released, is the sleekest repairable phone yet (www.androidpolice.com)

Two years after the Fairphone 4 and following the release of some audio products like the Fairbuds XL, the Dutch company is back with a new repairable phone: the Fairphone 5. It looks and feels a lot like the Fairphone 4, but it adds choice upgrades across the board, making it the most modular and also most modern-looking...

I was pained to move to iOS when my kids decided they wanted iPhones and I needed one to manage their parental controls, but boy do I love the form factor of the 12 mini I got.

Everything out there seems so huge now.

I’d love to have more options for smaller, manageable phones, especially as my workplace have given out work iPhones now, I could realistically go back to Android again come upgrade time as I can manage their accounts with that.

Just got my first iPhone since the 3G, now what?

I’ve been using Google Pixels since they were Nexus phones and just activated my new 14 yesterday. It’s a little weird but I like it so far. I do miss twire instead of twitch, YouTube re-Vance’d, and Firefox with Adblock. What does a long term android user like me need to know/install/settings tweak/etc?

To get that ad-free YouTube experience, I use Vinegar safari extension and have pinned the YouTube site to my home screen rather than using any apps.

I also use Banish to remove all those annoying "Open in our app" pop-ups in Safari.

Lastly, I use AdGuard to block ads on the phone locally and have also set up my own Wireguard VPN server at home with PiHole so that I'm always protected ad-wise when I'm out and about over 5G and on any public Wifi (I used to use my own Wireguard VPN with my old Pixels too).

Absolute bliss.

BigVault,
BigVault avatar

No problems! 😀

When I was on Android I used to love the F-Droid open source repository. Both Newpipe (3rd party YouTube app) and DNS66 (local VPN on device that blocked ads throughout the phone).

I switched to iOS and really missed those applications and needed a solution for my new phone. Those 5 things above (Vinegar, Banish, AdGuard, WireGuard and PiHole) have worked wonders helping me when I switched.

Wouldn’t be without them now.

Edit:
If anyone happens be be on android or still uses Android devices with their Apple things, here are the apps I used to use:

https://f-droid.org/en/
https://f-droid.org/packages/org.jak_linux.dns66/
https://f-droid.org/packages/org.schabi.newpipe/

Both platforms with compelling solutions to block ads and nagging popups.🤝
