Do window shades help with heat significantly?

Hey, just got a 2014 Honda fit about a month ago and it’s getting hot. The windows have no tint on them and I was wondering how big the difference is between tinting the back windows and getting shades for the backseat. My state allows rear and back seat windows to be tinted, but I don’t have the money to do that now. I was...

Brkdncr,

Last time I got tint removed and replaced it wasn’t that expensive. Have you actually checked the cost? Because buying shades might be 2/3rds of the cost of tint.

Brkdncr,

Is that overspray on all your boxes and stuff? If so that means you were kicking up dust and this paint job isn’t going to look that good or last that long.

Colocating for the first time. What do I need to know?

Since Google is getting rid of my unlimited Gdrive and my home internet options are all capped at 20 megabits up, I have resorted to colocating my 125 terabyte Plex server currently sitting in my basement. Right now it is in a Fractal Define 7 XL, but I have order a Supermicro 826 2U chassis to swap everything over to....

Brkdncr,

You want to use as little space as possible tonsave on cost.

A server with ipmi is ideal.

A hardware vpn firewall is a good idea.

Do you need to provide your own router or switch?

/kbin project management costs, financing, future plans

I wrote the first line of code for /kbin on January 14, 2021. Around this time, I started working remotely and decided that the time I used to spend commuting to the office would be devoted to /kbin. Throughout this entire period, /kbin has been a hobby project that I developed in my free time. It was also when Lemmy started...

Brkdncr,

Do you have backups in place? What is your retention range? To you have copies offsite? In the event of a disaster, how long before you would have services redeployed and restored?

Brkdncr,

The early 90s had some cool concept cars. Another that looks close to this was the Dodge Daytona concept, but I think that project got rolled into the Stealth.

They also were playing around with turbocharging the Mitsubishi 3.0 in a smaller package that would fit in the FWD vehicles like the spirit,Daytona, caravan but nothing came of it other than the engines popping up on forums every once in a while.

@Adam_Cadmon1 i recently did self checkout and inadvertently 'stole' 10 or so items because their machine was beeping but not actually tracking the items. If i'm doing their job, is that employee theft?

    Help repairing crumbling steps (lemmy.world)

I’m not sure what material or style these steps are, but they’ve started crumbling after water got into a crack and froze during the winter. It seems to be getting worse and I’m wondering how to address it. Is this something that can be patched or do I need to remove all this material and start over?

    Brkdncr,

those steps were going to break at some point.

You can't simply mix up some cement and fix it. Cement doesn't glue to it'self after it's set up. You'll need a special mixture to get anything to stick to it reasonably well.

Plan on getting the steps redone, and patch it with some repair mix for the short term.

    Brkdncr,

Preface to state that blackberry 10 and Microsoft Windows phones were much better than iOS and Android for almost everything except getting devs to build apps on their platforms.

I like the idea of Android. I want there to be an open ecosystem and different types of devices that can look similar or look different.

It’s a real pain in the ass to manage Android. There was admin mode, now there’s enterprise mode. Also there’s Knox, with various options and licensing that overlap with your mdm. Oh and gmail enterprise is the email app but you need to include chrome, unless you’re using Knox but oh yeah never mind that was deprecated you’ll be using gmail. Also the dual-profile thing isn’t very seamless. Also depending on the phone vendor, model, and OS version the UI will be different. Good luck teaching anyone the changes or talking them through screens.

It’s so bad that Microsoft developed Outlook for Android and app-level management to largely ignore the nonsense that was managing android devices.

Over on iOS, the UI has largely remained the same since release. MDM isn’t great but it’s gotten better. It’s a breeze to manage compared to iOS. Apps are pretty consistent in design.

Windows phones never really got around to MDM, but blackberry phones were always easy to manage.

IOS is simple better for enterprise and most non-technical users that need a smartphone and have no interest in customizing it.

    Brkdncr,

Always get whichever is available at your local hardware store.

    For battery it’s makita.

For corded it’s harbor freight for little used items or whatever is available from Home Depot, usually ryobi.

Is there any more ethical solution to our current circumstances than "murder all billionaires"?

Not that I'm particularly against that - quite the opposite, in fact. But I'm wondering if anyone sees, or had seen a path to social and climate recovery/progress that could occur without first eradicating the class of people who most enjoy the present status quo.

    Brkdncr,

Why do these have to happen serially? “Fix corruption” could take decades and honestly will probably never be fixed. “Tax the mega-rich” takes less than 4 years.

    Brkdncr,

A significant amount of trade skill knowledge and examples are tied up in YouTube. Does anyone remember building a deck before YT? You would go to the library, make copies of books or magazines that had a general idea on how to do it, then you would try to do it yourself and things would go wrong constantly.

There’s a lot of this type of stuff that would simply be lost. It’s not unusual to find videos from 15 years ago that are still relevant today.

    Brkdncr,

Suing lawyers over costs is very, very, common. It’s not even newsworthy.

Every song seems like a slice of magic. It’s both perfect and naturally in-exact.

    Brkdncr,

Most dj software can do this, and many are free or have a “lite” mode. Check out virtual dj, rekordbox, and their competitors.

    Brkdncr,

Not everyone that is technically adept agree with your statements.

    Brkdncr,

To start with, I don’t think privacy is that important. I think that most open source end-products aren’t good and they are only made better when money gets involved.

    Brkdncr,

It’s not like it doesn’t make sense though. It makes sense that a credit card works the way it does because real-time authorization isn’t always available, and because there is a lot of legacy/backwards compatibility going on. If you wanted to “fix” credit cards you would get rid of them completely and switch to an identity service that allowed you to “federate” your identity with a lender’s service.

It sounds great, but in practice getting all of the ancillary parts working with each other is tough. Look how long Apple Pay (one of the better implementations of a better credit card) has been around and there are still a lot of places that don’t accept it.

Thinking about privacy as a 1:1 exchange with a service is already thinking two steps behind. Services have been using your info to create targeted ads since the beginning of capitalism. It really stepped up their game when computers and databases got involved, and as the internet became more prolific it got even more precise.

We’re at a point where your info isn’t even being used to target you. It’s valuable on its own.

And that’s the trade. You trade something of value to a service so that you can use their service.

Privacy is not important because we lost control of it a long time ago. It will take an act of Congress (in the US) to make it better, and there’s so much money involved that no one wants to tackle it head on.

    Brkdncr,

Isn’t there a ton of empty lore to be filled? I’d be interested in a game that fills some of the background details like where the mega man tech came from, how robots became sentient, etc.

    Brkdncr,

Can you post a photo of where power is getting to the shed? It should be a breaker sub panel and it should have a “lockout” tab. You can simply throw the breakers and put a lock on the panel.

    Brkdncr,

Put a lock on the breaker panel.

What is a good situation to use a tankless water heater?

We’ve been exploring a thankless solution, but the company that quited us said it isn’t a good idea in our area because the ground freezes in the winter. We don’t live in a super cold area, but it does snow a few times a year and it can get into the single digits of degrees Fahrenheit.

    Brkdncr,

Why do you want tankless? If it’s not for space and “endless” hot water, then tankless may not be right for you.

Consider a heat pump tanked water heater if you’re looking for efficiency improvements.
