CIWS-30,

Wait until the population declines further and the CCP tightens its grip even more over Hong Kong. I doubt this'll last. It's just how authoritarian communist regimes work. Look at Putin and co. for examples.

In its first week, Immortals of Aveum had a peak count of just 751 players on Steam. (steamdb.info)

After 5 years in development and heavily pushing Unreal Engine 5 technologies, Immortals of Aveum was met with a whopping 751 player peak. For reference, Forspoken was considered a flop but still had over 12,000 players peak total. This may be the biggest flop of the year.

CIWS-30,

Not surprising, but disappointing. The premise was interesting (first person magic shooter) but the execution was tepid. The presentation / atmosphere, the generic graphics, the dopey dialogue, the lack of an interesting story. A lot of the success of games like Halo is how the world sucks you in with its atmosphere and storyline, I think developers really underestimate how much that matters in a single player game. Cinematogrophy is important, the feel of an experience is more than the simple gameplay of moving a character around and pushing buttons.

CIWS-30,

Jesus has always been fairly liberal and borderline to actually socialist. He literally said rich people are more likely to go to hell because they cause problems for the poor by not helping them, and told someone rich that it's not good enough to be a nice person, but to actually follow him, that he had to donate to charity.

He also hated and actively fought with organized religion, and especially profit-driven organized religion. People say stuff like "What would Jesus do." but he made himself a whip and used it to chase people out of a synagogue and flipped tables because they were trying to profit off of religion like they were an extortionate business.

Hell, even the messianic prophets like Isaiah are very socialist. I would honestly say that parties like one of the Christian Socialist parties would better fit his stated ideologies than any conservative party. People have the wrong view about Jesus because Republicans and similar parties misrepresenting him, but he HATED people like the Republicans and Mega-churches.

Jesus was all like, "Love you enemies and be kind to those who use you." but then turned around and said stuff like, "You brood of vipers, you are sons of your father the devil, and how can you be saved from the fires of hell?!" to the leaders of the church at the time. Which shows you how much he hated and was angry at them, that he didn't even try to reconcile with them, which is why they assassinated him later.

Note than I'm not Christian (anymore) but I spent a long time as one and I learned a lot, and the biggest think I learned is that Republicans are not only not Christian, they actively misrepresent Christ and everything Christianity is about.

CIWS-30,

Well, this death'll cause chaos that's not good for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Hopefully it'll mess things up long enough for Ukraine to gain more of an advantage.

CIWS-30,

I agree, but he's unfortunately better than the alternative. I would have hoped that a guy whose nickname was "Amtrack Joe" would've done better. I'm guessing he was worried about the midterms or the 2024 election, given that everything that makes peoples' lives harder somehow gets unfairly blamed on him.

It just goes to show that Democrats are just a more sane conservative party with more tolerant social policies, they're not actually all that pro worker. The Europeans are right about this.

CIWS-30,

I doubt the title of this article very much. Ukraine is getting F-16's and probably JAS-39 Gripens very soon. Offensives and counteroffensives have to be slow and methodical by nature against entrenched forces, otherwise you'll take massive losses for very little gains.

Ukraine is on its way to gaining air superiority, and more vehicles and air defense is coming into their forces every month, and the longer this conflict lasts, the more likely it is that they'll gain more advantages over Russia as the sanctions keep draining them.

The lack of air superiority is hampering what Ukraine can do, and once that issue's settled, I think we'll start seeing more steady progress. Plus in the wide world, Japans and South Korea are settling their differences over WW2 and will probably keep cooperating, and part of that will be to send more stuff to Ukraine in order to help win there so they don't have to fight WW3 with China over Taiwan.

It's not just the West that supports Ukraine, it's also the Democratic parts of Asia.

CIWS-30,

Kind of, but more "slightly amusing" than funny.

CIWS-30,

Tim Walz was right. Isn't this the real pro-life and pro-child position to have? Some Republicans used to think like this. Waay back in the day when I was a naive young moderate Republican, even I thought that this stuff should be common sense.

Bible said that rich people who ignore the poor might go to hell, so I even thought it was the Christian thing to do and what Jesus would want. You know, the Jesus that the GOP's always going on about? Hell, when a bunch of people followed him and got tired and hungry, he fed them all for free. He wasn't all like "Hey guys, you should have planned better than this, use your own wallets and have some personal responsibility."

I also believed in taxing the rich to house the homeless, even if the housing was just barely acceptable. I also thought that all poor children should be taken care of with government money because if you force babies to be born (I was pro-life) it's YOUR responsibility and you have to take care of them now.

Needless to say, I didn't stay a Republican very long. I realized really quick what they were really all about. Cognitive dissonance, bait and switch, and total hypocrisy.

CIWS-30,

The Galaxy S5 was water resistant and had a headphone jack and microSD card too. It set a new standard that unfortunately no one followed up on.

To this day I wish they'd open-source that design so at the very least, small hobbyists and open source fanatics could try making updates to that design using the same basic frame. I think there's a large portion of the population that wouldn't mind having some variation of the Galaxy S5 forever as long as the internals and camera were upgraded every so often.

CIWS-30,

Very true. I also find that that group B also includes many people who think violence in general is fine. Physical violence, social violence, even sexual violence. Abuse messes people up.

What is Reddit CEO Steve Huffman doing? (www.theverge.com)

One of the weirder phenomena of the low interest rate era in tech was a tendency to see companies primarily as investments. The goal was not to have a functional business, but an exit, often via IPO or acquisition. I have begun to wonder if that explains what Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has been up to lately....

CIWS-30,

Given how much of a douche he's being (and only because he has organizational power, and not because he has people skills) in the event of a disaster, he'd probably be one of the ones to bite it first, or to be sent on an mission for expendables, to be honest.

When you can't just wave around money or org chart power to solve your problems, then people will start showing how they really feel about you. The way he's running Reddit into the ground shows that he's not a good leader, and the way he's pissing everyone off right now by following in the footsteps of a huge failure (Musk) who's also a jerk is just proving that he's an idiot AND a douche that wouldn't do well if society went awry.

CIWS-30,

Sounds about right. When I joined the military I met people from Alabama, and even people from other Southern states had nasty things to say about that state. I didn't believe it at first, but then I saw enough over time to realize, "I hate to say it, but maybe they're right. At least about some of the smaller towns and more rural areas."

I met a few nice people from Alabama, yes. I also met... a surprising number of not so nice types. I'm Asian by the way, not White. I'll let people fill in the gaps.

CIWS-30,

Well he's not wrong. Especially the Red States....

Like others have said, this is kind of a broken clock is right twice a day kind of situation. Similar to when he said that prescription drug prices are too high.

Edit: The irony being that almost every time he had a "broken clock" moment, Biden was the one who acted on and fixed the issue he was right about. Infrastructure, pharmacy prices, even border security. Joe Biden actually did what Trump constantly promised and never delivered on.

Victims of “Donbas genocide” were paid actors, Prigozhin’s fired trolls reveal (euromaidanpress.com)

In the aftermath of Prigozhin's media empire collapse, former employees spoke out about the dark tactics employed, including hiring individuals to portray "victims of Ukrainian Armed Forces” in staged reports that underpinned Russia's fake pretext for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine -- its Big Lie about alleged "genocide in...

CIWS-30,

Same strategy as Hitler, staged actors faking an attack as a reason to "counterattack". Not surprising. Russians are the real Nazis.

CIWS-30,

2016, I agree. He was cheated and could've beaten Trump.

2020? Not so sure. Even Bernie himself admitted that Joe Biden's pro working class policies and bottom up, middle out economic plan was very similar to his. He even said that his campaign team was so glad that Joe Biden didn't run in 2016. Bernie himself stated that Joe Biden was so sincerely for the average working American, that even though Biden was basically "Bernie Lite", he wasn't sure he could win against Joe.

If we look at what Joe Biden's been doing for this country, including passing the infrastructure bills, limited gun restrictions, and the Inflation reduction act, we see that he is kind of "Bernie Lite" and honestly, it's SO much better than Trump, that I'll take it.

CIWS-30,

If you're joining the Fediverse to take Reddit down and migrate people over... then it makes sense to talk about it. Have to strategize to identify your enemy's weaknesses it order to take 'em down. And while you're doing it, negative things about Reddit will come out. Even if it does end up being complaining, it's part of the process and it'll make people feel better while also doubling as important brainstorming.

CIWS-30,

Yo, people change! At first I was like, "Pssh, unions suck, they don't ever want me in them anyway." But then later on they were like, "I like you, you're cool. Why don't you join our union club? All the cool people are doing it." and then I was like, "Peer pressure? Naw, I HAVE to give in to it."

So I joined the union.

CIWS-30,

Sad news, but industry insiders have said that even bad, botched games like this one can teach you important lessons that help you make really good games later on. I wish the developers the best, and hope that they won't let this set them back.

CIWS-30,

Rather than doing this, they should work on the reasons WHY people are using adblockers. Some totally unrelated to ads, like those huge end-cards that block the video that you're still trying to watch. I use adblockers to remove those.

You used to be able to turn their predecessors off, but the new ones? I haven't found a way to turn them off without using ad-blockers. Even with Youtube Premium (which gets rid of the ads) I STILL have ot use U-block origin to get rid of those damned end-cards.

CIWS-30,

It's slow, but I'd argue that the quality is better. So that kind of makes up for it a bit, imo. And being slow means more people can just browse everything Federated on the front page (of K-bin at least) and get into new stuff they wouldn't have considered before.

CIWS-30,

Yep. I used to think that I didn't need to download and back up stuff because "I just need to pop on over to Youtube or something and it'll be there!" only to find out the hard way that people delist and take down stuff from places all the time, including major corporations.

I wish I'd downloaded and backed up some of my favorite stuff back in the day. Whether it's videos, music, games... it's surprising how much crap gets taken down. I never thought that people who insisted on having physical copies were weird (unlike some others) but now I realize even more nowadays that they were right. Especially if they use those physical copies to make their own digital backups.

CIWS-30,

Immigrants help out in the short term, but then they and their children realize the same thing that people who already live here do: that wages are too low, and that rent and cost of living is too high to support children.

Plus, corporations can use those immigrants to bust unions and keep wages down and rent prices up. Supply and demand, because we live in an oligrarchic dystopia that doesn't have enough social safety nets to make sure that new workers coming in don't sabotage the ones currently working.

I'm the children of immigrants and hang around with the children of other immigrants, and we're not having children ourselves, or ware waiting until increasingly later ages (minimum 30) because of how expensive it is to live, even without children. It only takes 1 generation to realize that new immigrants will just get stuck in the same rut that non-immigrants are already in.

Adding more people just increases the power of corporations (the real government) to treat workers as disposable objects. It's probably why corporate run governments don't try to stabilize unstable regions, but rather prefer to exploit them until there's a mass migration. More people to use for dangerous labor = more expendables that no one can afford to care about.

CIWS-30,

Thanks for sharing it. I somehow made it all the way to an end, and the insights in this article are ingenious, and so very true. It's also eerie how these companies' behavior is so similar to a manipulative, narcissistic, controlling sociopath that tricks people into abusive, co-dependent relationships that become very difficult to leave.

I think it's because the people in charge of them are also narcissistic sociopaths, and that personality affects the company's culture and works its way down into the product.

I really wish the Sherman anti-trust act were enforced more frequently and harshly nowadays, and the companies weren't allowed to buy their competitors and become megacorps. I'm glad things like the Fediverse exist to help fight back, because we're probably already about halfway to becoming a Cyberpunk dystopia. We're just missing the Cyber, honestly.

CIWS-30,

Not actually 13, that was only allowable if the other party is 17 or under.

from the article:

Previously, Japan had one of the lowest age of consent among developed nations. However, a person who has had sex with a minor aged 13 to 15 will be punished only if the person is five or more years older than the minor.
