With navies, I just started to spam out the most modern screening ships I could with a mix of torpedoes and light attack. Then give them air support when you're able.

Is it the best navy composition? Almost certainly not. But when I screw up and send some of my fleet to the chopping block, it hurts less since the screens are replaceable.

If you're interested in some of the set pieces, like the bitters on the right side of the board or the factory on the left side of the board, those are from an actual game, Factorio. If it even kind of looks like you might enjoy it, then I'm sorry. I've ruined your life temporarily.

The Purple Guy from FNAF appears on B8, and the souls of 5 children randomly infect 5 pieces currently on the board. They want to kill Purple Guy.

Standing up for your values might be decided to be a pathology - If you're autistic (neuroclastic.com)

This article picks apart a bunch of biases by the researchers of a given paper. The object of study was the differences in behavior between a group of autistic people and a group of non-autistic people when choosing between prioritizing value for oneself or value for the community....

I feel the same and am on the spectrum myself. I feel that if I don't say anything when something immoral is said, by not acknowledging it as immoral I'm tacitly supporting it. After all, if it bothered me, why didn't I say anything?

Of course, there's some nuance to when and how to have an argument. But I feel there's a much larger desire to keep the peace among my other family members. Even though some of those family members are really shitty people.

"Atheists are so mean!" (lemmy.one)

A common trope I see in atheist circles are people (often claiming to be atheists themselves, and I’m sure many genuinely are) going around chiding other atheists for being mean, rude, or otherwise disrespectful to believers. It’s counterproductive! It doesn’t work! It paints us in a bad light!...

A terrifying and interesting story that I first heard of from the Podcast "Last Podcast on the Left", specifically episode 511 The Biggest Ahole of the 20th century. While they do a bit of a deeper dive, the linked wikipedia article goes into a lot of detail as well.

It's really crazy to hear of Kehoe's motivations. It seems he had a large ego, thought highly of himself (he wore a goddamn suit while farming), and had a strong and warped idea of right and wrong. He was also intelligent, and was very successful in planning this horrible massacre. He improvised a shrapnel bomb by loading the back of his truck with explosives and scrap, for example. I really can't believe I hadn't heard of this sooner.

Anyone else dealing with a lot of climate anxiety right now?

@eniko Yeah I think so. I also just hate summer in general, and it's of course really awful hot out right now. Which is exacerbated by climate change.

It looks like the data comes from Statista. After a quick google, they look to be credible. Though, they require a business solutions license to see the source, which is a cool $490.

In other words, looks legit imho.

Hold your Wee for a Wii contest. A mom trying to win a popular gaming console for her kid is killed participating in a radio-show contest. (en.wikipedia.org)

On January 12, 2007, KDND's morning show, the Morning Rave, held an on-air contest entitled Hold Your Wee for a Wii, in which contestants were asked to drink as much water as they could without urinating... A 28-year-old contestant, Jennifer Strange, died of water intoxication hours after taking part in the contest....

In the linked article, they say that this is distinct from erotic asphyxiation:

Reasons for practice are distinct from erotic asphyxiation. Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners in London,[4] claims that the fainting game is pursued primarily by children and teens "to get a high without taking drugs." Children "aren't playing this game for sexual gratification." It is frequently confused with erotic asphyxiation, which is oxygen deprivation for sexual arousal. Unlike erotic asphyxiation, practice of the fainting game appears to be uncommon in adulthood.[5]

"Block The Rich" is like an ad-blocker, but for obscenely wealthy people with overinflated egos. (lemm.ee)

About 8 months ago I got pretty tired of seeing billionaire spam online. I could not bear to read about yet another rich guy who launched themselves (or their $200,000 car) into outer space 🚀 . I did not care about their expert opinion on the latest meme coin back then. I do not care about their expert opinion on the dangers...

I like the idea behind this extension and would love to use it. However, I would really appreciate the ability to tweak the blocklist. Not that I enjoy seeing or hearing about Trump everyday, but I do want to stay in the loop with the ongoing court cases he's getting rammed with. If I never hear or see Elon, Zuck, etc. again then I'd be happy.

Sick of hearing about record heat? Scientists say those numbers paint the story of a warming world: With a summer of extreme weather records dominating the news, meteorologists and scientists say records like these give a glimpse of the big picture: a warming planet caused by climate change. https://phys.org/news/2023-07-sick-scientists-story-world.html

@Mane25 Sure, here's the Annual global land-ocean temperature index. And the Annual Ocean heat average tempatures. Really, just go to town. Any Annual averaged data category gives some cause for alarm. Sea levels, CO2 levels, Methane levels, etc.

The climate records that are being broken regionally are a direct consequence of the trends shown above. If you read the article @readbeanicecream was kind enough to share, then you would have read that. "Records go back to the late 19th century, and we can see that there has been a decade-on-decade increase in temperatures," said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, keeper of the agency's climate records."

So no, I don't think this is sensationalist or misleading at all. You just need to dig past the headline a little bit. A headline that accurately reflects what scientists are saying is a direct consequence of the general trend that's going to continue to get worse and break more records into the future.

Here's a quick article from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Essentially:

"Sometimes, the scorching heat is ensnared in what is called a heat dome. This happens when strong, high-pressure atmospheric conditions combine with influences from La Niña, creating vast areas of sweltering heat that gets trapped under the high-pressure dome..." "...the main cause was a strong change (or gradient) in ocean temperatures from west to east in the tropical Pacific Ocean during the preceding winter."

Sponsorblock for Podcasts

As someone who aggressively adblocks everything, one of the final places that ads can still reach me is in annoying ad reads within podcasts. Youtube sponsorblock is incredible but it seems no one has yet adapted this for podcasts. Has anyone else managed to find a solution here? As far as i can tell in my googleing, this...

That's good to hear! I'm not on iOS but I'll keep an eye out for the Android solution.

Thankfully, in the Pikmin 4 demo you can skip all cutscenes which include cutscene tutorials. The tutorial section is still pretty long, but skipping the cutscenes makes it much more bearable.

Never played pikmin 3, but I had a funny experience with the day limit in pikmin 1. You have way more than enough time to complete the game in the day limit, even if you play very suboptimally.

Despite that, in my initial playthrough I still hated it for all the reasons you listed. Theoretically, I could see how a day-limit could be good for the game. Adding tension and the like. But on that first playthrough when I had no idea how much time is worth, I always felt the need to rush. As it turned out, I could have easily taken a few days to just explore or strategize. But there's no way to know that at the start. Maybe it could work better if the game could communicate somehow if you're ahead of schedule or something.
