Ignacio

@Ignacio@kbin.social

Spanish guy, who likes open source software and has just discovered the fediverse (as of 28th of April, 2022). I like video games, and indie and retro music. I’m a student. I’m officially diagnosed with ADHD and ASD since January, 2023.

America is a continent and Americans are people from that continent (Canadians, Usonians, Mexicans, Cubans, Argentinians, Brazilians...)

There’s so much hostility

Same here, to be honest. Except for Beehaw, every other place seems like a no-mod/no-remember-the-human land.

And some governments, like Germany and The Netherlands.

Settling disputes between you and Discord

Informal resolution. Most disputes can be resolved informally, so if you have an issue with the services, you agree to reach out to us before initiating a lawsuit or arbitration. This requires emailing disputes@discordapp.com written notice (‘Written Notice’), which must include: (1) your name; (2) the email address or phone number associated with your Discord account; (3) a detailed description of the issue, and (4) how you’d like to resolve it. If the dispute is not resolved within sixty (60) days after receipt of the Written Notice, you and Discord agree to resolve any remaining dispute through further informal discussions or one of the formal dispute resolution provisions below. You must engage in this informal resolution process before starting any formal dispute resolution unless exempted by law. Applicable statutes of limitations and due dates for arbitration filing fees or other deadlines will be tolled upon receipt of the Written Notice to disputes@discordapp.com, while the parties attempt informal resolution.

If you reside in the European Union, you may also be entitled to submit your complaint to the European Commission’s Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) Platform or the Out-of-Court Dispute Settlement (‘OCDS’) mechanism under DSA Article 21. ODR allows EU consumers to resolve disputes related to the online purchases of goods and services without going to court. Note that a submission to the ODR or via the OCDS mechanism alone, without submitting a Written Notice to disputes@discordapp.com, will not toll the applicable statutes of limitations or other deadlines.

Governing law and jurisdiction. The Federal Arbitration Act, federal arbitration law, and California law will apply to these terms and any disputes related to these terms or our services, regardless of conflict of laws rules. Any dispute that is not subject to arbitration will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts in San Francisco County, California, and you and Discord both consent to venue and personal jurisdiction in these courts.

If you are a consumer who resides in the European Union, this clause and these conditions generally do not affect any mandatory consumer rights you may have under your local law, and all disputes arising in connection with the services or these conditions shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the court of Amsterdam (The Netherlands) or, if you are a consumer, to the closest court to your home if you are in a state member of the Europan Union.

THIS. Now, next time anyone posts something, think a little bit more about the rest of the world, because we exist too. US is not the only place here.

Ignacio,

It would be wise to put in the post title whether a piece of news applies worldwide or US-wide, because some of us aren't good guessers.

Block communities spamming gaza / war / techbro

I would agree with you if those communities were/are created to post content about gaza / war / techbro. But in most cases, those communities are generic, about news and technology, so when you block them, you also block other content that is not about gaza / war / techbro.

Indeed. In my opinion, it's called lemmy.world but it's too US centric to have the .world domain.

It looks like you shared an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of concerns over privacy and the Open Web.

Maybe check out the canonical page instead: https://edition.cnn.com/2023/10/26/opinions/oxi-day-the-true-story-of-how-greece-helped-defeat-the-nazis-cosmos/index.html

I'm definitely not a bot.

It's your fault for installing Gentoo. Now she's configuring FLAGS and compiling LLVM 24 hours per day. And let's not talk about kernel...

Need a politics-free safe space? It’s called “going for a walk”

Unfortunately, walks don't last forever. Another option is to delete your lemmy/kbin account, because everything in these places is politics or related to politics or turned into politics.

Ignacio,
Ignacio avatar

Tankies are LGTB-phobic? Why am I not surprised?

Ignacio,

I'm not talking about them performing a coup. Although I don't like coups, they're property of nobody but themselves, and eventually democracy will return.

But French troops doing bad stuff, or doing neither bad nor good stuff (that's doing nothing at all), that doesn't mean they should be replaced by another foreign nation troops, being either private or not. If we agree that African nations are sovereign enough to decide their own future, they're also sovereign enough to defend themselves, or to ask for help to neighbouring countries in exchange of nothing. But in the countries we're talking about, they asked for help to another potential colonial nation in exchange of natural resources, that could be manufactured in place, thus creating employment, wealth and other benefits.

If they're Ukrainians, why the interviewer says "Добрый день", in Russian (notice how the "e" is pronounced "je") instead of "Хороший день" or "Добрий ранок", in Ukrainian (notice how the "e" is pronounced "e")?

Ignacio,

What the hell is happening there? Fucking shit.

More like they're training mental gymnastics but exercises are really hard.

I very much dislike that strategy. These are the necessary steps for Ukraine to achieve peace:

  1. Stop attacking Crimean bridge.

  2. Let Russia repair that bridge.

  3. Invite Putin to ride his car on that bridge, so he will be pleased by the successful repair.

  4. Burn that bridge to the ground once Putin is on it.

  5. Profit.

Kremlin spokesman says Putin will be re-elected in 2024 with over 90 percent of the vote, later clarifies this as his personal opinion (meduza.io)

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted by The New York Times as saying “our presidential election is not really democracy, it is costly bureaucracy. Mr. Putin will be re-elected next year with more than 90 percent of the vote.”

Be wary of spiteful Reddit users

In the past week and a half, I've noticed Reddit behaviors starting to try and poison all of the places that people are taking refuge in to get away from the toxicity, myself included. They've started to DDoS Lemmy for a while, which is a Reddit thing to do and what they're notorious of doing whenever they feel they don't like...

Ignacio,
Ignacio avatar

Kbin and Lemmy are better built than Reddit in several ways to handle those behaviours to a certain point:

  • Karma: it's hidden on Kbin, and I can't find it on Lemmy. So, there is no pressure to post or comment something. Do you know that feeling on Reddit when you have 500 karma, you write a comment, and later you have 480 karma? That's what I'm talking about.

  • Instances with their own rules: every instance has its own administrator(s), and they can set different rules for them and apply them. Some are more tolerant than others, so in the end, your experience depends on what instance your account is. Besides, some instances don't have downvotes, so that's a big plus too.

  • People: we all, or the most of us, know how situation was on Reddit, how we struggled to make our experience be positive, with no success. Because we know that, we don't want that situation to replicate on these places. It's difficult sometimes, but we do what we can.

  • Defederation: as someone said here, if situation inside an instance is too hard to tackle, to the point that those bad entities harass users on other instances, then defederation is key, until the situation comes back to normal.

And there are other things, like algorithm (or lack of), code open sourced to fork if you wish, etc.

Can anyone explain to me why being vegan is the new cool, while being vegetarian is equal to eating meat without eating meat? Like, when I'm looking for vegetarian recipes, I only see vegan recipes, no vegetarian ones anywhere.

Ignacio,
Ignacio avatar

OK, so... when will he recreate Hitler's fate?

This feels like a forced reddit detox.

I, much like basically everyone here, have been avoiding Reddit when possible, and the content here just doesn't hit the same. My fried dopamine receptors were certainly screaming for stimulation early on but now I feel an urge to touch grass and breathe fresh air. What is this? Am I dying? I still hate the angry lightbulb in...

Ignacio,
Ignacio avatar

Same thing over here. It seems that karma being absolutely irrelevant makes us more confident and more prone to participate in discussions and content. That, or maybe the lack of toxicity and vitriol.

Ignacio,
Ignacio avatar

Free speech absolutism, ladies and gentlemen.

There's obviously a strong leftist culture here

That depends on what instance you create an user on. For example, Lemmygrad.ml and Lemmy.ml are not the same thing, despite both belonging to Lemmy. The issues I see are having a tankie culture, and not having more points of view.

There are less users so less content

That's something we can help with, although it's not so easy. I mean, the users that are already here, we can create more content and interact more with each other, so eventually more users will come. It can be boring and tiring, but it's not impossible.

Federation is a stumbling block for many people

That's something absolutely new for the vast majority of people. I felt myself confused the first time I joined the fediverse too. But after some time, I felt myself less confused. Some clarifications, tutorials and support can do the real trick.

Ignacio,
Ignacio avatar

I don't like politics precisely because of polarization and extremists. My first experience in the fediverse wasn't good either. Russian invasion to Ukraine happened two months before, Elon Musk stated his intentions to buy Twitter, and I joined a random Mastodon instance. Guess what? Tankies supporting and defending Russia and anything related to communism.

Luckily, I discovered that there are a lot of more Mastodon and Lemmy servers, and I'm in those that I can call "home".

It's obvious that I don't want to see far-right or alt-right content while I can. But I don't want to see tankie or far-left content either. Like someone said in this post, discussing with a commie and disagreeing, even being in the left political spectrum, makes you a "fascist" or something similar.
