We probably don't agree.
I probably said something you didn't like.
You look lovely, by the way. New shirt?

I’ll note that 2.5°C of warming by 2100 is a significant improvement over the trajectory we were on a decade ago, even if still far from where we need to be

Almost 9 fucking months of summer here in Perth, with about 3 of those months being 30C and clear every single day. Forests and bushland are dying as a result, and water is scarce. I've never seen anything like it.

We have a shitload of Chinese cars on the roads here in Australia, and you see them pop up for sale only a few years after being bought brand new at extreme discounts for a reason; they're cheaply built pieces of shit that aren't reliable and lure buyers in with fancy aesthetics and tech. I drive a 2010 Japanese import Toyota Crown, and it'll outlast any of these Chinese made cars.

China is trying to get a foothold in the west, and they're using cheap vehicles as part of that strategy during a cost of living crisis. It's a smart strategy, admittedly, because the downsides won't be apparent to the average person for a long time. The US really should be helping reduce the price tag on domestically produced cars if they want to stem the flow of Chinese EV's hitting the roads, but the government and automakers seem to be averse to that. People without money are going to pick what they can afford, for better or for worse...

Too little too late. I was legitimately looking to buy Helldivers 2 a couple weeks ago, but ended up getting hooked on The Talos Principle 2 instead. Now I just straight up don't trust Sony not to pull their usual bullshit again in the future, so they'll not be getting my money (and I doubt I'm the only one who has been completely turned off buying the game as a result of this.)

I don't get the obsession with 'smart' devices given all they seem to do is overcomplicate simple designs that have worked just fine for decades - in addition to opening them up to abuse or corporate surveillance. The smartest device I own is my Pixel 8, and I barely even use it unless I need to make a call or message someone. I won't even buy a post-2014 car purely because they just contain too much tech I'll never use and don't want (not to mention the privacy concerns with cellular data transmission and telemetry.)

It fucking astounds me as an Australian that Americans can just... buy shit like this. Anything fun gets immediately banned here.

What celebrity has actually been a positive influence in your life?

Mine right now off the top of my head is Adam Savage, former co-host of Mythbusters years ago. I sometimes watch his Tested videos whenever he answers questions and he answers them very thoughtfully. A lot of his thoughts, takes and answers based on his experiences and point of view on life and career has helped me be more...

He's been flying helicopters for like 80 years.

I regularly emulate Switch games on my RoG Ally Z1E, and it pulls it off so fucking well, I haven't touched my Switch since I got the thing (it easily runs every title I've thrown at it at 60fps+higher res, plus I have the ability to mod games if I need to.)

I can't imagine it'll be too difficult for them to emulate Switch 2 games, assuming Nintendo don't catch on to emulation developers too early.

I swear you can actually spot entire chains of comments consisting of only bots replying to other bots on every single submission that makes it to the front page. It's baffling how fast and hard reddit has fallen.

Hey sorry for the late reply, I was just waiting for the perfect example, and I found one: https://kbin.social/m/reddit@lemmy.world/t/995008/Reddit-if-full-of-bots-thread-reposted-exactly-the-same

Here in Australia, there aren't any bullshit field sobriety tests - the breathalyzer just comes out and you get tested. If you blow over, you then wait 15 minutes if you produce a lower reading, before trying again. If you still blow over, you then go to the station to get a proper test done before the police can legally prove anything.

There are obviously freedom-based downsides to mandatory roadside testing, but if the alternative is the kind of shit in this story, then I'm happy with our system here. Never had an issue with it myself... unless we're talking roadside drug testing, which is flawed as fuck, and most of the time produces a positive result the day after, leading to a loss of license. We literally have 'road safety' billboards along our highways plastered with the tagline "get caught long after the high is gone."

Australia is so fucking behind the times in so many ways, it drives me insane.

It's sad to see the number of comments here that still seem to be stuck in the misguided 80's/90's/00's mindset of 'nuclear power in real life is just as depicted in The Simpsons.'

Happy I stuck with my older Samsung dumb TV. Great screen, decent size, flat enough to mount on a wall, and does everything I need it to do regarding hooking up my little i5/8GB baby office PC turned media hub. I don't care that it's only 1080p, looks just fine when I'm in bed and watching movies on it. Even when smart devices were first becoming THE thing to have, the idea of having to download updates for my TV got me thinking about the more nefarious aspects of such tech the future may hold.

I think a lot of it comes down to me just not being very materialistic, or needing my household devices to be internet ready with installed apps and no way of managing permissions or data harvesting. Even my cars are older, and were made well before integrated SIM cards and constant data collection, and I've no plans to upgrade any time soon. I guess I just never 'got' the appeal of having a smart device that wasn't just my phone (and even then, I barely use any apps on my phone outside a web browser (which eliminates the need for most apps anyway) and the camera.)

Has anyone else gravitated back to *facebook* a bit?

i can’t believe i’m saying this, but i’m finding myself enjoying facebook more. the UI and design feels vintage early 2010s, the choice of reactions is nice vs just liking or upvoting something, you can sort the replies by chronology / recent / best instead of being forced to read blue-check morons, there’s an incredible...

You couldn't pay me enough to go back to that cesspool. Three years free of it, and have only experienced positives. As another user also stated, I've got social media blocked on the DNS level, as well as no longer using reddit.

Kbin and Lemmy are pretty good, but I still limit my usage.

The very same AI that shows pictures of black people with dreadlocks when asked to show a typical viking also has a braindead response for a question involving Hitler and a guy who posts retarded tweets and regularly pisses off his shareholders? I am shocked.

AI is still so ridiculously tainted by bias and the relative infancy of the tech.

I have autism and ADHD, so no, I won't stop using it. I don't like the idea of a word having any real power, which restricting its usage does. There is no debate here for me, I am completely against that kind of thing.

I live in Australia, and I hate the lack of seasonal variation. Almost every day of the year is sunny with a varying temperature between 15C-45C, or overcast/humid. On the west coast, it rains a whole lot in winter. Visually there aren't a whole lot of environmental changes, and as an Aussie, the year is generally split into "too hot, less hot, cold, less cold, and repeat."

I get the appeal of seasonal stability to those in the northern hemisphere, but live here long enough, and you'll probably miss the way the passage of time seems to pass when each quarter of the year brings with it refreshing scenery and liveliness.

I've always wanted to live in a country that experiences and celebrates the changes of the seasons and all the visual beauty it brings, and truth be told, Aussie culture and pastimes don't appeal to me at all. I feel very alone here.

imo Tooie it's vastly inferior to the first game, and feels like it has no concrete identity as to what kind of game it wants to be. Banjo-Kazooie even to this day is a tight, defined, and perfectly balanced game that genuinely holds up, but I've never been able to get through Tooie without becoming either bored, frustrated, or both.

I get that Rare were trying to push the boundaries for video games at the time, but it just didn't translate to a better experience.
