I'm starting to get really tired of "should" posting, especially about . I saw a post recently saying that personal responsibility was pointless, and that we should try to end capitalism, we should take the fight to the governments, armies and companies who cause the most pollution, and we should start a revolution to save the planet.

I see lots of calls to action, but no action.

I'm just doing what I can as an ordinary person to reduce my impact on the environment. I know it isn't going to save the world, but at this point, what else can I do? Honestly, I;m not ready to go to jail, die, or kill in order to fight climate change, and I doubt most people are at that point either. Most of us are just trying to survive.

If you want to start the revolution, be my guest, but you shouldn't shame people for the little they can do, and you certainly shouldn't post expecting others to fight your battles for you. Be the change you want to see in the world, because if people's actions had the same passion and gumption behind them as their posts on , the world would be very different now.

Btw, this is me testing the limits of kbin's microblog feature, so the following post will be long. I will post a TLDR at the end.

It has been nearly a month since I've first joined . Even before the exodus, I was already growing tired of the site for the fact that despite how large the communities were, they were very cold and impersonal. There was also the fact that for the community at least, we had been siloed off from the rest of reddit, because nearly every topic involving issues were very often met with hostility by a good amount of users, often followed by a locked topic. It was even getting to the point where I didn't even feel safe in the some of the more socially liberal spaces.

The fact that mods were being stripped of some of the few tools they had to keep their communities hospitable, I knew the writing was on the wall. I tried many reddit alternatives during the blackout, including and . But once I figured out how , , and worked, I found myself feeling right at home on the fediverse.

I think the main reason why is because many of the people here are misfits from other platforms. Many of the users on mastodon are former twitter users who were driven off by the corporate culture of twitter, and later by Elon Musk and the poisoning of the platform. Others are former redditors like me who found platforms like lemmy, and are in the midst of trying to rebuild the community they once had on thier former platform.

Fediverse definitely doesn't feel "mainstream" like the sites that many of us come from , but perhaps that is part of the appeal, and why I have taken to it far quicker than any other social platform I have tried in the past. I'm just hoping as the fediverse continues to grow and attract new users, that it doesn't lose it's quirky and experimental spirit.

TLDR: I like fediverse. It's weird, quirky, and I feel more open here than I was ever able to be on reddit. Don't ever change.

I really enjoyed reading this. Thank you. It describes exactly the thought process that led me here. Have a good one!

Have you ever found a song you liked, listened to it continuously on repeat to the point it started to affect your sleep and ability to focus on anything else? Help...

dpkonofa,

This happened to me with Kodachrome by Paul Simon because of the repetitive chorus. I wouldn’t say I was a fan of the song but I heard it one day and then it just got stuck in there.

harpuajim,

No but this sounds unhealthy. You should see a professional.

I just noticed I get much more interaction posting to Mastodon via Kbin's microblog feature than I do from posting on Mastodon itself. A lot of the time on Mastodon I will feel like I am talking into the wind no matter how many hashtags I use, and yet if I post an untagged message from kbin, I'll get several more likes and replies.

I don't know how much of it is a fault with Mastodon, or maybe I'm simply doing something wrong, but it's been fascinating experimenting between the two sites.

a_mac_and_con avatar

@Roundcat I've noticed the same and think I know why it is. In Mastodon, you have to search through the hashtags. On Kbin, you just have to be subscribed to a magazine which automatically pulls in posts with the same hashtag. It's easier to see things that way, especially if you have notifications on for the magazine.

They are just two different sorts of systems. Mastodon doesn't automatically give you anything. You have to do the digging yourself.

Hey y'all, hear you hate Musk/Spez/Zuck/whoeverelseisthisweekstechboogieman, but if you really want to make him mad, sort by new and find some neat small communities to support, post, upvote and boost. I hear he hates it when you encourage growth on other platforms.

Tired of seeing the same stuff on lemmy's/kbin's front page? Want to encourage growth in smaller communities? Browse by new for a good time. Be sure to upvote and boost.

TiffyBelle,

Not sure if Kbin has the same filtering options as Lemmy, but the “Top Hour” etc. filters can be pretty useful to see top content on a sliding scale of time which will filter out the older stuff:

The algorithms that sort by “Hot” since the 0.18.x release of Lemmy seem to be doing a way better job of showing timely content now though; much better than earlier versions in my experience.

Here's what you don't seem to understand Mastodon. When I left Facebook all those years ago, I wanted a total separation. I wanted any data I could possibly obtain to be eradicated from their platform, I did not want to interact with anyone on their platform, and I did not want to be visible to that platform as much as I possibly could.

There are already privacy concerns on the greater fediverse, and to think that Meta won't take full advantage of those is incredibly naive, almost intentionally ignorant. Even if EEE wasn't a concern to you (and it should be,) The draw of your platform was the fact of rather than being influenced by a single corporation, fediverse was supposed to be a decentralized network of small communities who together could build each other up into a thriving network. By allowing Threads in, you are ultimately dooming yourself to become an orbit of meta.

In our highly capitalistic society, the goal is to either kill or eat the competition. You've essentially invited the wolf into the flock, and no amount of telling us how fluffy and cute they are is going to make me see past the teeth.

If Mastodon or Kbin federates with Meta, I leave. The whole point I came here was to escape the enshitification of the internet that tech giants bring. Meta was the first I left, and I would sooner go full ludite than be forced to engage with their data robbing platforms again.

Cruxifux,

For real. Meta can suck my cock.

Sometimes I like to browse by New, and give upvotes and boosts to posts in small communities.

Mastodon doesn't have to be the twitter replacement. Hell, I'd rather Masto have its own userbase and its own unique culture, and that people come here cause they actually want to use the platform, not settle for the next best thing for their bird site.

The problem with the internet is that it is far too centralized, which is what has led to this enshitification of platforms in the first place. Rather than mastodon become the next twitter, it would be better if several alternatives stepped up to replace it. Same goes for reddit, and whatever other site decides to shit the bed next.

NuclearNoggin,

totally agree, I look forward to a community with more substance behind the content.

rinaderp,

There's a few, even just within Twitter like microblogging:

Forks of mastodon: many, but notably glitch, hometown(?)

Pleroma (and it's popular fork, akkoma),

Misskey (and its popular fork, calckey),

there's a ton outside micro blogging too, not just Lemmy and kbin:

What game had a better OST than it had any right to?

The Flintstones and Waterworld for the SNES have some of the most tranquil OSTs on the SNES. There are songs that sound like they belong on DKC2 rather than these shovelware titles.

First post on kbin. Sorry if this ends up somewhere it shouldn't. Still figuring things out.

I don't think I'm ready to leave reddit completely, but I don't want to stay there. My compromise has been to bookmark niche subs that still don't have an active equivalent on fediverse or elsewhere. At the very least, I don't have to settle for the insufferable communities on reddit when better communities exist here. So long r/nintendo, r/pokemon.

I find myself doing far less doomscrolling on one site now, and more popping into different places on different sites like I used to pre social media hubs. I might visit my hometowns sub or r/ADHD on reddit, read about current events or gaming news here, and pop into tildes for pleasant conversation. All in all, if there is one positive thing the reddit enshitening has caused, its for the web to feel less centralized and a little more like 2008's internet.

and I can only hope this trend continues.

LSNLDN,

I’m reading this on beehaw lemmy on Memmy app so maybe not!

@LSNLDN Yeah, it federated fine, but it's a kbin post made to a kbin community, so I thought it worth mentioning that it doesn't appear on the default tab of that community when viewed from kbin
