Alyx came out 4 years ago, and is recognized as one of the best VR titles of all time. It's a full 15 hour game, so not a tech demo. I'd say that's a hit.

The CHIPS (etc) Act was enough to justify his presidency by itself, IMO. It was insane that such a huge percentage of the world's semiconductor research and production were concentrated in one country, especially a small one that China has been eyeing like a feral cat for years.

I know, right?

I chuckle with smug superiority as I hit "add comment" on one of my several Samsung devices

At 80+Gb that means it's a straight blu-ray rip without being recompressed at all, which is perfect if you have a nice home theater system. You definitely notice the difference then. But if you're just watching on an average monitor with headphones or such, then you're honestly better off finding a smaller version that someone properly compressed down a bit.

Still rocking my 2012 Silver genpu since I drove it new off the lot. Been the best balance of fun and reliability I've ever seen in a car. Just waiting for Mazda to get their shit together on their EV's and make an electric AWD 3 hatchback.

Drop has kinda gone to shit anyways. Though I have gotten some good headphones off them. But I ordered a set of wood IEM's back in January. Got and update like a month later that the supply chain got messed up, will ship in June. Current order status is "Reserved for shipment. Estimated ship date: July 10". So like a week ago. And all the emails from them lately have been

"Check out these amazing keycaps!11!1!"

"Hey look, we got more keycaps!!!!"

"Limited time only super-special keycaps!"

"Hey, you looking for some keycaps?!"

It's not what it used to be, just like everything else on the internet.

Are there any good Blu-ray ripping software for Linux?

I’m well aware that I can rip most Blu-rays with MakeMKV and then convert to mp4 with Handbrake; however, the former just rips everything raw from the disk so the file size is humongous and the conversion via Handbrake for just a single file is terribly long and puts a lot of strain on my computer....

acedelgado,
acedelgado avatar

MakeMKV (at least in windows) lets you rip a remuxed mkv without having to rip everything. So you can just select the titles, audio, and subtitle tracks you want without ripping all the other stuff. You don't need to make a full backup and then pull all that out.

Take care of your knives. Hand wash them, dry with a towel, and put them back in a block when you're done. They'll stay sharper for much longer that way, instead of letting them bang around in the dishwasher and then thrown into a drawer.

Also the Ninja Foodi is the best cooking device ever made, second only to the invention of pots and pans.

I've always loved anything Star Wars that didn't really involve Jedi. The universe is incredibly diverse and interesting, and cutting out the light side vs dark side trope most star wars content is centered on lets writers make really interesting characters and situations. Like in Mandandolrian the scene with Bill Burr confronting the Imperial officer that spearheaded the Burning Khan massacre was just fantastic, regardless of it being star wars.

Kbin seems to be pretty ambitious in that it's aiming at being a hub for (almost) all of the fediverse. So Lemmy's reddit-like forums, mastodon's quick posts a la Twitter, and peertube's youtube - style services - it's looking to bring all of those fediverse platforms so they're all accessible in one place rather than having to sign up for each. That way it's an easy place to go to for your decentralized social media content. So really it's just looking to make the fediverse more easily accessible and improve the user's experience.

It's a pretty big idea and it's pretty damn impressive what Ernest accomplished before this big fediverse boom. I'm excited to see where it goes.

30 Sci-Fi Movies That Are Over 90% On Rotten Tomatoes (www.msn.com)

While all forms of art require imagination, the genre of science-fiction is one in which it is especially crucial. Films in this category envision entire worlds of a bright (or dark) future or one inhabited by lifeforms of a greater intelligence — much like the filmmakers who created some of the following films that earned a...

Gotta say, I'm really excited for the work you're doing on Artemis. Kbin's mobile site is really good especially considering how young it is, but I miss the smoothness of a real app. Thank you for jumping in on it so quickly and enthusiastically!!

AMD GPUs to get Ray Tracing turned on for Mesa 23.2 (www.gamingonlinux.com)

Don't normally post on Reddit but figured I'd give it a go here. Excited to see ray tracing on the Steam Deck even if it's not great, as my desktop GPU is an aging rx580 thus incapable of RT. Would like to try RT Minecraft, or other older games with this feature....

Kbin is supposed to be able to communicate with mastodon and most other softwares on the fediverse, which is why it exists. Definitely needs some tweaking, though, there's like one dev right now.

Don't forget to buy Ernest a coffee so he can put some finances towards upgrading the server!

Yes, there are several gaming communities on the fediverse. This isn't a bad thing-if one instance goes down you'll still have others to go to. Since everyone can see and subscribe to different gaming communities/magazines they'll all show up in your feed, so it's not quite as fragmented that way. But if you want to browse through them you will have to visit each one individually.

It would be nice to be able to subscribe to a few communities and be able to make a group views of your subscriptions. So like if you could go into your subscriptions, add certain communities/magazines to a group catagory, and be able to use a drop-down on the homepage to view that subject as your feed.

Ilium and Olympos by Dan Simmons. Combines post-apocolyptic dystopian earth, Greek mythology, man-made AI robots that have left earth, and the Trojan War all together in one story, although complex. Bit of a fantasy vibe in there, but it's all tied together based in Sci-Fi. Masterpiece of writing, IMO. If you liked his Hyperion books you'll love this duology.

Armor by John Steakly. Pretty intense read about a soldier with advanced body armor in a very long, drawn out battle with an insectoid alien race.

Temporary Duty by Ric Locke. Aliens make peaceful contact with Earth, and the navy ends up sending two recruits as advance team aboard a merchant ship. Turns out even advanced alien races have stuff to learn from Earthlings. It gets to be a kind of a self-serving fantasy, but it's a pretty fun read. Sadly the author died before finishing the sequel.

Old Man's War by John Scalzi. In the future after mankind became an intergalactic civilization, for some unknown reason the military is exclusively recruiting seniors of retirement age to enlist in the military and start a new life off-world, to never return to earth.. No one knows exactly what that entails, but widower John Perry decides to enlist after he turns 75. He finds out firsthand why they are recruiting the aging population, and the terrible secrets that have been kept from everyone on Earth.

And of course The Expanse Series by James Cory. Well known nowadays with the successful show, just a realistic portrayal of how the future of humanity may pan out, with some alien influence along the way.

Difference between kbin and lemmy

Lately I often read about kbin.social being similar to lemmy but more accessible. So I created an account there to check it out. My experience so far is a little mixed. From kbin I can access all Lemmy posts, although I find the interface less intuitive to join new communities. So from the kbin side it feels like an other Lemmy...

Word is Lemmy and kbin are working to make the process more automated, so if you click a link to a community/magazine your instance want aware of it'll start aggregation without having to manually do the search. Downside of going with a free, open source, decentralized solution is there aren't a bunch of devs dedicated to updating the platforms for a living, so features will roll out slower.

acedelgado,
acedelgado avatar

Kbin is newer, so it has less traffic on its magazines than communities on Lemmy do, at least at the moment. Just like in Lemmy or other fediverse instances, to see kbin magazines someone has had to search for them on your Lemmy instance before they'll show up on your instance. So more people searching for Lemmy communities in your insurance rather than kbin's magazines means less will show up on your feed. That's what they have in common.

Kbin itself is a different software backend to access the fediverse. It supports viewing/subscibing/posting to Lemmy communities in other fediverse instances, but also has microblogging support (basically like random Twitter posts) that supports mastodon (fediverse Twitter). It also has a lot of customization options if you go into your kbin settings. Plus I read kbin doesn't rely on Javascript like Lemmy does, so that's a nice security bonus.

Kbin is much newer but I like the direction it's going. They do need to simplify link aggregation to make it a bit easier to view communities, but it's a work in progress that has a lot of potential.

/kbin - Just Reddit Things update

Hey, once again, I welcome the newcomers. It's great to see new faces here :) It seems that we've managed to resolve the server issue. Unfortunately, I had to temporarily disable certain features, such as content auto-refresh. It will be restored at the beginning of next week after the infrastructure change, so you'll get to...

@ratbastid

Sure, from what I understand-

Magazine = Basically a Subreddit, or called a Community on Lemmy

Article = a main post, like the one we're in. For some reason these are counted as "Threads" in the magazine's stats. Threads also seem to be the conversations within the article, like I posted, you replied to me, now I'm replying to you, that's a thread. If someone else responded directly to your post it's a different thread. That part's confusing, and I don't know why.

Microblog - basically like a Twitter post. It gets filed to your profile, but also gets tagged into the "random" magazine that we're in for filing's sake. It's just a quick post, and integrates better with Mastodon, the twitter alternative. You can follow people on Mastodon and vice versa (and also kbin of course) and you'll follow their microblogs and they'll see yours if they follow you.

Post - is a microblog within a certain magazine. So if you wanted to post something related to the subject of the magazine but don't necessarily want a long discussion thread, or want any Mastodon people you follow to be able to read it on their fediverse twitter, you can just do a post while you're browsing a magazine. That way your Mastodon friends will see it and kbin folks will know it's a discussion geared towards a particular magazine.

So like you can see on the top bar (on desktop at least) that there's currently 800 threads, which are articles, in this /m/random magazine. There are over 320,000 Microblogs (aka "posts") filed here since it's the default if you just post something that doesn't pertain to any magazine.

I hope that makes sense. The terminology is one of the weaker points of kbin right now, IMO.

Logan. Such a great movie in general, even if you'd never heard of Wolverine. Great sendoff for Huge Jackedman's portrayal of Wolverine too... Well, except that he's coming back now. Although it's for Deadpool, which is another favorite of mine, so I'll forgive it.
