phario,

Vaseline is just a petrolatum jelly and a lot of creams and moisturisers have this as a component. The problem with Vaseline is that it’s basically pure petrolatum and so blocks the skin completely.

You rarely want to block the skin completely. The uses some other people noted, like stopping bleeding, is one of those uses.

The truth is that I rarely recommend Vaseline because of how limited it is on skin use.

I recommend people look into Aquaphor by Eucerin, which is only about 40% petrolatum and moisturises a bit better. I always travel with a very small container (just a tiny bit) of the stuff. It’s useful if you have any skin conditions (flaked skin, rashes, etc) that you might want to deal with pronto.

Aveeno (a very good brand for skincare) also make very similar heavy creams.

Long story short, no, Vaseline is pretty bad choice for skincare because it just blocks all air exchange. There are better choices. You often do want petrolatum…just not 100%.

The kbin.social/stats page actually reflects a count from the instance DB, which includes federated accounts/posts/comments. Check https://kbin.social/nodeinfo/2.0 for just local instance stats, it's about 20K for kbin.social. 125K I think is lemmy and kbin combined considering all lemmy instances is ~100K, kbin.social is ~20K, and fedia.io in second place is ~2K.

fedidb.org also uses the nodeinfo (and shows the raw data when you click into a specific instance), though it lags slightly, I think by 6 hours maybe more as it still shows only ~6K for kbin.social instead of 20K.

Long and short term, which features would you like to see implemented?

For me flair is probably the most important. I follow a lot of organized sports and being able to quickly identify which team someone supports helps the conversation move along without having to write "as a fan of..." in every single comment. And this isn't a like talking shit, sports guy thing. It's genuinely extremely useful...

QuantumFilament,
  1. Greater attention to user anonymity. For example, right now, you can look at any thread/comment and see who upvoted it and who downvoted it. In addition to causing arguments and drama, it also can be used to build a profile of what a user likes or dislikes - which can have significant ramifications for many people. Users need to be able to trust in certain aspects of anonymity and have control over what information they allow to be public. That also includes public access to know who follows a particular user as well.

  2. The ability to save threads and comments.

  3. The ability to expand/collapse comment trees.

  4. Better moderation tools, including the ability to be notified when new threads are created in a magazine you moderate.

  5. The titles to threads need to directly link to the linked URL instead of opening the kbin comments page. You shouldn't need to go through twice the effort to get to the linked URL. It also adds twice the load for the kbin servers.

emzzy,

I think this defeats the purpose of (down)voting. Voting's a quick and approachable way of interacting with a post by design. By tying it to the reputation of an account, it introduces a lot of additional complexities to the voting system. Alongside "this is a post that I think should (not) get more reach," we now also have to consider "is this a post that I want to be seen with?", which is a point that can affect some people more than others, including people of marginalized demographics. It adds reason to editorialize and a compulsion justify our votes to the public, which I think -- in combination with other nuances that potentially may surround the voter, the post, and/or the poster at hand -- can make votes a lot less honest. Even if not, potentially opening up a can of worms to the internet, and potentially real life, for clicking a button, makes voting and interacting with posts less desirable, in my opinion. And what's the point of social networking if not interaction?

I do like the idea of adding accountability for the feedback that we provide on posts, just not at the cost of anonymity. I would love to see something like the labeling system from Tildes. I think it makes voting more thoughtful without making it less approachable.

Resources for reading about healthy experimentation in the bedroom?

I'm pretty well versed in the bdsm culture, but I've always wanted to read more literature on the subject. Are there any deep dives or even academic papers to look at? Specific subject matter can be whatever, but I'm mostly curious about articles that delve into WHY some people enjoy BDSM and others don't.

ViridianNott,

I read a lot of journal articles, and I think that this thesis from my alma mater seems like a good place to start. I am a biologist with no experience in sociology though, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt.
