fiat_lux,

You're most certainly not an idiot for missing or forgotten image metadata. And Cocoa is a cute one. I am glad to meet him, even sideways.

fiat_lux,

You just can't beat the dopamine hit from "pointy chaos graph go smooth". Delicious. Great work!

Additional to moving and/or securing the food source, there are a bunch of very pleasant odours cats hate that are harmless and plant-based. Lavender, citrus, mints, etc. Too strong for cat noses.

fiat_lux,

A bunch of the complaints sound like the same complaints I've heard from many companies. But it also sounds like a shit place to work, with some arrogantly poor leadership decisions.

Pretty predictable stuff from spez. If I were one of Reddit's seemingly innumerable VP's, I'd be questioning if my total compensation package is worth much anymore.

fiat_lux,

Latin has plenty of neuter gender nouns, Reddit would probably be a third declension noun as a foreign proper name. Given 'reddit' is already a third person indicative present active verb though, and verbs match the subject's gender in the instance it is a participle, essentially making Reddit non-binary and gender-fluid, this might still be confusing for some.

Fun idea for a protest.

fiat_lux,

I think I hate these so much I've looped straight back around into loving them.

Can we prevent Lemmy from being so political?

Just as the title suggest. Is there anyway we can prevent Lemmy from being such a giant sphere of political annoyance just like Reddit? No matter where you go on reddit before the API changes and even now, someone has to bring politics into it. Even in post or subreddits where it’s not needed....

fiat_lux,

I wish the worst thing about politics for me was how noisy it is. I suspect that the people who are bothered by the noise of politics are usually people who have usually never had legislation or policies introduced which can directly or indirectly get them killed.

Politics is usually at the forefront of my mind, as with many others who feel lives are at stake. As such, I think the only way to truly stop politics from being a common topic is to put fewer people in danger to begin with. I don't see that happening anytime soon.

There's also the problem of bots and paid commentary though, which is a popular way to influence social groups. But that's just the same problem as humanity has always had and are always going to have - verifying who is real and who isn't. This is a problem which will also get harder to detect and measure with further developments in machine learning. Realistically we would need some ability to authenticate a user's actual singular identity, which requires collecting and storing more personal user data. Even then, to do this with maybe sufficient accuracy would prevent many people from being able to participate. It's a huge can of worms.

So I'm afraid you will have to stick with the current hacky workaround of blocking or ignoring people and communities who discuss things which don't interest you. Much like how I have scrolled past many pictures of beans today. And you can join communities which share your definitions of politics and distaste for its pervasiveness.

fiat_lux,

Unsolicited comments on people's perceived attractiveness and the responder's desire to engage them in sexual activity.

fiat_lux,

Prison rape jokes.

fiat_lux,

Dehumanisation. I feel as though people are increasingly becoming ok with other people being punished for their involvement in something that is genuinely wrong/evil/bad. But the people experiencing the steepest punishments are almost never the people with significant culpability for the wrong/evil/bad decisions.

"Just following orders" might not be a great excuse, but punishing pawns for a king's choices isn't an effective deterrent or remedy either.

fiat_lux,

What's the drama about? I'm not keen to wander around the nsfw instances myself, but the social dynamics of taboo and moderation are intriguing.

Twitter says it couldn't tell people about rate limiting in advance | Engadget (www.engadget.com)

It seemed strange that Twitter posted this update on its business blog until the company mentioned that rate limiting has had a "minimal" effect on advertising. Many pointed out that limiting the number of tweets users could read per day would make it harder for advertisers to reach users and for Twitter to make money....

fiat_lux,

"Any advance notice on these actions would have allowed bad actors to alter their behavior to evade detection."

Alternately: Everything we do must be top secret, and it's definitely not because we're totally making it up as we go with zero actual planning or testing. We pinky swear.

I guess it's almost an improvement on their poop emoji default non-reply. It looks like this problem was big enough for them to do active damage control; Musk must have been real pissed off.

The final report — to be handed to the governor-general on Friday

At 5pm when the journos and staffers are at the pub, I assume. It's always a good idea to get ahead of the really unflattering reports.

The mighty hunter brings home a feast for their incompetent human children. So gracious.

fiat_lux,

It makes sense when you consider how liberty has been constantly redefined over history by different cultural contexts. "Liberty" to these people has been taken to mean "Our freedom to raise our children as we see fit, free from unwanted external 'worldly' influences", akin to the Christian theological interpretation of liberty. The choice of word also taps into nationalist pride, so people can easily tell they're aligning with people who would describe themselves as being "patriots".

It's an effective and insidious form of marketing that has ironically backfired on the US government, who have been perfectly happy to use the concept as a tool to get their citizens to sign up for the military and fuel the economy.

fiat_lux,

Wars of the GoFundMe. It doesn't surprise me that the one set up by the "Far Right Media Personality" would be coming out ahead. We've had "far right media personalities" here too fundraise to "support" victims of tragedies. It makes me wonder about the duty of care fund-raising sites have to ensure the money goes to what it says it's going to, because it seems a great way to launder cash.

fiat_lux,

The garden drama is the latest gaffe to plague high-profile Presbyterian schools this year.

It didn't even look that phallic, just... shonky. The ruling class truly do have much different "problems" than the plebs.

One former student with ongoing links to the college, who did not want to be identified because speaking about the garden could jeopardise her relationship with the school

Jesus wept.

fiat_lux,

Any uniqueness to your climate or location? I see a lot of green in one of your photo backgrounds, could this be built up pollen and dust bound by minerals from the rain? Maybe combined with the residue from other cleaning attempts.

I would try a bristled scrubbing brush with dish soap first. If that didn't work, I'd try the brush with a weak vinegar to see if it's a pH issue.

Another thought: this might be plastic coating on the mesh degrading after extended UV exposure. In which case you probably have to replace it, but might as well try some home chemistry first?

fiat_lux,

I can't say I ever expected to see the Supreme Court rule on hypothetical situations. Modernity is wild.

fiat_lux,

Even a centralised planning organisation can only do so much against money and exploitation here. We've seen this already with the W3C and various companies dominating planning and uptake of web standards.

I'm of the opinion that prevention measures needs to be built into the system, but I dont know what form that might take.

fiat_lux,

Owning a significant component of public discourse and actively pushing ideological viewpoints using it is politics. The only difference between that and being a politician is that you can't vote him out.

When you own more than most people alive collectively, it makes sense that your actions are under extra scrutiny.
