flipht,

This is a long standing joke - what do you call someone who believes in Satan?

A Christian.

flipht,

They understand. They just know if they say the shitty thing, it will give their bubba voters a misogyny hardon, which translates directly to votes.

flipht,

Same as last time - undoing the budget surplus, massive tax giveaways to oil and gas, and shutting off the tap to anything that helps anyone who doesn't give campaign contributions. Last time, they closed all of our state hospitalsand laid off large swathes of the state work force, and bankrupted the state's employee insurance fund. This time, I am willing to bet they gut the emergency fund at the first opportunity.

flipht,

So they amend their constitution. During a war. To force people into the streets to vote.

How does the government make sure the election is fair? Some people won't be able to vote due to danger. Some will be attacked. Some areas are occupied, and the occupation lines may change during the election.

If they tried to run an election now, Russia would publish their own results showing that the occupied areas voted for Putin. Trying to run elections is hard enough in normal times, doing so with Russia literally holding a large swath of your country is impossible.

flipht,

She claimed she'd face undue hardship because it's during the school week.

What?

She's got a husband. I bet she still has a nanny - she mentioned having one in her book. She's got two brothers that aren't going to be testifying at the same time.

The kids will be in school for 8 hours, and literally any one of those people could watch her kids for the remaining time. Normal people have to deal with this all the time.

flipht,

Republicans made a deal with JFK to phase out mental health hospitals and replace them with community based facilities that had a more home like atmosphere.

They did the gutting part.

Then JFK was assassinated.

Republicans decided that they didn't have to do any more after that, and LBJ used most of his political capital to get the voting rights act passed.

That's why our mental health system is so broken.

If republicans wanted to fix the system, they could start with funding the VA. Many of our troops wind up with mental health conditions due to their time in the service.

flipht,

Exactly. No speaker means the house grinds to a halt yet again. Which is exactly what they want - minimum attention while they lie, cheat, and steal their way into positions of authority for their next coup attempt.

flipht,

The controversy comes days after it emerged that education officials had sent a threatening letter to the parents of a boy who had complained of being bullied by classmates for months, saying their public statements complaining about the bullying were “unacceptable” and urged them to adopt a “constructive” attitude.

The boy, identified as Nicolas, 15, later killed himself on 5 September in a Paris suburb, one day after pupils went back to school after the summer break.

Oh, got it. So they fucked up real bad and are now trying make this about the police response so no one will question why they helped a bully kill his target.

flipht,

It's been released with several edits over the years. The recently released version added back several passages that were scrubbed from the ones most of us read growing up.

Anne Frank wrote a diary. It's a personal diary. It wasn't written to be published.

New pages found writing dirty jokes and about sex: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/05/16/anne-franks-hidden-diary-pages-risque-jokes-and-sex-education/

On one hand, the "sanitized" versions give the historical context without the personal, sometimes very personal, items that Anne Frank intended to be private. On the other hand, including all of her real thoughts makes it clear that she was a normal, young, very human girl.

I think the full version should be available to anyone and everyone, but I also understand if the school curriculum needs to focus on the historical aspects and thus uses one of the older releases editions. But to be honest, it seems like the people who would have a problem with this have a problem with all sexuality, and they hate anything that destroys the narrative that people can shut off that part of themselves.

flipht,

Same with the whole "social experiment" thing they accuse everyone of.

In fact, their childhoods were the biggest social experiment ever. Suburbs, nuclear families with mothers who needed uppers to do everything expected of them, easy access to free and cheap education and loans, etc. They act like it's the way things always were, and that it's the only way things should ever be.

It was all a fluke of the post war economy. Not normal, not sustainable, and trying to appease their fantasy is killing the world.

flipht,

No one will convince me he isn't doing this on purpose to tank the brand.

He and his buddies were mad that they couldn't compete. So he made the offer in a manic moment, and then was forced to go through with it. Now that he's got it, he's going to destroy it, and use the loss to reduce his taxes from all his government contracts.

And he simultaneously gets to platform fascists and silence people calling out the powerful. Wins all around.

For a normal person, this looks like failing. I totally get that. But rich people can derive massive benefits from stuff that would ruin us, and every single thing Musk is doing benefits him in some way.

flipht,

Not actually surprised. These people are evil, not stupid. He knows he drove away the low paid immigrant workers, they just want a way to blame them anyway.

Hallmark of fascism - the enemy is so strong that they'll steal your jobs, but also is weak and cowardly and deserves the poor treatment we give them.

flipht,

Not only is alcohol legal, it was made legal again after its own failed prohibition.

Exclusive: US to send depleted-uranium munitions to Ukraine (www.reuters.com)

The use of depleted uranium munitions has been fiercely debated, with opponents like the International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons saying there are dangerous health risks from ingesting or inhaling depleted uranium dust, including cancers and birth defects.

flipht,

It's not about them. It's the children who find the spent ammo later.

This crap is the reason that there are birth defects spikes anywhere the US military operates.

flipht,

This. It's a signal to the faithful that they haven't flipped. It's to let them know who is still in the hate ecosystem - the ones not smiling will start having the hate machine directed at them very shortly.

flipht,

Income tax can only tax income.

As others have said - land value / property tax is supposed to take care of this. You could also add a specific vacancy tax.

flipht,

This is a minor wave I've seen of "oopsies" posts about work from home.

And if history is any teacher, and considering that they spent the last few months pushing the "workers actually want to come back!" fantasy narrative, I expect in a few weeks the pieces will start being about blaming workers for the return to work pushes.

School board votes to fire teacher who read book on gender identity to Georgia fifth-graders (www.cnn.com)

A suburban Atlanta school board has voted to terminate the contract of a teacher who read a book about gender identity to gifted fifth-graders – the latest salvo in a nationwide clash over how issues like gender and race are discussed in public school classrooms.

flipht,

Divisive almost always means liberal in these contexts. I find the bible divisive, but I doubt any teacher would get fired for quoting or even directly reading from it.

flipht,

It's insane how many left leaning leaders were assassinated. And it isn't a coincidence that it was during the red scare. What we KNOW about McCarthyism is crazy enough, now think of all the stuff they wouldn't say out loud to fight the "red menace."

flipht,

As with most things, there are a lot of problems with the porn INDUSTRY that we as a society ignore, and instead tell individual people that all the ills are their own fault.

flipht,

I mean, these people haven't even read the laws they're supposed to be deciding cases on. You expect him to read his own website too? The privilege.

flipht,

Just goes to show you that even when rights are pretty explicitly stated, you still have to be able to be able to afford the time and money for a lawsuit when governmental entities decide otherwise.

flipht,

So, protip: at the beginning of your shift, notate the number of voicemails and notify your boss. Clear out the voicemails correctly. Notify your boss.

Keep track of the time stamps from the VM envelopes. This will help your boss identify who isn't doing their work, and is a "gentle" prompt. It may not happen immediately, but eventually there will be a bulk of data showing that it's particular people on particular shifts.

Doesn't help you to raise a fuss about it, but if you handle it and create documentation around it, it will either get resolved or you will be more justified in a decision to look for a new job. Or to ask for a raise/apply for a promotion/whatever.
