All mods of /r/self and /r/shittylifeprotips were removed and suspended for 7 days without any warning first.

We toggled to 18+ and sort of let nature take its course by only enforcing TOS. I say "we" but in reality I was the only active mod on either sub, so I do feel bad for getting awkwardtheturtle banned by association (lol). After the fact got the "It’s not ok to show people NSFW content when they don’t want to see it....

sj_zero,

Shittylifeprotip: if you run an unprofitable forum website, assert your dominance over your users by fucking with them. They'll respect that you're an alpha Chad and give you more money and views.

terath,

They came after a small sub I moderate today too. My response was to make a sticky post to the sub with the contents of the mod mail and a recommendation for everyone to move to kbin or lemmy. I hadn't planned on giving reddit any more free content anyways given their behaviour.

SirEDCaLot,

That's easy.
Reopen the sub and put a sticky post with info on how to join kbin/lemmy and encouraging users to give it a try and join the fediverse alternative sub you've created.

Then if you post any content- do it on the fediverse, and if you post it to Reddit just make it a link post to the fediverse page that has the content. Optionally disable comments or filter them.

soft_frog,

One thing I've noticed: if you land on Google from search around 20% of comments are from now deleted accounts. Try searching "best bike reddit" and see for yourself.

I think the hypothesis that power users are leaving is showing itself to be true.

That's a good idea, I have a small sub (only 20k subs) and I kept it dark till yesterday. I don't want to give Reddit the satisfaction of taking it, but putting sticky posts for kbin/lemmy seems like the way to go. I think I'll post a user guide, too.

On that subject, kbin reminds me of the Reddit I migrated to after Digg killed itself. It's a bit trickier for novices to navigate, but the interface is starting to grow on me, and I suspect that will be the case for many.

ilovesatan,
@ilovesatan@lemmy.world avatar

Can you just delete the sub? I'd prefer that to having it yanked from me. Dunno if that's even possible, never been a Reddit mod.

Bipta,

Who burned the modern Library of Alexandria? u/spez, and fuck him for it.

Kbin and Lemmy should come to a consensus on how to name stuff

Is there really a reason, for example, for there to be the distinction of "magazine" and "community"? When you're federating, the same features should be called the same, if close enough. That way everyone can talk with everyone about stuff and we all immediately understand each other....

ulu_mulu,
@ulu_mulu@lemmy.world avatar

Why? This is like going to a foreign country and demand they change their laws because you don't like them.

It's fine as they are, it doesn't take much to understand how they work, a few days of confusion won't kill anyone, having everything spoonfed to you all the time is detrimental to the mind.

Kara,
Kara avatar

Agreed, it really isn't even too confusing to explain either, Kbin uses magazines, Lemmy uses communities, but they are basically the same thing. Kbin and Lemmy are separate platforms, and shouldn't be forced to use the same terminology just because they're compatible with each other.

‘Linux’ Foundation increases number of Microsoft employees in the board of directors to THREE, the only geek in the board has left (or got removed) (techrights.org)

Summary: The Linux Foundation is gradually becoming a shadow of Microsoft, just like the Open Source Initiative, where most of the money comes from Microsoft and the official blog promotes Microsoft, its proprietary software, and Microsoft’s side in a class action lawsuit over GPL violations (with 9 billion dollars in damages...

Okay somebody quickly code up a free alternative to Linux

mo_ztt,
@mo_ztt@lemmy.world avatar

Right, this source is just weird. The story is 100% real, and honestly probably a problem to the extent that Microsoft and the Linux Foundation are even relevant anymore, but everything in this is told in this hyperbolic style that makes it hard to even make sense of.

just like the Open Source Initiative, where most of the money comes from Microsoft

Is this true? This doesn't sound true.

and the official blog promotes Microsoft, its proprietary software, and Microsoft’s side

https://blog.opensource.org/

https://www.linuxfoundation.org/blog

What is this even talking about? Where does whichever of these blogs this is talking about promote Microsoft's proprietary software?

in a class action lawsuit over GPL violations (with 9 billion dollars in damages at stake).

I was really curious because I hadn't heard of this. It turns out it's the Github Copilot lawsuit. I could be wrong, but I've looked and I couldn't find this $9 billion number anywhere else; it sounds like it's arrived at by simply assuming that 1% of code that Copilot produces is infringing, and computing DMCA damages based on that 1%. It's not really clear to me whether that argument was just an illustrative example of the scope of the problem, or whether they're actually asking for $9 billion, but I tend to assume the former. In other venues when the litigants have been asked what remedy they want, they've said things like, "We’d like to see them train their AI in a manner which respects the licenses and provides attribution," as opposed to "we want $9 billion."

Etc etc. I picked out a little excerpt, but the whole article is written like this which makes me look at it sideways.

TootSweet,

Guess we're resurrecting HURD.

GameWiz,

I like Linux, I hate the app names. It's confusing as hell, especially if you are looking for some app that functions the way you imagine, then they name something weird like Nautilus instead of file explorer lmao.

dhork,

If nothing else, this proves that Reddit admins don't fundamentally understand the platform. They may understand the back-end, and how to interact with ad servers to monetize content, but they don't understand how to effectively moderate communities. it never occured to them that they would need to scrub all the NSFW content before removing the tag?

In some places, that may even be illegal. And the Reddit admins have no one but themselves to blame, because they're the one that removed the tag without due diligence.

I've given up all hope for Reddit as a platform now. Mods should give up, too, and resign en masse. The Admins may be able to assign a few dozen of the largest subs to those power mods who are already favored by the Royal Court, but If this is any indication they have no way to maintain all of Reddit without the unpaid volunteer community they are shitting on.

Microsoft is surprisingly pro-FOSS - probably more than any of the others in "big tech." It's the same reason MS isn't in the FAANG acronym. They've consistently forwarded and contributed to the FOSS community over the past several years. They have massive stakes in the linux foundation, which is either conspiracy or just a shift in attitude (i haven't decided myself yet). For a more concrete example, with LLMs, Microsoft (despite basically owning OpenAI) is contributing to free and open-source language model development, with Orca and TBAAYN, as well as publishing free and open-source tooling for LLM, such as the guidance repository.

Jerry,

Yeah. I noticed the typo right after I uploaded the message. I quickly edited it but I find that changes made to a message take a while to replace the original.

I currently have 303 magazines, 301 pointing to several other KBIN and Lemmy instances. I visited several instances and manually linked to magazines that had a lot of users. Magazines from anywhere else can be added by using the global search (the search icon at the very top), not the search associated with the magazine listings, and using the full name, like @linux

The magazines can be seen at https://feddit.online/magazines

I read about r/celebrities it was the original creator of the sub, who had run it alone for the vast majority of the subs existence. How many more this happened to, I dunno, but I feel for those creators - what a kick in the guts.

Is this the official r/piracy now, will the megathread be updated for this?

A lot has happened since the reddit protests and the actual subreddit is completely unusable now. What will happen to the mods that were originally updating the megathread, because that thing is literally my life at this point and with increasing actions being taken by corporates to stop piracy, how long do we have on the...

emacsen, to emacs

As an Emacs user with an Emacs themed domain, it made me sad to have to post a Fediblock against emacs.ch, but after getting nowhere with the admin and multiple users (including me) being targeted for harassment, it had to be done.

@emacsen Since you are directly talking about me personally, I have the conversion archived. I ask you to make the whole conversation public (and not only parts of it) including the conversion that happend during the 8 hours of work I did together with your lead moderator in the CryptoPad document and I wrote and was amended by your lead moderator.

We followed your demands to the letter, admonished our user and, with in consultation with your lead mod, we deferated to ensure the safety of your and our community.

Your post puts what actually happened in a false light and it saddens me. As the admin of our instance, it is my job to ensure that the rules are followed, but also for the safety of our users, who come from all walks of life incl. Jews, Arabs, Christians, Buddhists, LGBTQ+. Whart unites us is our passion for technology and mutual respect for each other.

Even though I have invested over 8 hours of time and was still praised by your lead moderator for how quickly we responded in contrast to the set of other instances you take action against and we have developed a common understanding of the situation, you now make such public accusations. That is really very hard to swallow.
