sadakos_left_nut,

I want to go back to the 50s because of high corporate tax rates. You want to go back to the 50s because minorities were afraid. We are not the same.

I can speak for nobody but myself. I love it here. I'm an amateur developer, I'm a lover of old computers, and I've experienced a couple different flavors of internet interaction over the years. This has been a cool experience, and even if most of the major content went back to Reddit, I won't return with them.

I feel like kbin and others are here to stay. Will Redditors come here? Maybe, maybe not. If so, it's just a new community. Once federation kicks in, it'll be an even bigger community. It'll smooth out ^^

How to Get Started with Tree-Sitter (www.masteringemacs.org)

Emacs 29 introduces tree-sitter support, a powerful parsing library that enhances its understanding of source code. With this integration, Emacs gains features like precise syntax highlighting, accurate indentation and easier extensibility. Here's how you install and configure Emacs with tree-sitter support.

missrigatoni,

Yep. I want to donate too, and would be much easier if it could be a monthly payment through my credit card. Sometimes we forget, and some of us already have a lot of payment reminders spamming our notifications. I can't donate much, since dollars are very expensive, but I want to help as much as I can

With the help of ChatGPT I made a userscript that enables collapsing comments and their children:
https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/468449-kbin-collapsible-comments

It adds a little chevron you can click next to the time in the header of comments.

Pssst... any ideas for a domain name for the new instance?

Hi there! I've been trying to improve the situation for the past few hours. I managed to disable CF Protection, and as you can see, I'm gradually allowing traffic from the fediverse. There may still be delays in deliveries and posts for some time. If anything is particularly troublesome, please let me know through the contact...

Kichae,

People may dissagree, but I think that in the longterm the fediverse will look much more like email, being a ecosystem of single providers, instead of a plattform consisting of many sub-providers

Allow me to be the first.

This is exactly the opposite of the value proposition of the Fediverse. It's going from the internet being 5 websites to the internet bring 5 other websites. It's merely and change in ownership, and that should be avoided at the ideological level.

the long term this is a battle for the one big forum provider, the place people will go to have reddit-style groups in the fediverse. If you are smart and want to beat Lemmy to the dust

This is weird corporate monopolist thinking, and it's a fucking mind virus. Lemmy doesn't need to be beaten. The Fediverse is fundamentally a cooperative exercise, and deciding that some other piece of software needs to be crushed to dust is not healthy for that exercise.

We don't need that shit here. None of this needs to wholesale replace corporate social media. It doesn't need 3 billion users to succeed. We shouldn't want it to look and behave like the purposefully toxic spaces, and we don't need to behave like the sociopaths that run them.

Thank you so much for your support! 😍

I just saw an email from Buy Me a Coffee. Not just one. I went in, and I'm truly shocked. Thank you all for the support; I would like to thank each and every one of you individually someday. Honestly, I don't know what to say. The account balance is $350, which will definitely allow me to develop kbin faster or at least not...

I am stunned how well the place is holding up, well done. The odd little issue is to be expected. The next few weeks could be crazy, so look after yourself.

Maybe that's something the community can help with. It's also often better received when someone else says something positive about a project or service.

So let's spread the word about Kbin and do some promo for ernest!

/kbin quick update

As you noticed, I had to temporarily enable DDoS protection. Someone is trying quite effectively to distract me from my activities ;p Unfortunately, this may cause some issues with the federation. I will try to cut off the traffic as soon as possible and return to normal operation. Thank you for all your support and patience! :)

Appreciate the work you are doing and it's been cool watching kbin develop so rapidly! Uptime has been impressive given the circumstances.

Like any similar site it will succeed or fail on the back of the community it manages to attract and keep, but I have to say that for me KBin feels far more like a natural workflow than Lemmy. I think I'll stay!

/kbin - Just Reddit Things update

Hey, once again, I welcome the newcomers. It's great to see new faces here :) It seems that we've managed to resolve the server issue. Unfortunately, I had to temporarily disable certain features, such as content auto-refresh. It will be restored at the beginning of next week after the infrastructure change, so you'll get to...

Kbin.social has been maintained on a VPS for €16.11/month up until now. Currently, I have upgraded it to the highest package to handle as much traffic as possible when the worst comes. It now costs €66.91/month.

These are the statistics with approximately 7000 unique visitors per hour and a fairly intensive usage of the site, including the entire federation. That's all I know for now.

TIL how M-x align works in . Previously it hadn't been doing anything when i ran it. But, I was trying to figure out how to align ruby hash values in an initialization, and came across some alignment rules for ruby

https://github.com/jimweirich/emacs-setup-esk/blob/master/ruby-align.el

loaded those, ran it... and EMACS IS FUCKING MAGIC!

The great thing about Emacs and Vim is that there's SO MUCH amazing stuff just waiting for you to turn it on... when you're ready.

For kbin it is:

In the Terms of Service it is shown the deleting your account all of your data is gone.

In the privacy policy it states that the servers are in Germany so GDPR is followed. It does not track nor it uses JavaScript.

So what's the problem here?

Hermitix,

I just registered here after reading the RIF announcement. I won't be using the official app, so I guess that's the end of an era for me!

I like this significantly better than Mastodon

My experience with the Fediverse has only been through Mastodon, through which I struggled to find a community I really gelled with. Either it was supper overwhelming with meme posts or NSFW, or it was too chill to the point of nothing. Or, it was hyperfocused like FOSS/Linux and became uninteresting after awhile. May try again,...

Personally I find Kbin more usable (while still being reddit-like) as it also has functionality letting you follow on normal microblogging content from Mastodon and other places, making it more intertwined with the whole fediverse.

My startup banner makes me happy, every day.

Slartibartfast,

It's not on Lemmy? Guess I won't see it then.

/kbin update - upvotes, boosts, languages...

Hi everyone, You may have noticed a small change on the website. From now on, upvotes work just like on Lemmy - they are equivalent to Mastodon's "favourite." You can boost a post using the button that replaced "favourite." Another change is that you can now rate and boost your own posts. Boosting has a one-time effect - it...
