I'd like to take my RSS feeds from an aggregator of news to a curated selection of interesting things. Interesting newsletters and blogs are where I think RSS shines, but I struggle to find this content....
I've been using Newsblur for a few years now and it's been great. It's very configurable. They have a hosted version or you can run your own. https://www.newsblur.com/
As a non US person, it's baffling to me that there's this whole background of being "the land of the free", but half the country would want to turn it into Saudi Arabia 2.0, Christian Boogaloo.
That said, anyone of you over there who are opposing these changes, keep up the fight. When one country gets more conservative others will follow. There's no country in earth immune to this.
@lens_r@screwtape@rml@zrzz hey, now i can finally see kbin posts from mastodon/.el, hi @lens_r. looks like you can also see mine. nice! earlier it seems like federation was only kinda symbolic or something. (perhaps communities/groups are what is lacking?) EDIT: yeah, it's that lemmy communities show in masto as users, with no posts. this is a server-side issue also.
Please help collecting statistics to optimize Emacs GC defaults
Many of us know that Emacs defaults for garbage collection are rather ancient and often cause singificant slowdowns. However, it is hard to know which alternative defaults will be better.
Turns out, pretending the entire Internet is equal to 5 apps from mega corps (largely fueled by pretend money) wasn't the best long term play.
Who would have thought?
The dev, @hariette, also has a Mastodon profile where she posts updates https://tech.lgbt/@hariette. There is also a link to the apps discord server in her bio.
It's not exactly the same. The Free Software movement is about user freedom. Open Source is a term used by corporations to avoid mentioning that users should have rights.
Medium already has an instance, and so does Vivaldi. Tumblr is planning on supporting federation. Although not really a corporate, Mozilla is also setting up its own instance (which is something I am happy about).
Worst of all, Meta is coming up with an ActivityPub platform. I am going to dread the day when my timeline will be flooded with posts from them.
The mods there have decided to allow underage looking content, skirting close to CP. Unless we want such disgusting stuff on our feed, I think we should defederate from that instance....
I think it's necessary to monitor the situation and how they will handle moderation, but for now, I would prefer to do it from a distance from kbin. There is currently a significant issue with moderation, and disturbing content can remain up for too long. I'm working on improving this issue as well.
many of us would like to simply have full federation and curate content ourselves, though it's understandable that moderation needs to happen in some cases.
Agreed. I think the emphasis needs to be on usage of NSFW tagging, and making sure users have the ability to block magazines that they think are borderline (or just bad at tagging their content) without having to click into that magazine.
That said, I would not be opposed to a middle ground where entire instances can be flagged as NSFW so that their content is automatically tagged. 1) Instances should be able to voluntarily tag themselves like this so that all posts originating from that instance are automatically tagged, and 2) admins of other instances should be given the option to flag other instances as NSFW to their local instance as an alternative to defederating. There is still some room for overreaction with #2, but it's still putting control in the hands of that instance's users whether they want to interact with that content or not.
Their post announcing it, has comments disabled. I have been going on reddit looking for polls to vote "yes" to continue to participate in the blackout. This was kind of a bummer....
June 30th is gonna be real interesting once the reality of the situation sets in. I encourage everyone here to be the change you want to see - don't be afraid to participate here and create a new magazines for any niche interest you may have!
After years of using reddit, i finally deleted everything including my account there. Personally, i am not affected by the api prices, BUT, i couldn't live with me supporting people, who see their userbase, moderators and creators as nothing but noise. The point i'm making? The reddit blackout is even more effectivte than expected! 5177/8829 (~60%) of subreddits are still dark [1] and the posts per minute are down to 1000 from 1400 [2]....
The fediverse is definitely feeling like the early internet, and it's really taken me by surprise. Even though I reminisced about it and lamented it's loss, I think I never really understood just how much I missed it.
I know this may be a dumb question, but: are there any guides about using #orgmode? Not about how to use, they key bindings but rather how to it effectively - like how big files are best and so on. I know this should come from experience, but since I'm only 6 months in #emacs, having some inherited knowledge would be very useful!
