Mudkipology,

I don’t think this is just to spite Meta, they’re known for tracking everything under the sun and there are serious security concerns about what info they may acquire if you unwittingly interact with a post on Threads from another server.

As someone who first switched to lemmy, and then quickly switched to kbin due to rampant de-federation in the lemmy world, I say I just first heard about lemmy.
But, Kbin is much more modern, and spectating the changes done in the last days alone, it moves fast and attracts many developers while all lemmy 0.18 did was breaking federation with kbin. I can fully recommend the switch to Kbin, its that good.

There is also the issue of Lemmy being developed by a group of genocide denying tankies.

About Tildes, it seems to be more of a clone of Digg in the old days.

Walters was paid approximately $120,000 a year by Every Kid Counts Oklahoma compared to his state salary of $40,000. The Frontier and Oklahoma Watch reported that Every Kid Counts Oklahoma was funded by national school privatization advocates and charter school expansion advocates, such as the Walton Family Foundation and another group founded by Charles Koch.

I disagree that the admin of an instance doesn't have the right to moderate it how they wish. By joining the server you agree to let that admin control what content you see on your instance. That's how instances work. It's still on you to agree/disagree with the admin and how they run the server. That's why other servers exist and you have the complete right to associate with who you wish, or even run your own instance and run it how you like.

I do not agree with the people wanting to control other servers by trying to force defederating from threads. Independent admins running their own server is what the Fediverse is built upon.

No, it isn't a difficult concept to grasp. I'm reminding people that, unless you know who you are talking to personally, they literally could be anyone, especially people who are here with agendas.

Nougat,

The Shell chief executive, who took up the post last September, also argued that poorer countries would bear the brunt of a gas shortfall if they were unable to compete for shipments on the global market.

“What would be dangerous and irresponsible is cutting oil and gas production so that the cost of living, as we saw last year, starts to shoot up again,” Sawan told the BBC.

That's not wrong, but it's from a biased perspective. It is true that if we were to reduce supply of a primary energy source, that the wealthy would continue on mostly as normal, and the poor would bear most of the suffering, with a side of "wealth moving from rish people to even richer people."

His position, though, comes from the perspective of "Because I'm a hammer, that must be a nail." Yes, it is important to be aware of the effects of reducing fossil fuel production without replacing that with another energy solution. A much better way to realize reduction in fossil fuel production would be to make renewable and green energy sources even more prominent, and economically competitive. Giving the world other economically viable options will reduce demand for fossil fuels.

Big oil companies like Shell can either pivot to embrace new energy technologies or risk becoming less relevant.

From the article:

Melissa Gira Grant of the New Republic contacted Stewart, using the email and phone number included in the lawsuit. He denies having sent that request, pointing out that he is already married, to a woman.

Person whose name and phone number appears in lawsuit is contacted, denies making a request, is married to woman.

Yeah, super crazy fucking reality here.

cazyius,

They finally did it: Reddit made it impossible for blind Redditors to moderate their own sub

Since the latest “accessibility” update to the Reddit app, the amount and magnitude of new accessibility related bugs has made it virtually impossible for blind mods to operate on mobile.

We have done absolutely everything we could to work with Reddit and have given them every opportunity. When they offered to host a demo of the update, we understood how little they understand about accessibility: they did not respond to a request to use the app with screen curtain on. The only fair conclusion is that they cannot use it without sight, but expect us to.

The update introduced various regressions and new bugs. This is entirely within the expectations of the mod team, given how rushed it was and how Reddit continues to demonstrate how underprepared they are to deal with accessibility.

But what about the “accessibility apps?”

They may not work. At this time, it is impossible to log into RedReader.

They shouldn’t have to work. Reddit made a business decision to effectively remove users’ access to third-party apps and must assure that access by its own means.

What now for r/Blind?

The subreddit will continue operating under the care and stewardship of its visually impaired and sighted moderators.

Let us be clear: r/Blind cannot be moderated by blind people.

Reddit has a single path forward

As u/rumster, founder of r/Blind and a CPWA Certified Professional of Web Accessibility, told Reddit admins in our first meeting, Reddit needs to hire a CPWA. It has been patently obvious that the company does not have the know-how to address these accessibility issues, as we explained on the update on the second meeting.

To build the required internal structure and processes, and create an accessible platform, they must:

Create and fill the position of “Chief Accessibility Officer.” This role must have oversight over development as well as the ability to set internal and public Reddit policy. This person should have the ability to halt any corporate strategy or initiative within Reddit as a company and/or any feature, update, etc. to the Reddit website and/or apps until they believe the impact on accessibility for disabled redditors by said strategy, initiative, feature, update, etc. has been fully addressed, implemented, ensured, and/or mitigated. The person filling this role should have both development and managerial experience and hold at least the Certified Professional of Web Accessibility (CPWA) certification as issued by the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP). This person should also be disabled and an active Redditor and must coordinate communication with disabled users and their communities.

Reddit must commit to ensuring training and certification of all developers responsible for accessible and inclusive design. Lead developers must be trained and certified at least to the level of Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) as issued by the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), but ideally should hold the “Certified Professional of Web Accessibility (CPWA).”

Fully implement an alternative text (alt text) function for photos and videos in which posters can compose descriptions for blind and visually impaired users.

Implement a closed-captioning system for videos, thus allowing deaf and deafblind Redditors full access to the audio content of videos.

Implement a single dedicated point of contact for accessibility and disability issues in the form of an email address: accessibility@reddit.com.

Ultimately and crucially, commit to comply with theWCAG at level AA and ATAG standards.

Disability is a social issue and software must be tested

As u/MostlyBlindGamer explained to Reddit admins in modmail, “disability” is an interaction between a person’s physical or mental characteristics and society’s barriers. Your website’s barriers. You are making people disabled by breaking your website and apps. Your organization’s unwillingness and/or inability to hire actual experts is what’s making people disabled. We’re not disabled, because we can’t see like you can: we’re disabled, because crunching developers, who don’t have the necessary training and experience, for a week, predictably, caused regressions. If I don’t test my code, people die. When you don’t test your code, because you don’t know how to, you make people disabled.

If Reddit Inc wants to deny service to disabled people, they must make that statement

As u/DHamlinMusic said, this update made no functional changes beyond the add/remove favorites button in the community’s list being labeled and changing state properly, yet it added dozens of new issues, made moderating significantly harder and should never have been released to start. If Reddit’s intention is to just not have disabled users on reddit come out and say it instead of pulling this landlord trying to empty a rent controlled building bullshit.

Disabled redditors will not accept being quietly whisked away, nor will the broader Reddit community. People make Reddit and people can break Reddit.

Considering that r/Blind is apparently having issues getting Reddit to listen to them when it comes to accessible tools, I’m not sure I believe Reddit on this.

Endorkend,

They promise this each and every time there is a conflict between Reddit and the userbase.

For as long as the platform has existed.

Them neglecting to actually implement anything is the very reason so many external applications came to be.

And the very few times they actually did start releasing some accessibility or moderation tools, as soon as any conflict died down, they stopped developing those features and left them in a half finished state or removed them down the line.

Or they do ridiculous shit like trying to market their "new" reddit user interface and app as being accessible and having tools, while in reality, even fully able users can't work with that pile of shit.

Niello,

I get having megathreads, but currently kbin doesn't care whether a post on Lemmy is pinned, so megathreads make it harder here to follow news and discussions on the topic.

For me:

  1. Privacy reasons. When a comment is "deleted" on Lemmy, the comment is actually only hidden to all except instance administrators. The comment remains on the post and continues to display the poster's username. kbin is also not a beacon of privacy, but it at least removes deleted comments from threads. This is also why I try to interact more on kbin magazines than Lemmy communities.

  2. kbin has a sweet community search tool that not only searches kbin magazines, but also Lemmy communities and even Mastodon groups. This means you can easily find communities all across the for any of your interests.

  3. kbin has a much nicer/more modern UI. It's got some quirks, but it's easier to read and navigate than Lemmy by default.

  4. Customization options! Lemmy has themes, which is cool, but kbin has themes and lots of fun toggles to change your experience.

  5. Last but certainly not least, Lemmy devs have a pretty shit stance on human rights. (See here: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106835057054633379). There are communities like , which are super friendly and non-problematic instances separate from the Lemmy devs, but it's worth noting that instances like Lemmy's flagship instance and Lemmygrad are run by folks with some grossly misguided views.

Crassly, this whole farce has left me with the impression that most Reddit employees spend most of their time playing Freecell and jerking off, and the sudden expectation that they actually accomplish something has caught them entirely off guard.

So after saying for weeks, if not months, that the new pricing wasn’t designed to kill third-party apps, he’s now saying the exact opposite? And thus admitting that Reddit lied to its community for the whole?

Please, can someone give to this dude any PR training? Even the bare minimum would be an improvement at this point.

Yes, but right now it’s inaccessible. My moderator queue is flooded with people trying to access information they need and know is on my subreddit because it was still the top result in their Google search.

I’m not reopening my subreddit any time in the near future, but there is absolutely collateral damage here. When the dust settles I may choose to move my subreddit from private to read-only.

I tried Raddle and the people there are crazy. I gave it a fair chance but even calling someone "he" is seen as an attack because I didn't instruct myself "whether or not the person wanted to be called he or she or they". This is the hill they are dying on.

I tried lemmy and the big problem is that people are attracted to the most populated subs, namely the subs hosted on lemmy.ml, which is administrated by the crazy chinese. It doesn't matter if you register yourself on beehaw, you will still talk on lemmy.ml, and when you are banned because you said "Taiwan number one" or because you insulted Putin, then you are out of the biggest channels. You can still talk on your own server, sure, but you will talk in a ghost town. The federation model has a limit. This is why we should populate Kbin and not jump on the lemmy.ml ship when the cloudflare component is eventually removed. Build here, stay here.

/kbin quick update

As you noticed, I had to temporarily enable DDoS protection. Someone is trying quite effectively to distract me from my activities ;p Unfortunately, this may cause some issues with the federation. I will try to cut off the traffic as soon as possible and return to normal operation. Thank you for all your support and patience! :)
