Hey yall, I want to get into self-hosting. I want to start from hosting on a raspberry pi, and I am just wondering if yall have any recommendations (I've never hosted anything before, but have experience in linux and programming). Sorry if it's bit of a stupid question.

jellyfin
smb server
syncthing
tftp with wake on lan / clonezilla to backup your other machines

a vpn is probably not great, a cheap VPS in linode (because it has one click wireguard vpses) is probably better and wont get caught on captchas / anti spam filters
i think level1techs on yt covered it. it is basically a rented computer you can have for yourself. more importantly the traffic that goes through it is only your own so no captchas
That’s it. I’m throwing in the towel. Linux ricing is not for me. I’m deleting #archlinux and installing #Ubuntu. It’s dumb to think I can just walk off the street and make a better desktop environment than teams of people dedicated to that. Looking forward to actually doing the stuff I want to on my device rather than modifying dotfiles all night.
Since rpis have been almost impossible to find, I've been looking around for alternatives for some local self hosted services like home assistant. A lot of boards seem to talk about GPU, GPIO pins, etc. But I really just want a single board, fanless (low power), decent CPU and RAM, ethernet....

In your opinion, which FOSS software is by many considered "old" or "obsolete", but are in fact, in your opinion, in many ways better than the newer alternatives?

Remember signatures? I think it's about time those made a comeback.
Maybe I'm just feeling nostalgic for forums. Maybe it would clutter up the comments. What do you all think?
Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?
