I wouldn't be surprised if the large "mainstream" Lemmy and KBin instances start defederating from the NSFW focused instances before too long.

The fact that it had no blood in it is a sign that it likely wasn't there long, so the odds of you obtaining a tick-borne disease are very low. A tick needs to be embedded for a decent length of time to really have any odds of spreading a disease (I've heard anywhere from 10-24 hours although this is likely affected by multiple factors), and even if embedded long enough, the odds are still pretty low.

Lyme disease is only carried by one genus of ticks that I'm aware of (Ixodes), so if you have a picture of the tick or remember what it looks like clearly enough, you can try to find out whether it was Ixodes or not. Even if it's not Ixodes, other ticks can carry other types of tick-borne disease (Rocky Mountain fever, Ehrlichiosis, etc).

The only thing to keep an eye out at this point is to see if symptoms form. The main things you're looking for are fever and/or rash/inflammation in the affected area. If you do get symptoms, it could also just be a regular infection, but nonetheless you should see a doctor and explain about the tick and when/where you might have gotten it. If there are symptoms, all that you'll have to do generally is to go through a round of anti-biotics if you catch it quickly enough (usually more severe complications don't start occuring til a couple weeks in).

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion or GTA 4. 100% nostalgia picks since these are the games that I played endlessly as a preteen into high school. I would maybe throw Pokemon R/B/Y in there too since those were the games I played endlessly until I was old enough to start detasseling and buy myself GTA 4, Oblivion, and an Xbox 360

Still trudging ever so slowly through Crossroads of Twilight. I've barely been reading lately, hopefully I can find the willpower to finish it out so I can move on to the next books which I've heard get more interesting.

I agree with just simple kbinner. Kbinauts and kbean are just too cutesy/gimmicky and imo are kinda cringey, especially if you start using it in regular speech ever.

I'm not very well versed on plant pathogens but this appears to be some type of rose rust (Phragmidium sp) to me.

E: Maybe more safe to say in the family Phragmidiaceae instead of Phragmidium specifically, but Phragmidium might be a good starting spot, especially if you know the rose species it's growing on

OC What are you currently reading, and general thoughts so far?

Hey there, I am curious what everyone is reading and how you are feeling with it. I started demon copperhead yesterday, made it about 70 pages in and decided to read the first book in the chthulu CaseBooks. It's a kinda retelling of Sherlock Holmes but with a Lovecraft quist....

I'm currently reading Crossroads of Twilight by Robert Jordan. It's a pretty rough experience so far; I've basically been reading it extremely slowly since it's boring af about 50% of the way so far. This is definitely the peak of the "slog" so far that other people who have read Wheel of Time mention.

Yes, slime molds usually fruit once conditions are right, they generally just go unnoticed since the fruiting structures for most species are 1-5 mm in size.

I ended up with kbin.social since I liked the interface, liked the roadmap and existing integration with Mastodon, and because that instance was the one everyone was suggesting for KBin at the time. I'll most likely spin up my own instance for myself and maybe a small group of others to join.

Where I live, transit is just not good enough to rely on. I use it occasionally to get to some bars and back but even then the route I use for that stops running at like 9:30 PM so there's not really an option to stay out very late. And this tie runs on one of the busiest corridors in my city. I would definitely use transit much more if it had better levels of service.

Just a correction, 135,000 is 0.2% of 52,000,000, not .002%. If 135,000 users was .002% of Reddit's daily active users, that would mean Reddit would have over 6 billion daily active users.

I'm very much a generalist and don't necessarily ever set out to find anything specifically; I'm more generally interested in finding what all exists in my area. But, one group that I really would like to start finding and sequencing from my locality is the truffles (or hypogeous ascomycetes in general). I don't think we get any of the well-known edible truffles around me but it'd be super cool to start developing a list of the species in my area, especially since it's basically a complete unknown where I live. One other that I've been interested in trying to find are Gyromitras just because I think they look cool. Haven't found any in my local area but I did find two or three different species within like 10 minutes of each other up in the Colorado Rockies this past week.

I do personally believe they're generally very abundant in just about any woodland area, but it is tough to find exactly where they're at. One guy I know that's an ecologist at a park mostly dominated by red oaks has found a few very interesting specimens simply by walking through with a very powerful leaf blower preparing an area for a prescribed burn. He simply found them by blowing off the top layer of leaf debris and finding them sticking out of the soil a little bit.

Nice! Would it be possible to use a little +/- icon somewhere on each comment instead of having it be clicking anywhere on the comment? I could see myself very regularly accidentally collapsing stuff when I don't mean to.

Really just accidentally clicking while hovering over the comment, which is especially more likely when using a touchpad on a laptop. It may not be that big of an issue if you've handled stuff like links and highlighting, but I guess in my head I like having one clear spot to click to trigger a functionality, but I do see the reasoning now that you mention mobile, and I agree that having a tiny little icon would be way more annoying on mobile than the occasional misclick on desktop.

I ride an ebike that was sold by a local company to me. Pretty sure it was just some generic Chinese model with the local store's branding stuck to it. I'm planning on giving that to my girlfriend once I get myself something new; I'm thinking maybe the Aventon Abound.

Naturalism (e.g. botany, mycology, entomology, birding, etc.). All you really need to do is to go out into nature and start asking questions about the things you see that interest you then try to find answers to those questions using the internet or books. A phone with a camera helps (I assume most people these days have this already) so you can take pics to reference later or to upload to an app like iNat. Spending a small amount of money on a field guide for your area of interest and your geographical area would be highly suggested as well. But at the core, it's really just going into nature and learning about the things around us.
