Tom Mulcair: These conservative politicians claim they're protecting kids, but they're making victims of them (www.ctvnews.ca)

If it were an oblique attack against people for who they are in terms of their religion or ethnicity, calling out that prejudice would be a slam dunk. Most segments of our society would denounce it. No serious politician would ever get close to it....

Favorite uses for cucumbers (beehaw.org)

Just inherited a bunch of cucumbers from a friend’s garden. I love them just on their own with some salt, and have made many a salad using them. I’m curious what kinds of fun things you all may use them for. Even if you feel like it’s basic please share as I will be eating cucumbers for the next several days straight lol....

For those of us not in the US, I think this also highlights the real need to loosen the US's stranglehold on the Internet at large. The US has disproportionate power to control content on the Internet as a whole, because so many services and so much infrastructure resides there.

This highlights the importance of building redundant services elsewhere in the world, and moving content outside the US in general. So if the US tries to remove LGBTQ+ content in some cultural crusade, you laugh at them. Make them firewall it, like China, if they don't like it.

Gods, this is so accurate. A part of me wish we could just isolate the U.S. for a bit, because I’d be curious to see how that’d affect the discourse in the rest of the world. The rise of the far right and Trump legitimately being voted in as president legitimised the far-right movements in my country as well. Last election people were literally pushing for the stop-and-frisk BS to become a thing here.

I hate that I know what stop-and-frisk even is.

Wats0ns,

Yup, they’re bringing the whole world down with them

CaptObvious,

Suffocation cannot possibly be considered “humane.”

The US frankly terrifies me these days.

Ok, so gas chambers again

Edit: my issue is not with the inhumanity, there is no way the state can humanely kill people. I’m wary that republican governments desire the kind of infrastructure that can quickly and cheaply kill many people at a time, boxcars full, in fact

OC I realized why I enjoy Linux so much and why I've stuck with it all these years (slight vent)...

In a world where nothing seems to work anymore, especially anything related to tech and/or customer service, getting on my laptop running Linux Mint just feels like a breath of fresh air. And that goes for just about any distro. It's nice to have something that works as it should and doesn't seem to go out of its way to cause...

Definitely agree with this sentiment. Another aspect for myself -- When I tell Linux to do something, it fucking does something. No questions, no obfuscating, no disallowing in order to "save me from myself". I have a significantly increased sense of control over MY hardware with Linux.

It is frankly unfathomable to consider going back to the telemetry / spyware laden corporate controlled systems of the mainstream OSes.

JokeDeity,

The phrase “conservative pop culture” feels like an oxymoron.

Love it. I was wondering the other day when we'd see a return to "simple" games like pool. Can you imagine the graphics power of today's games applied to "just" pool? Instead of 1000 things exploding, you could have a true ambient scene that was ever-changing and create different locales etc. Someday?

Shou,

Speak for yourself. My cats never scratched me on purpose.

Professor_Piddles,

When I was four years old, my dad shaved his mustache, and I swear to God I thought it was a stranger who came out of the bathroom and I ran away screaming.

I think that sums up the cognitive state of these particular conspiracists.

norawibb,

This is a completely different topic but okay.

Since you want specifics, veganism isn’t actually about animals, its about sentient beings. I wouldn’t eat a cow or a dog or a human, because they each have the capacity to suffer and the desire to live. Anything that has this capacity is off the table for vegans. Even bugs, while obviously being less sentient than a cow or human, still demonstrate this in some capacity. So no, I just eat plants and fungi. Technically I could eat a jellyfish or even an oyster (although vegans debate it), since this capacity has not been demonstrated by them. Why would I harm others for my own pleasure/sustenance when there is an alternative, especially an alternative that is cheaper, healthier, and far more sustainable?

Yeast is a fungus by the way.

petitioning for a fucking emoji epitomizes the criticism that social media is a vehicle for diverting action into impotent dialogue.

since we’re on the subject

retributive violence against individual actors is not the same as dismantling oppressive systems, and should not eclipse the important work of creating resilient communities and networks of mutual aid to replace those heirarchies.

wildtamaskan,

This feels so wrong to use someone’s likeness withiut their permission after their passing

Dashmaybe,

Y’know, in my darkest moments, I’ve taken solace in the fact that suicide would also mean I wouldn’t have to partake in capitalism anymore.

This feels like literal hell. Not even suicide will let you escape.

whoever holds the rights to your likeness.

what a gross phrase
