roguetrick,

Yo, but seriously. If you like having your head in your ass, you should do it. Empower yourself and don't let anyone yuck your yum.

roguetrick,

Seems the researcher's concept is to have data on both sides of the disc and have it sitting in a datacenter. I don't really buy the use case.

roguetrick, (edited )

That's a funny kbin thumbnail bug. Olaf Scholz response to this data breach is a little overboard.

roguetrick,

Kim Stanley Robinson is likely one of the best sci fi authors alive. You generally can't go wrong with his stuff.

roguetrick,

Being unjustly confined in a prison is still a direct contributing cause to a stroke or pulmonary embolism. There's a reason they still make folks in solitary in the US do "yard time."

roguetrick,

It's actually a normal sized gavel and she has a persecution complex about her height. She joined the Republican party so she could hurt others life she's been hurt

roguetrick,

Well, you're the expert @Zombiepirate

roguetrick,

What's the point in burying the fact that he didn't have ID. You could argue they carded you because you were black but not refused service.

roguetrick,

Arguing with staff until your son cries because you don't have ID on you generally makes me think of you as an asshole.

roguetrick,

I do, but making a big deal over his white grandad not getting carded is a bit much for me.

roguetrick,

I'm an anti racist skinhead who's also worked in retail. I'm not at the point that I accept that this wasn't a tantrum, but I accept there might be discriminatory elements. I don't really know how carding works in the UK, but in the US if someone asks you're not getting service if all you've got on you is your cell phone.

roguetrick,

What, you wanna check the tag on my Fred Perry shirt?

roguetrick,

Uh huh.

roguetrick,

What you're describing has historically happened actually, but only in situations of the little people vs the banks. In the end, if the federal government feels authorized to seize your property, it will do so and shoot you if you get in the way.

roguetrick,

That has to do with the fact that the entire American chicken industry is exploitative to the people raising the chickens as well as the chickens. Since the factory is both the hatchery and the processing plant, the farmers never even own the chickens. They're more like babysitting them by taking out a loan from the bank. They get squeezed, default, and somebody else comes along to keep it up. Reasonably this sort of business practice should be outlawed as anti-competitive.

roguetrick,

Coffee actually is an effective medication for my depression. It has similar effects to buproprion on me (which is a amphetamine replacement class drug, though not an amphetamine itself), but to a lesser degree. This is good, because bupropion causes me to have tachycardia and hypomania. This is independent to any addiction, since I've gone years without having any. That there are tolerance levels to it, like any drug, doesn't mean it's not an effective self medication for some folks. And that correlation has been proven in scientific studies.

roguetrick,

Funnily enough, you'd need to drink some pretty strong bleach for it too cause anything more than an upset stomach. Bleach isn't that harmful.

Utopian sci fi is popular in literature, but rarely in movies or shows. We'll get a series about the Culture one of these days though. Special Circumstances can get up to things that puts turning into a lizard and raising babies with your captain to shame.

Edit: I also think some more of Kim Stanley Robinson's books will get turned into series someday. They're generally about the progress to a Utopia. Years of Rice and Salt is particularly interesting because it tracks that progress all the way from the dark ages to a Utopia while the characters keep reincarnating and making the same exact mistakes over and over.

roguetrick,

Babylon 5 was almost a Manichaeist religious allegory. Of course so was DS9.

roguetrick,

I just noticed he said I robot was dystopian. Asimov was absolutely Utopian and so were the stories in that book. I wouldn't call the movie a faithful adaptation.

Trump Tells Right-Wing Christians They Will Have Power at 'Level You've Never Used Before' (www.commondreams.org)

Just ahead of his headline spot at the CPAC convention in Virginia and the South Carolina primary on Saturday, Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump delivered a speech to right-wing broadcasters Thursday night in which the former president vowed to hand power over to the Christian nationalist movement on an...

roguetrick,

WHAT? 9000?!?! There's no way that can be right.

roguetrick,

Most of it sounded like a love poem to themselves. I was terribly unimpressed.

roguetrick,

I think this is a popular opinion in toomirlformeirl, so downvoted.
