Hang on, a $500k vacation?!

What the absolute fuck can one do that makes a vacation worth $500k? Lick the Mona Lisa? Bungie jump inside St. Peter’s?

In Bali?! Seriously, what? Assume 2 weeks, how could you burn through $500k, have no new possessions at the end of it, at any age over 50? Really, I’m all ears.

Climate solution: Massachusetts town experiments with and cooling

"The neighborhood will be part of a pilot solution that connects 37 homes and businesses with a highly-efficient, underground heating and cooling system.

Other networked geothermal projects exist in the U.S., including the Texas community of Whisper Valley and Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Eversource says this is the first utility-led installation in the U.S."

I lived in a district heating project. My heating and cooling bills were only for the electricity to run the central blower in our apartment. The heating/cooling energy was part of the rent. And it was competitive.

There are 2 data centers in that district, and some manufacturing, in addition to 3 apartment complexes and a big “multi-use” complex that’s now almost completely a healthcare facility. Just humming along since the 70’s.

I got home around 1 am after last night's performance and saw that someone had put a desk/table with nice metal legs and an oak top out on the street.

I've been needing a new desk, so I dragged it home.

I went out and looked at it this morning and the top is not oak. It is bamboo. It's bamboo stamped with a fake oak wood grain pattern. lol. I'll still use it though.

Often people mention the "pocket people" who live in their phones, or greet "the people who live in my phone" and as one of those people...

I kind of like that idea. It's weird, I know, but it's kind of funny to me imagining that there exists a tiny world a bit like that Emoji movie, in which little digital versions of us exist.

Are they partial or almost complete mimics? Do they realize they are digital ghosts? Would these tiny little versions of ourselves be playing the roles we present to the world, or living authentically? I want to read the story of these worlds...

Finally other people started noticing.

"Each decade in the 20th century eventually developed a defined identity. And usually, a 20-year buffer provided a lens through which we gained perspective on the period. That was reflected on TV—Happy Days, The Wonder Years, and That '70s Show all debuted 20 years after the decade they depicted. You could have a '70s theme party in the '90s because life was drastically, hilariously different. That's no longer true."

Atlassian is so bad at UX that it boggles the mind that they're still in business. Jira is a monster that requires infinite patience to try to wrangle into submission. I hate every moment I spend in that tool.

Benhm3,
@Benhm3@mastodon.social avatar

Oh dear god I’m so glad to hear someone else say this.

It blows my mind that Jira’s childlike 3 tier hierarchy is sold and believed to be a serious system-of-record.

I find all their products to be the “shoebox version of record keeping.”

Benhm3,
@Benhm3@mastodon.social avatar

@veronica

I hate to say ServiceNow is “better” than everything Atlassian has ever made…

Its UX is not for the faint of heart. Nor are the prices. But it is a serious ITSM product that has modules for damned near everything.

The trick is to NOT “leave it to the users” and train train train.
