If you are a white leftist and you talk “both parties are the same they are both capitalist” you will loose most of your black audience. I think it ought to be obvious that this isn’t because blackfolks love Democrats (in most cases, there is always someone being simple in any group) —no. it’s because the difference between the parties is material and obvious and these are unstable times.

When I hear such talk I wonder if the speaker is working on voter suppression.

@futurebird I had a moment that I both enjoyed and hated when I asked my “both sides are the same” cousin how that new Supreme Court was working out for them.

I'm gonna try to clear up a few things

Meta is not gonna buy Mastodon or any server, this is based on absolutely nothing and untrue.

Yes, some of us indeed got contacted by Meta/Insta because they are working on a new social platform (this was in the news) and they are looking into joining the Fediverse (Mark Zuckerberg also told this in the recent podcast)

SO.

This contact was about a "heads-up" for a potential big platform to join the network and not for a "take over".

@stux apparently not being able to monetize, supervise, and advertise, is making them sad.

IDK why this is burning a hole in my brain right now but I gotta get it out...

Unisex bathrooms do NOT exist so that trans and non-binary people have a place to pee. They exist so that people with public bathroom anxiety have a place to pee. This is important for two reasons:

  1. They're not just for trans people. They're also for people with social anxiety, parents with small children of the opposite gender, disabled or elderly people who need help from a caretaker, and basically anyone else who wants a bit of extra privacy. Having them available is good for EVERYBODY.
  2. Trans people can pee wherever the fuck they want. If they're still early and not out and want to use the AGAB bathroom to avoid suspicion, that's fine. If they want to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity, that's fine. If they're more comfortable in the single-user unisex bathrooms, they're welcome to use it but are NOT required to.

If you're so scared of a peeing trans person that you don't want to be in the same room with them, then YOU can use the unisex restroom.

CatDragon,
@CatDragon@mastodon.world avatar

@faithisleaping I’ve been happy to see more restaurants moving away from his/hers into “look there are two rest rooms, they both have changing stations and handicapped access, wash your hands after you go and for gods sake don’t tie them up for 20 minutes fussing with your hair”.

@alfredo_liberal this is why she should have endorsed a candidate and bowed out of the last election. There comes a time when the right thing to do is to step down . As much as I adored Ruth Ginsberg had she retired when Obama was still in office the SCOTUS would be very different today.

If you see "parental rights" or "parents' rights" in the context of the autonomy and medical and social welfare of a child within the federal jurisdiction of Canada, it may interest you to note that that concept is fairly antithetical to the established legal approach (as imperfect as it often is). According to practice here — as far as I understand it, based on conversations with lawyers and social workers — the welfare of the child comes first and foremost, and the concept of parental rights is not really a thing, but in the eyes of the courts and the law should be framed rather as parental responsibility. Parents don't have the right to do whatever they want with their children. Parents have the responsibility to the welfare and wellbeing of their children.

"Parents rights" is a gender critical, queerphobic, and ableist dogwhistle. Be on guard when you see it.

CatDragon,
@CatDragon@mastodon.world avatar

@gersande it’s a buzzword people who should never be allowed to have anything to do with children use.
I’m an advocate for parental responsibility and the first and foremost responsibility a parent has is to keep their children safe and to make certain they know they are safe.

@futurebird @StillIRise1963 what they want is a permanent underclass of intentionally uneducated workers. That underclass will remain in the service industry or as military enlisted personnel. They’ll be disposable, have children young and die prematurely. Debt will control their lives.
Of course THEIR children will have every opportunity handed to them on a plate so they can ensure they will be the ruling class for generations to come.

At least 5 or dead in Texas from another mass shooting

Another man with an A.R. 15 style rifle

He shot the victims execution style. Victims range from 8 to 40 years of age

Why?

Someone asked the murderer to be quiet because a baby was sleeping

So far in 2023
There have been 13,716 gun violence deaths
174 mass shootings
568 children under 18 murdered

It’s the guns.
