Dr. Gartner, pt.2: "I don’t want to say the mainstream media is covering up Trump’s cognitive disability, but they certainly aren’t covering it like the 5-alarm fire it is. They are consistently not showing the parts of Trump’s speeches & interviews where his eyes go blank, his jaw goes slack, he looks confused, & slurs words, uses non-words, can't finish a sentence, rambles, perseverates, confabulates & babbles incoherently. I write, think, and talk a lot about dementia, most recently a book with Dr. Bruce Miller of UCSF, Finding the Right Words: A Story of Literature, Grief, and the Brain (Johns Hopkins, 2021).

One more reason -- and an extremely important one at that -- NOT to change the clocks! It's so hard on people with #dementia, especially those who experience #Sundowning, and their #caregivers. November is #AlzheimersAwarenessMonth and #NationalFamilyCaregiversMonth. Let's do better by this community -- 6.7 million and counting -- that already has so many challenges.

Although I am not a neurologist, I think a lot about the #variants of #PrimaryProgressiveAphasia. I wrote a #memoir about my father's #early-onset #Alzheimer's with #neurologist, #Dr.BruceMiller of #UCSF's #MemoryAndAgingCenter. It explains where in the #brain the initial assault happens and helps us understand why people can't find the right words and/or garble them and/or repeat them. After many years, I learned that my father had the #logopenic variant.

Remembering the #Congresspeople who blocked #Biden's plan to help #caregivers. "Families & other caregivers take on an array of tasks, scheduling appts & feeding & caring for people w/#Alzheimer's or #dementia. The report said 11.5 million relatives & caregivers provided more than 18 million hours of unpaid care last year. That amounted to a full-time job for caregivers who spent an avg. of nearly 31 hours a week caring for a person w/Alzheimer's or dementia."

Congratulations to the inspiring #Dr.BruceMiller, who received the Susan Newhouse and Si Newhouse Award of Hope for his lifetime of research into #FTD (#frontotemporaldementia). His brilliance and empathy have touched so many, myself included. At the end of my memoir with Bruce, I wrote about how he was the doctor I wish my father, who had #early-onset #Alzheimer's, had known.
