Volcano Kīlauea in Hawaii is currently erupting from the Halemaʻumaʻu summit crater.
Here are a sequence of visually striking images of the eruption over the past 2 hours, starting at 4:44 a.m. HST (10:44 a.m. EDT).
The lava flow is currently confined to Halemaʻumaʻu.

@AkaSci @barrygoldman1 I am not an expert on lava flows, but I can give some interpretation. I assume you are asking about the bright lines in the Kilauea lava flow. Kilauea lava comes out at about 1200 degrees C, so it cools quickly when air reaches the top of the flow. A thin crust of cooled lava forms and becomes darker, but as the more fluid, hotter lava below continues to move, it stretches the crust and breaks it, forming irregular lines. Similar to cracks in crust of baking bread.

    Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day, has roots in a tradition established by Black-Americans in the aftermath of the Civil War. On May 1, 1865, the formerly enslaved, with profound gratitude for Union soldiers who fought and died for their emancipation, began commemorating that sacrifice by decorating Union graves. This remembrance and gratitude eventually gained support from communities across America.

    mastodon.social was on the T0 list (as a Silence) for an hour.

    So you know how I said no one is protected from appearing on the list?

    80% of the council silenced mastodon.social during its spam attack and it went to the T0 list.

    No sites get special consideration or protection from appearing on the list.

    I've temporarily added that special protection for mastodon.social and mastodon.online.

    Edit: General consensus as a result of this announcement: No one should receive special protection, not even m.s.

    So I've removed them from the allowlist. There's a strong argument to be made that those who receive syndicated blocks benefit from the auto-silence hitting their instances, as it prevented a spam attack while they were AFK, which is exactly the purpose of tying inclusion to a point-in-time status of blocks.

    @mcmullin @mekkaokereke I grew up in Arlington, which is only 6 miles from Boston, not an outer suburb. In the 1960’s and 1970’s when I lived there, I never saw a single Black person in Arlington or the neighboring cities and towns. I see on Wikipedia that in 2010 Arlington is still only 2.3% Black. I did not hear people explicitly saying racist things, but that level of segregation is not random variation.

    Legit question:

    To Rupert Murdoch, what political issues matter? I’ve always assumed that the super wealthy are primarily concerned with preserving their wealth and power. They oppose progressive taxation, social programs, democracy (which can enable both) — but do these guys have other agendas? Is Rupert sincerely sad about increasing diversity, women having rights, self determination? Or are regressive social politics the sugar to make that “no popular economic control” medicine go down?

    EricFielding,
    @EricFielding@mastodon.social avatar

    @futurebird I don’t know what the Murdoch family wants other than to maintain their wealth. One interesting aspect is that the right-wing often blames the successes of progressive politics on George Soros, another billionaire. They think Soros is the hidden control of the Democratic Party in USA and he wants to destroy the White hierarchy to get richer from the instability. Murdoch is the opposite keeping the stable hierarchy.

    Been making fun today of the $8 blue check shenanigans, but the serious side is becoming very clear. For show business, sports and media celebrities, journalists, writers, artists, politicians and influencers, social media is instrumental to making their living. And like it or not, Twitter right now is the only game in town. By threatening their livelihoods Elon is extorting these people, and he will be successful unless and until a viable social media alternative exists.
