If you want to build a simple desktop application with a GUI, is tkinter the standard weapon of choice?

(This is for classroom use, so simplicity of the code is more important than it being fast, powerful, or bulletproof.)

peterdrake,
@peterdrake@qoto.org avatar

@bmaxv The final project for the class is a (single-player against an AI opponent) Scrabble game. I'd want the simplest thing that can support that. Basically just drawing colored shapes and text on the screen and recognizing mouse clicks and keypresses.

In , I can define a class Fraction to represent a rational number. I can then create one with Fraction(2, 3).

Is there a way to overload a construction operator so I can say something like 2 ./. 3 instead?

My Ubuntu installation of Discord is borked.

snap refresh discord

gives:

snap "discord" has no updates available

but when I try to launch it, it gets caught in an update failed, retrying loop.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it.

Any ideas?

I don't understand how some of these people survive everyday life.

Do you really not understand how a checkout counter works, middle-aged-white-lady? Why are you putting your card in the reader before the cashier has even rung up all your items? Why are you taking your soda off the belt? Why, when you realize you didn't pay for your soda, did you then pay for it in cash and wait for your change? Have you literally never bought anything before, or are you incapable of considering how your actions might affect others, or are you incapable of thinking more than three seconds ahead of the current moment?

How do these people survive everyday life if they can't even manage basic social awareness in one of the most common retail settings on the planet?

peterdrake,
@peterdrake@qoto.org avatar

@LouisIngenthron At the store where we shop, you CAN use your card before everything is rung up. It actually speeds things up.

What is the thing(s) that attracts you to a person romantically or otherwise?

peterdrake,
@peterdrake@qoto.org avatar

@RickiTarr I think there should be a podcast where, every episode, the panel discusses some attractive trait submitted by a listener and decides whether it's considered so because of (a) evolutionary psychology, (b) the patriarchy, or (c) nobody else thinks that's sexy, ya big perv.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think the sound mixing in Chris Nolan movies is terrible. He tries so hard to make it grandiose with thumping base tones that half the time I can't understand what anyone is saying.

peterdrake,
@peterdrake@qoto.org avatar

@LouisIngenthron I thought I read an interview where he said he optimized his sound for theaters with top-of-the-line sound systems, everyone else be damned.

The Last Parsec: Eris Beta-V adventure at one point has something called "The Quincunx", comprising five objects. There's a picture of it on the map.

Are the objects arranged in a quincunx? No, they are not.

@taylorlorenz "politicians who allege corruption by their opponents may themselves be perceived as dishonest" ... but in the GOP's case, we have receipts. Over and over, they're caught doing what they accuse Democrats of. I'm now convinced that the pee tape doesn't exist, because if it did, Trump would be accusing Biden of having one.

Police in Brussels have started using bait bikes, which are GPS tracked bikes that when stolen lead the police to the criminals.

I look forward to the evaluation of this project, as so many cities are plagued by bike theft. Could this be the remedy?

To update you and eveyone interested. We have 4 out of 5 of the versions tested on beta. The last one is where we expect some problems. If so we will apply 4 out of 5 and work on the 5th. Otherwise we might have all 5 updates applied to production soon. The first 4 succeeded which is a nice first step!
