Many people don't care to vote in European elections, because they think, it doesn't matter, but this is far from true.

European laws, be it on environmental or social standards, consumer protections, privacy and more affect every person in the (and to a degree: beyond) and the parliament, our directly elected representatives, plays a central role in the institutional process.

Please go and vote! Fascists and "fascists with some manners" (conservatives) will!

This is bullshit, because:

  1. You need a TFR (total fertility rate) of 2.1 to maintain stable population (no growth, no shrinkage).

  2. UK's TFR is 1.75, so shrinking ~15% per generation.

  3. Which means, not enough workers to support the retirees.

  4. Net-positive immigration is the only thing propping our economy up.

5.The UK NEEDS immigrants, or we're fucked.

This is the truth, unpalatable to racists molly-coddled by generations of crooked right-wing politicians.

Sometimes, I think we need to stop blaming just Capitalism, and get more personal. Lots of countries use a Capitalistic system, but still manage to pay workers fair wages, provide free/inexpensive Healthcare, have paid maternity/paternity leave, longer paid vacation, shorter work weeks, ect. We use the word Capitalism like Christians use The Devil, but it's not some dark mysterious force, it is people who are choosing to treat other people like actual garbage, it is people who are making laws, people who are denying rights. The derision with which we speak the name of Elon Musk or Donald Trump, should be universal for rich fuckers who choose profits over people. They shouldn't get to hide behind, Oh, that's just late stage Capitalism. It's a choice for them, and it's a choice for the lobbyists who promote them, and it's a choice for the politicians who put those laws into action.

The verdict may not matter to Trump's base, but I do think there is a group of people it matters to who are being overlooked: the people who were already likely to vote for Biden.

A Trump acquittal would have sapped trust in legal systems and government further. It would fueled apathy. Hopelessness and apathy can reelect Trump.

skip_lacaze,

@futurebird @YusufToropov Biden’s one failure related to all this was refusing to let more witnesses testify in support of Anita Hill. Clarence Thomas was a lascivious pervert who purposely failed in his duty to administer the Office of Civil Rights and who perjured himself at his confirmation hearings in 1991. He should not have been allowed on the Supreme Court.

At some point, it became Democratic orthodoxy that we must never judge candidates or expect better from them because every election is the most important election in history, a continual crisis where we have to pragmatically make tough choices in order to avoid an even worse outcome.

And fine, okay, but the crisis never ends, does it? The people who run on stopping the greater evil never do, nothing is done about it, our options get worse, and it feels like we're being taken advantage of.

Billionaires set the world on fire, and they keep fanning the flames.

Just about every single problem on Earth right now exists because billionaires are profiting from it.

Israel. Trump. Global heating. Facism. Forever chemicals. Covid.

Scratch any problem we face as a society, and there's a billionaire beneath it.

We should probably start asking ourselves, how much longer are we going to tolerate them?

By the way, if you live in NY, let your profoundly dumb piece of shit mayor and your possibly much better councilperson know you saw the two NYPD cops in the ABC helicopter shot give heartfelt solidarity-handshakes to Trump, a 34-count felon, as he skulked back into Trump Tower because the NYPD is populated by a healthy plurality, if not majority, of fascist dicks who think an inveterate, unreconstructed would-be dictator should transcend the law they took an oath to uphold because he is exactly as racist and authoritarian as they are.

The United States may have never held a presidential election in which the voting public was so badly misinformed. We can blame biased news media, scammers on social media, foreign interference, and politicians who intentionally mislead us. But ultimately, voters must learn to separate fact from falsehood.

Will misinformation decide the 2024 presidential election? https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/4685012-misinformation-2024-presidential-election/

The person adding an LLM that tells people to put glue in their pizza and the person who adds four paragraphs to their article for PageRank reasons are not doing different things.

It’s not like one is a problem and the other not. They’re not even different kinds of problem. They are doing THE. SAME. THING.

When you distort your content for SEO purposes (or create it in the first place for SEO purposes), just like people pushing LLMs, you are destroying and/or obfuscating real information.

Lamppost EV chargers are the answer to how you charge your vehicle in cities.

This is possible because when energy intensive street lamps were replaced by LEDs, there’s excess power for charging EVs.

All cities should do this. ⚡️

One of the worst ideas Democrats ever had was that gerontocracy is good, actually on the theory that only career politicians who've been wrong their entire lives know how to get stuff done, which is so obviously a rationalization for why we have a gerontocracy in the first place.

First as tragedy, then as farce.

In 2017, when Donald Trump became president, anarchists in the Bay Area displayed a banner reading "Become Ungovernable" while shutting down San Francisco International Airport in protest of the Muslim Ban and a speaking event at the University of California at Berkeley featuring the infamous misogynist and Islamophobe Milo Yiannopoulos.

This week, the Libertarian Party displayed the same phrase (with the "a" circled, no less!) while hosting Donald Trump himself. The Libertarian Party represents the opposite of anarchism: they only endorse the kind of freedom that money can buy, whereas for us, real freedom is beyond price.

Our enemies have no ideas of their own, no vision, nothing to offer. All they have is what they dishonestly steal from us. We must, indeed, become ungovernable. 🏴🏴🏴

What if, and hear me out here, the public simply don't agree that commercialising access to sensitive health data is a reasonable thing to do? What happens then?

Public engagement without power to make meaningful change over what matters is just participation washing.
