I agree with @gruber that this is a corporate pissing match, but I also understand not dedicating engineering resources (any of them) to a $3500 dev kit masked as a consumer product (it prob will be a consumer product but it won’t be at launch) at launch. Especially when the company who makes said dev kit has gone out of its way to undermine your business. Apple TV+ isn’t on the Meta Quest, for example, outside of the browser. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-01-17/watching-netflix-on-apple-vision-pro-you-ll-have-to-use-the-web

jamonbull,
@jamonbull@mastodon.social avatar

@chockenberry @film_girl Couldn’t agree more. Apple are constantly saying they want to make the Mac a real option for gamers, but Blizzard for example never released Diablo IV for macOS, after a long history of supporting the platform. Bridges have definitely been burned. These are the reasons Tim Cook will leave behind a mixed legacy.

Apple pitching Vision Pro as a 'spatial computer’ from the outset is setting it up to run head first into the ‘iPad is not a real computer' arguments for the next decade, except this time it costs 7x the original iPad.

I already see people on Reddit thinking the device is as powerful as a multi-screen Mac, and they're going to be quite upset when they realize it’s an iPad with a very limited app selection 👀

Apple is going to have to work damn hard to make it live up to 'spatial computer’

jamonbull, (edited )
@jamonbull@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Absolutely this. And there are folks who keep hyping it as this powerful gaming platform. It only has an M2! Mac laptops get very hot when you push them with AAA games. I wonder if this thing will feel hot and uncomfortable on your face if it’s pushed with an intensive game.

@ivory Is the idea that when federates, I should be able to log in with a threads.net username through Ivory? I’m using the Threads app at the moment but it’s horrific. Can’t deal with the For You feed, spam, and lack of overall app functionality.

jamonbull,
@jamonbull@mastodon.social avatar

@ivory Oh! I was getting my hopes up for no reason then. I assumed that threads.net federating would also mean they were becoming Mastodon instance. This is now way less exciting than I thought it would be haha, especially if I can only follow Threads users from my Mastodon account if they ‘opt in’.

My wife is looking forward to deleting her Instagram account once she can connect with the same folks from her Mastodon account. Being able to remain in touch with over 100M people who still use Meta products out of the comfort of an ad-free, privacy-friendly platform like Mastodon is a game changer.

jamonbull,
@jamonbull@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron Sounds great, but @mosseri has recently said Threads is working towards its users having to opt in to Fediverse visibility. To me this is a total non-starter. 99% of users are not going to do that, especially if it’s a switch hidden somewhere in the settings menu.

I was wondering why I can’t follow people from Threads on Mastodon and found out it’s because the server I’m on has blocked interoperability with Threads.

Wow, so what are my options here? Nag the admins? Switch my account to a different server? What do I lose if I do that? Which one do I switch to? 🤔

https://www.threads.net/@thatadamguy/post/C02Bv7LPmET/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

jamonbull,
@jamonbull@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron @carnage4life Don't you think this will be a common thing? I wonder if Meta sees the Fediverse as a potential future threat. They tend to quash threats early. E.g. Instagram & WhatsApp. They know it’ll be difficult to get Mastodon users to switch, so their plan is ‘interoperability’, AKA make 95% of the Fediverse Threads profiles. I predict they'll stop short of allowing algorithmic visibility for Mastodon posts, thus enticing a sufficient number to switch, and slowing Fediverse growth.
