So, uh, my trips-around-the-sun odometer is ticking up to thirty-something over this weekend.

If ever you've received good information from me, or felt better after one of our chats, or are a more distant connection but grateful for the work I do in FOSS or local politics, today's a good day to pay it forward:

Donate $30+ to help make happen!

We need to raise another $4,300 by October 13th: https://petalumapride.link/donate

Ah, yes. The FOSS event with no Health & Safety practices has been scheduled immediately after a superspreader event, again.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

If your event has a Code of Conduct but no Health & Safety policy, you're missing the point of Codes of Conduct.

Happy bi visibility day! Yes, I am married to a beautiful man who I love. But I'm . Not gay.

Same as we shouldn't assume a person's gender by how they look, we shouldn't assume a person's orientation by who their partner is.

Palm Springs is going to install an AIDS Memorial Sculpture.

Which is lovely.

But the artist (a straight guy) probably should have consulted a queer man at some point... Apparently it's kicking up quite a storm among the local queer community since it was unveiled :blobcatsleepless:

I've been raising issues with the phrases "non-code contributor" or "non-technical contributor" for at least a couple of years now.

And yet to this day I continue to see people of good will giving presentations and writing blog posts using that framing.

When will we learn that defining people by what they are not* is not a valid pathway to inclusion?

(* caveat because "non-technical contributors" are absolutely technical. It's a BS phrase.)

We're over halfway to our weekly goal! We're trying to raise $1,000 a week until comes up, the weekend of October 13-15.

This is only our 2nd annual event, so we don't exactly have a runway or nest egg to trade on! That is to say: every dollar counts.

Whether or not you're a local, you've seen the news. You know how important Pride is in today's environment. Help us make our community safer and more inclusive: https://petalumapride.link/donate

Current COVID surge has surpassed last winter's, and the pattern is playing out across the US.

Get your boosters. Wear a mask. Pay attention to indoor air quality. Please take care of yourself and each other.

And remember case counts are bunk, as tracing and reporting infrastructure has been dismantled. Wastewater is the best measure we've got left.

@kingbeauregard Apologies, you're right -- I explored more and did see they have a few additional indicators in play there.

That said, hospital admissions are up and positivity rate is way up. Both, again, lagging indicators – and neither include all the people who test at home and never report, nor the wide drop in testing period.

Let's be clear tho, even in lagging indicators we're talking about a significant rise. See the third screenshot here, from CDC itself.

A cropped screenshot of a chart showing COVID test positivity rate in California, showing a large spike in winter, a trough in May and June, and a steep rise beginning in July.
A screenshot from the CDC's website showing that, nationally over the last week, hospitalizations are up 14.3% and deaths are up 8.3%.

How to move your Instagram feed to Pixelfed, the photo app that doesn't track your every move by @jhpot for WIRED: https://www.wired.com/story/migrate-move-instagram-to-pixelfed-no-tracking-fediverse/

@pixelfed gets better week by week, and as an open source project it's responsive to community feedback.

It has many of the features of Instagram, but allows me to turn off features I don't care for (like reels) and, critically, doesn't erode my privacy or push ads.

Also: it has an Instagram importer. Give it a try!

Great write up by Stephen O'Grady: Why Open Source Matters.

Astute observation that most of the time those who want to change the definition, or argue it doesn't matter, come from companies behind single vendor projects and are likely the same folks who are trying to sell you something 👀

All the teachers' strikes, the healthcare workers, the baristas, now screenwriters and actors, while drivers are bargaining with UPS under threat of strike, and unions emerge at my local bookstore, among local journalists, and now animators: https://gizmodo.com/cartoon-network-warner-bros-animation-union-nlrb-labor-1850661970

Let's keep this rolling!

Labor is the strongest check we've got against the capital class, and can help us shift power dynamics toward outcomes on climate, healthcare, housing, and more.

My brother Scott would've been 45 today. Last year on his birthday we hosted his Celebration of Life.

He died of complications from COVID, even though we all thought he was in reasonably good health.

COVID isn't any less dangerous today than it was then.

Please do take good care.

If you're at I hope you'll join me at 3pm in the DEI track (room E147) for my talk:

Con flu, con crud, and COVID-19: the time for policies is yesterday

It's been difficult to prepare for. It's emotional subject matter as someone who has lost a brother to COVID-19, and still has a lot to lose. But it's so important. We need to do better as community and event organizers.

If our events have a Code of Conduct but not a Health and Safety policy, we've missed the point.

Celebrating @outreachy this morning for having now provided more than 1,000 paid open source internships for underrepresented people 🥳

Grateful to @gnome and @conservancy for their role in backing this important program, and to @sphakos, @karen, and @anna for their work driving it, and to Marina Zhurakhinskaya for the legacy she has left by founding it ❤️ #FOSSY

A rare shout out to Google from the stage at #FOSSY, for having supported @outreachy from the very beginning and never stopping.

For all the companies who are fair weather friends, the team behind Google Summer of Code remain steadfast supporters.

It was an honor to be a PgM for #GSoC for a few years and come to understand the scope of the impact that team has made in FOSS. Special shout out from me to Cat Allman and Stephanie Taylor for all their work behind the scenes 💖#OpenSource

I've learned that tomorrow at 1pm there'll be a protest against the one homophobic and transphobic event being held at the OCC (there are two other events at the OCC this week, including the fabulous ).

I'm not sure exactly how I plan to show up amid all my other responsibilities tomorrow, but I'll be there at least briefly to stand in solidarity.
