It’s so difficult (and expensive) to run a server for my own domain. Is it worth it?

I started out wanting to support Matrix, and I've set up a number of channels for my community on Matrix, but everything happens on Discord and IRC right now, and we have a bridge between Discord and IRC, but we can't bridge to Matrix at the moment, so is it even worth it to keep maintaining a separate Matrix presence?

If not, I’m just gonna shut it down. I don’t want to spend the money.

josh,
@josh@josh.tel avatar

@austin @ramsey +1 for the t2bot.io bridges, and looking at a server other than Synapse.

... And while it's not a useful right now, a little bird told me there's a commercially-backed fork of Conduit (which is written in Rust) that may be donated to the Foundation later this year.

All that said, it may make sense to maintain a presence on Matrix (esp if you bridge) even if it doesn't make sense to run your own homeserver.

The organizers of @pycon have given community organizers a massive gift 🎁

Let's not squander it!

A sold out #PyConUS 2024 proved that even large events can prioritize safety and inclusion for caregivers and immunocompromised people by way of requiring masks, and gathering venue data to calibrate their policy from year-to-year. Smaller events have proven it's possible at that scale, too.

Now is the time for at least one other large event to step up.

Who will it be? 👀

mom had another stroke. a nurse put her on the phone after getting settled in PCU; she still remembers me but her mind is not working as intended as she struggles to get words out that make sense. this has been the slowest train to hell. watching her life chip away over a six year period.

You know who will never mine your private communications to train an LLM?

Better yet, you know whose words you don't need to trust, because you aren't obligated to use any particular server? And the software is open source? And regularly audited by security researchers?

Matrix.

It's not perfect, but no tool is. It's a matter of what trade offs you're willing to accept. Just sayin' ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@inquiline here's hoping! As I've been reading more about it I'm learning it's no wonder it has been struggling -- I also needed it in a better draining pot, and to water it differently than I do the ficus lyrata! Whoops 😅

Two cuttings now in my plant rehab zone 🤞🏻

Does your public library use Overdrive/Libby for ebooks or audiobooks? ⚠️

In the US and Canada, the answer is probably yes. And you should speak to your library staff and commission about it.

Libby is now owned by a private equity firm & making sketchy changes: https://buttondown.email/ninelives/archive/the-coming-enshittification-of-public-libraries/

The latest development is that their overbroad privacy policy allows them to sell your borrowing history to advertisers: https://infosec.exchange/@longobord/112243098104196246

    Thank you @karawynn and @longobord!

It has never been more important to include attribution or cite our sources.

Not just the right thing to do, it also helps with information and media literacy at a time when convincing bullshit is easier than ever to produce.

Hoo boy. I'm not naming names because I don't want to fan the flames, but the knives are out:

Events around have rightly emboldened volunteer-driven open source projects to take their hyper-wealthy downstream users to task.

Wild to think that many large companies have hollowed out their open source program offices (OSPOs), the internal teams who have been working on addressing these resource issues.

I fear this will get worse before it gets better.

Addressing indoor air quality saves lives and helps us achieve at work, in school, and in self-governance.

Brain function declines by 15% as CO2 levels hit 945ppm, and by 50% at 1400ppm.

Have you ever measured CO2 at your desk or a contentious City Council meeting? What you find might surprise you!

These scientists recommend mandating clean air in public buildings, with 800ppm as the upper limit. That's good policy: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adl0677

2024 is the biggest election year in human history, as people in at least 64 countries head to the polls ‼️

It has never been more important to create more space between what we read and how we react. Let's breathe deeply and endeavor to shed light, not heat, so that we can make well informed decisions all around the globe.

Today is . According to the CDC, ~7% of Americans have experienced long COVID – that's ~17.6 million people. There are more people in the US with long COVID than there are with red hair.

However, many event organizers think there are so few people impacted that they don't need to implement Health & Safety measures.

If you consider the cycle of inaccessibility, you have to wonder... how much of that is self-fulfilling prophecy?

It saddens me that another health issue within my family gives me cause to remind folks:

COVID is a serious vascular disease. It just so happens that it's transmitted by our respiratory system.

Please be safe and take care of each other.

Whoa! TIL just how widespread Matrix is at universities in Germany.

This, on top of adoption by their national healthcare system and other corners of their public sector.

BTW, did you know that you can rent out the SFO Museum?

It's beautiful, spacious, and extremely accessible – you can get there by plane, bus, shuttle, car, BART, etc. SFO Museum is also cheaper and more reasonable to work with than most wedding venues, as it turns out 😂

    josh,
    @josh@josh.tel avatar

@eleland Thank you! At first I was hoping for an air hanger, but those ended up being either impractical or out of reach 😅 We were delighted with SFO Museum. Coming up on 6 years now! (Wow time flies.)

@deepbluev7 and to be clear, when I say doomerism I'm not including folks who speak about how scary things are and how suboptimal things are. We need to hold space for sharing analysis and our feelings.

I'm very specifically referring to the "the US is fucked no matter what" takes and all its variants. Those belong in private conversations with a close friend or therapist.

It never fails to amaze me how widespread is, while it flies under the radar.

It's not only for projects, though its users do include Mozilla, Eclipse, Ubuntu, GNOME, Fedora, KDE, openSUSE, FSFE, W3C, et al!

There's massive adoption in the European public sector, where there's an appreciation of open source, open standards, and digital sovereignty – most notably in Germany.

@element put together a great landing page showcasing Matrix adoption in Germany: https://element.io/matrix-in-germany

    josh,
    @josh@josh.tel avatar

@WerySkok Yeah, that is @element's primary market these days, alas. Beeper is the biggest consumer-facing service provider that uses Matrix these days.

More to the point though, I'd also like to see more information put together for personal users, in particular those of us who want to stick to the FOSS clients! Maybe that's something we at the Foundation can help with at some point.

    josh,

@sigmavirus24 I find Element to be fairly feature complete, tho the velocity has slowed in the mobile apps as they've shifted focus to Element X, their next gen client.

The web and desktop clients are ace tho, especially with all the labs/experimental stuff that's available.
