May the seeds we planted in 2023 grow and crack the foundations of all that does not serve us in 2024.

Happy new year, my friends 🌱

My job is to work toward bringing secure, decentralized, open source licensed communication tools with open governance to the masses with Matrix.

But if folks prefer XMPP or IRC, that's still a win in my book. I think Signal is a step in the right direction, too!

It's open vs. the world, and I'm looking forward to working together to challenge the status quo of surveillance capitalism and proprietary, centralized walled gardens.

Been a #Matrix user since 2017, and a heavy user since 2022.

Finally beginning to realize the full promise of it – and it is a thing of beauty 🤩

    "Ask a person, not a search engine" was the motto of a local community I cofounded back in 2011.

    These days the motto seems awfully prescient 😅

    Even if you think I'm overly COVID cautious and disagree with much of what I say... please, please, at least for your own sake:

    If you get COVID, DO NOT PUSH THROUGH IT. Even after you start testing negative.

    Seriously, learn from people with ME/CFS.

    Pushing through is how you increase your already quite-high odds of having long lasting or permanent damage.

    Thank you all for the great suggestions! The regular maintenance suggested in the docs was only getting me ~14% back each week, and week over week was leaving something behind.

    I still have 4 more cleanup commands to run, but already I've reclaimed ~33% of my disk space 👏🏻

    Argh, putting completely aside the “owned by Amazon” problem, Goodreads these days is just miserable software—slow, clunky UX, just ate a book review.

    So… is shaping up? Are there other alternatives? Ideally needs “would like to read” that is fast and easy to add to, and sharing out of reviews. Bonus for “read X books a year” goal.

    josh,
    @josh@josh.tel avatar

    @luis_in_brief BookWyrm is definitely improving, it's ~recently added support for hashtags and a "stopped reading" shelf to complement the existing "to read," "currently reading," and "read" shelves and the ability to create arbitrary new shelves.

    Development velocity doesn't match Mastodon or Pixelfed, but chugging along nonetheless 🚀

    Stop treating open source projects and foundations like consumer-facing businesses.

    Unless you've got a paid support contract that's being neglected, or there's a grave concern, it's inappropriate to escalate issues to massively public forums.

    Maintainers and the staffers and volunteers at foundations are already overworked.

    Don't make it harder for them to address your issue by ALSO making them waste time firefighting in public.

    @danlyke RIGHT?! I imagine the CO2 levels in those chambers, on nights like that, are significantly worse than what I observed at GPAC last night.

    And heaven forbid somebody attends who hadn't already made up their mind, and arrives at a nonsensical position while impaired, only to later succumb to the tendency to invent post-hoc explanations for one's position...

    This feels ripe for study.

    One of these days I'm'a have to persuade someone to bring my CO2 monitor in with them.

    josh, to random
    @josh@josh.tel avatar

    Brought my CO2 monitor to tonight's in-person General Plan Advisory Committee meeting, where we tackle extremely multidisciplinary work planning for the next 25 years.

    Noting that the 2015 study by Joseph Allen showed a 15% cognitive decline at ~945ppm and 50% decline at ~1400ppm, I had to offer some feedback to the city staff that we were not set up for success (not to mention COVID safety). Next time I suspect we'll have the HVAC turned on 😅

    Citation: https://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/doi/10.1289/ehp.1510037

    A chart showing the CO2 levels were at 1747ppm at 9:40pm when the meeting ended. CO2 levels had crossed 1000ppm shortly after the meeting started, and were above 1400ppm for the last hour and 40 minutes of the meeting.

    Does anyone have an opinion about the current race for a Sonoma County judge position? I've got someone I respect asking for an endorsement of a candidate, and aside from the usual "wait, you think my opinion would be taken positively in the wider community?" incredulity, I don't know that I'm tuned into the broader issues.

    Aside from being extremely skeptical of anything our Sheriff's department says.

    josh,
    @josh@josh.tel avatar

    @danlyke Thank you! I am definitely looking forward to learning more... quite a list of endorsers. Some I respect, and then also there's the Sheriff and SCLEA which really gives me pause 👀

    But it is a tragedy when someone is forced out.

    I've watched as Eben Moglen and SFLC have abused the legal system and attacked SFC, wasting the scarce resources of one of FOSS's most important charitable nonprofits, and am devastated to learn about the personal abuse Bradley has endured.

    may not mandate masking, but they've been thoughtful about ventilation and vaccines ... and then there's this!

    I feel good about one way masking as a high risk person given all the other work they've put in.

    Of note, when GitHub Universe did the rug pull on COVID precautions last year, it was Monktoberfest's written promise to not relax protections after they're announced that inspired a key part of the @phpledge.

    "It’s only after they spend years being told they’re “non-code contributors” by a culture of code supremacy that they identify their work as “non-code,” but even then it’s only how they identify it within the problematic culture. No one tells their friends outside of open source that they’re “non-code contributors,” they say they help with interface design."

    TIL I was anonymously and selectively quoted, and thereby misrepresented, in a piece written for @opensourcenet.

    Look if you identify as a "non-code contributor," that's what I'll call you. My guiding principles: consent and the right to self-identify and self-determine.

    But defending the continued use of a label that identifies other people by what they are not is a missed opportunity to build better communities.
