Why is Methane Seeping on Mars?

The most surprising revelation from NASA’s Curiosity Mars Rover — that methane is seeping from the surface of Gale Crater — has scientists scratching their heads.

So, you know how JWST took an image of the Crab Nebula recently … well, that data is already available!

Downloaded last night and have processed them today.

Here’s my version of the inside of the Crab Nebula, powered by the mighty pulsar in the centre!

If we look carefully near the centre, we can see these horizontal plane rings - that’s caused by the pulsar’s magnetosphere and rotation. It dumps A LOT of energy into the surrounding nebula.

📸 NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, T. Temim

Zoomed in version of the above image showing the central rings around the pulsar.

Space Weather ALERT: A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) has just impacted Earth causing a G2 Geomagnetic Storm. So far, there have been no radio contact reports. Visible aurora is being reported across the UK now! A strongly southward "Bz" (the magnetic component of the CME) is required to produce strong auroras.

Magnetometer "stackplot" (Finnish Line). Strong magnetometer deviations at the the DOB station and below indicate possible mid-latitude activity.

Discovery alert!

A spherical shell-like structure 1 billion light-years in diameter named Ho’oleilana is discovered in the distribution of relatively nearby galaxies. We posit this is the 1st observation of an individual Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO).

The Hawaiian name Ho’oleilana was suggested by Ka’iu and Larry Kimura at University of Hawaii at Hilo.

It is abstracted from the Kumulipo creation chant: “Ho’oleilei ka lana a ka Po uliuli” (From deep darkness came murmurs of awakening).

i tooted out yesterday an off-hand comment about how i was enjoying because they actually have to deal with things like g-forces (quite realistic compared to my usual -style ), and it spawned a two-day long multi-branch conversation between at least a dozen people including (but not limited to) Bussard ramjets, fusion reactors, socio-economic analyses of science fiction politics, the list goes on.

the is pretty great.

we are house-sitting for the in-laws, and they have amazon prime logged in on their TV. finally trying out ! watched ep1 last night and excited to get through more of it this weekend.

i might be able to get the account password from mother-in-law, but i really don’t want to get my own subscription or support amazon in general… is there another way to watch without uh, sailing the seven seas?

mishamouse,
@mishamouse@hachyderm.io avatar

watched the first season yesterday, really loving it so far. it’s a little more grounded and realistic than most of the i’ve consumed in my life, which is a nice change of pace.

also, the linguist in me now wants to learn the Belter creole . whoops.

finished yesterday! all six seasons in about 10 days.

i really enjoyed it, and i think it’s going to leave a lasting impression on my preferences in the future. if/when i finish reading , maybe i’ll take a break from the franchise and try out the expanse books.

oh, and i think the is high on my list of favorite spaceships now.

Are you finding Mastodon to be less vibrant/active?

I’m worried that we are not getting as much engagement on our Ukraine war reporting as we used to.

We’re trying to decide which social media platforms to continue posting on, given how much effort it takes to replicate across all of them.

If you want to send a signal to us that we should keep posting here, will you sign up for our newsletter? http://Counteroffensive.substack.com

I’m only asking Mastodon users today so we can gauge impact.

No need to clear new land for solar power. Panels can coexist with agriculture, and even help it since many crops thrive in partial shade and/or benefit from water retention under the panels.

“Maize is grown by about 50% of farmers in Tanzania. Maize is also a sun loving plant. So the fact that we had an 11% yield increase in maize [under solar panel arrays] is a phenomenal result,” he said.
