The engineers who designed the probes half a century ago even thought of the possibility that a wrong sequence of commands may point the antenna dish away from earth (like someone did a couple of days ago).

And they implemented a self-adjusting mechanism that a few times a year scans the positions of a few known stars to infer the position of the earth, and point back the antenna in the right direction.

50 years later, these wonderful machines are still working, tens of billions of km away from earth, with only 69 KB of RAM, and even a wrong sequence of commands won't put them out of use, while nowadays 4 GB of RAM aren't even enough to start VsCode or IntelliJ.

The more I understand how they were designed, the more I feel like an early Medieval engineer looking at the Pantheon or other marvels or Roman architecture. Some amazing skills, knowledge and attention to details have been lost from that generation to ours.

@blacklight @dan613 @alan @cstross Most processors are ill-suited to the highly dynamic list-oriented data structures that are prevalent in semantic/conceptual AI programs (as opposed to the matrix operations common to associative AI, e.g., LLMs). Until we have reliable processor-in-memory (PIM), developers will still need to optimize memory management.

If the US government really had alien bodies, then the US president would know about it.

If the US president knew about it, then Trump would know about it.

If Trump knew about it, he would have told everyone, bragged about it, kept boxes of documents about it at Mar-A-Lago, etc. There would be a ketchup stained original photograph of an alien autopsy on the floor of his bathroom.

Since we haven't heard him brag about having seen a photo of an alien, we know that he hasn't seen one.

@mekkaokereke I’m not sure your premise is correct, that “if the US government really had alien bodies, then the US president would know about it.” I believe that the President could know about it, but only if they asked or had a need to know. Knowable? Yes. Known? Hard to say. I agree that Trump does not know for the reasons you cite. He does not know a great many things. 👽

I also have it integrated with my home automation. When my hands are full of gardening tools, I just say, “Hey Siri, open garage door”.

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has just developed a tool, called Babel X, which links social media posts to citizens' Social Security number and location data.

It's not just abuse by surveillance capitalists we must concern ourselves with. It's also governments.

This is all the more reason that people must not only examine how they use social media, but consider owning their social media presence as well.

Never has the idea of a been so important.

You should act as if you are under continuous surveillance, because you are. Here is the kicker: nobody cares about you, personally, unless you become a “person of interest” (bad idea, generally). So don’t worry too much about State surveillance. Corporations want to know you REALLY well, because, shareholder value.

If you're rolling your eyes at the number of political posts in your feed, keep in mind that we're at the tipping point of authoritarianism here in the US (and other countries). For example, a political party is deciding whether women live or die in childbirth. The stakes are high, and we'll post about it.

I try to balance my posts with politics and lighter stuff. When it's a politics-heavy day, that balance may tilt toward the political end. But I"m not going to ignore reality altogether.

@AbandonedAmerica @squeevening Walking away without fear was the right action. You definitely don’t want to trigger a prey response. However, standing your ground facing it for a minute “just looking” could have been interpreted by the bear as a challenge in certain circumstances. If that were the case you would have no time to get a “vibe.” I’ve been around bears multiple times, both black bears and grizzlies. The latter will eat you if it wants to.

    meltedcheese,

Embarrassingly, I only just realised that “allspice” is not an oft-used mix of spices, but a single plant. “The name allspice was coined as early as 1621 by the English, who valued it as a spice that combined the flavours of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.”

It is weirdly psycho coincidental (like so much is) that I happened to be thinking about allspice today. I found a recipe that calls for allspice liquor. I am now officially on safari for this ingredient.

@ubiquity75 As in “desert wallah” meaning the well-off 19th C Brit who journeyed to Morocco, is photographed in “native garb” for the sole purpose of having something to brag about in the salons upon his return? I obtained this photo (and the two edged weapons) from this man’s descendants for my collection.
