@ai6yr I've watched a few of these videos on Youtube and the amount of trash pulled from easily accessible locations is astounding! I hope this inspires more people to become citizen recycler's via magnet fishing.

Though I also wish we didn't need citizens to become voluntary waterway cleanup crew. I wish our system was built to take care of our waterways better.

"I miss the old internet, when the cruel people were contained to one or two websites I could ignore"

What internet would that be, exactly?

It certainly wasn't any internet I've been on, and I've been around since the 1990s.

This "nostalgia for the 'heyday of the internet'" almost always seems to be rooted in these rose-colored glasses about how things were.

I won't argue about whether things are better or worse overall, but this idea that the internet was somehow nicer is weird to me.

miah,
@miah@hachyderm.io avatar

@hrefna Agreed, it certainly wasn't nicer. I don't miss all the "RTFM" comments that used to be everywhere and expected if asking a question on IRC.

Embedds are over. Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, or whatever links are all basically broken by default now. People using an ad blocker (YOU SHOULD TOO) for the most part see broken bullshit:

Screenshot that shit. Link directly to the item. Fuck their "embedding guidelines" they broke the Internet, they don't get to make the rules.

A embedded twitter link in an article just shows up as a "-(@)".

@ai6yr I haven't quite made a 'no buy year' pledge, but I have made a 'buy it used' pledge that I try to live by. I will always try to buy it used and repair before buying something new.

Hmm, when did California lose it and start using plastic bags again at grocery stores? The pandemic? For awhile there I thought everyone was using (at the very least) beefier recycled plastic bags instead of throwaway plastic, but apparently someone lobbied someone so people are just buying more disposable plastic bags (at 10 cents a shot) in my neighborhood. 😢

(Nope... I do not go to the grocery store much, LOL).

Journalists posting uncritical articles about AI or simply re-posting press releases from AI companies will be the first to be replaced by it.

miah,
@miah@hachyderm.io avatar

@ai6yr Based on the content I see coming out of arstechnica, I don't think they are 100% AI yet. Though I suspect that their journalists are using AI to generate the content of their article and then editing.

miah,
@miah@hachyderm.io avatar

@ai6yr I'm seeing it a lot on 'gamer content sites'.

I think I've run into a few 5e D&D sites that follow that similar format of 'how do i ___' that felt ai generated. Basically anything easy to regurgitate.

I've definitely seen it a bunch with random video game sites. Frequently it will be 'somebody on reddit posted about x they found in y game' and the ai has turned that into a article with SEO and ads.

Why couldn't Sonos devices just support the MPD protocol.

thisismissem, to random
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

So apparently MacOS 14 isn't available for devices from 2017 — so I'd need to buy a new mac, even though mine works perfectly fine, to use this app (MacOS 13 is still well supported by Apple)

Apparently Apple considers devices “vintage" when they're between 5 and 7 years old; so hardware that works perfectly well from 2017 becomes un-upgradable in 2023/24

I can't see any information on how long Apple will continue to support MacOS Ventura (13)
https://mastodon.social/@sindresorhus/112432845781407658

miah,
@miah@hachyderm.io avatar

@thisismissem This is a big part of why I stopped supporting MacOS / Apple. Its fine for businesses where they are able to write-off hardware expenses, but not for home users who want a laptop to work for a decade (or more).

I have a very usable thinkpad from 2012 that I still use frequently. My macbook from 2007 still works even! Is it "slow" by todays standards? A little, but I can still do 80% of my work from them.

Call me old fashioned but if I was in charge of a candidate's communications I'd advise against disclosing your brain looks like a moth-eaten garment.

miah,
@miah@hachyderm.io avatar

@andrew presumably somebody was going to leak that info so they tried to get in front to control the narrative. But there is no way to positively spin brain worms when your candidate is out there being extremely unconventional and spewing garbage.

Could they have paid to suppress? I doubt it. That information is literally priceless in 2024.

Speaking of video game adaptations; I really loved the new series. They nailed the feel of the game, but also delivered some fantastic storytelling. It even made me want to play the first two Fallouts just to get a little more understanding of the show.

Gentoo Linux has taken a awesome step with a new policy that bans contributions created by AI(LLM) systems.

"It is expressly forbidden to contribute to Gentoo any content that has been created with the assistance of Natural Language Processing artificial intelligence tools. This motion can be revisited, should a case been made over such a tool that does not pose copyright, ethical and quality concerns."
