The language core team has just released version 5.40.0! Check out the announcement: https://nntp.perl.org/group/perl.perl5.porters/2024/06/msg268252.html

Previously-experimental features now fully supported:

try/catch exception handling
• iterating over multiple values with for loops
• the builtin module and about a dozen functions within

Also, modules can now unit test with the included Test2::Suite without extra dependencies.

Remember also that was a de facto independent republic from 1836 to 1845. They immediately sought annexation by the but faced complications due to the slavery debate and potential war with .

Instead, the Republic of Texas was recognized by the US, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and the UK.

American political winds shifted in 1843, Texas got its statehood (without an intervening territorial phase), and the US got its Mexican war.

Pause to reflect on the controls of Defender, recognized as totally bananas in 1981, let alone today.

A 2D game where you move your ship up/down/left/right, except:

Moving up and down is easy - that's what the joystick does. But that's all! It’s a one-dimensional lever.

Moving left or right is… less easy. The Thrust button pushes you in the direction you're facing. To turn around, slap Reverse, and your entire POV on the playfield flips around the Y axis. Haha!

My point here is that this is something you can’t control, because 1) scrapers will scrape it anyway and 2) 99% of spammers don’t get your email address from scraping.

It’s a waste of time trying to control this. It’s like trying to keep your hair color secret.

I can't imagine working without GenAI any more. I often write quick bash scripts to automate things, but for some reason, the syntax always falls out of my head and I'm constantly looking things up.

Now I just hit ChatGPT and ask it to write the script for me. With the latest version, is usually works perfectly the first time, so long as I craft a good prompt. This is a huge productivity boost.

One of the things I love is when a noob starts watching Trek shows for the first time, and they're like, This is so silly, it's ridiculous, that guy turned into a lizard and impregnated his captain, that lady got possessed by a sex ghost that belonged to her grandma, the captain is sorting a room full of floofy guinea pigs, the ship runs on mushrooms, this theme song makes no sense, and I'm just like Yeah, isn't it great?! There’s certain technology that I earnestly wonder why we abandoned it. For example, digital audio players (DAPs).

These devices provided something smartphones don’t: a distraction-free way of playing music.

And they were way more personal because everything on your DAP was put there by you! They were a collection of your genuine taste!

@atomicpoet The #music industry and listeners have been pining for a “celestial jukebox” since Paul Goldstein coined the term in the early #1990s: https://www.sup.org/books/title/?id=30020
