Can we start a chain of brick and mortar stores that only sells open source electronics?

mrcompletely,

@BlackAzizAnansi maybe partner with one that sells only "dumb" electromechanical appliances, zero silicon washer/dryer/fridge/toaster etc.

I find it especially aggravating when non-US posters scold US voters for planning to vote for Biden.

Look, I get it. Biden sucks. I hate him too. But the alternative this year is Literally Hitler, But Worse. I can assure everyone that allowing Trump to win will be far worse for the USA and the world than anything Biden might do. We do not want a Fascist USA Global Superpower, and that is what we will very likely get with Trump.

Maybe these posters have a voting system and coalition-based Parliament where they live, where they’d be justified in writing off a candidate like Biden. But here in the USA, our voting system is rigged and unforgiving, and we must vote accordingly.

I might also note that telling Biden voters to vote 3rd Party is also a well-known technique used by Republicans and foreign disinformation sources to secure a win for Trump. These posters are inadvertently playing into their hands. https://progressivecafe.social/@TonyStark/111755995729739680

@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@drahardja @Stoneycase @boelder cheers to that. Appreciate the positive conversation and willingness to vote with reality. I'm a lifelong hard left radical who has made relative peace with the realpolitik of voting in the constrained American electoral system - it's no fun, distasteful, and admittedly disheartening at times to continue the holding actions in the face of fascist resurgence, but in life you play the hand you're dealt. The stakes are too high for purity-testing idealism.

Here’s another find from the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show 2024. It’s called pinolite from Austria, and contains dolomite, graphite, and magnesite. I’d never seen it before and thought it was beautiful. More from www.mindat.org/min-26694.html

New official release - Old & in the Way, Sonoma State College, 11.4.1973 (Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, David Grisman, John Kahn)

Released by Acoustic Disk, Grisman's label, as a download. Thanks to @bourgwick for mentioning it in his review of the show, which was of course 50 years ago today.

This is the last full length show by this lineup and that's a real shame. The band is in smoking hot form here, a fantastic listen

When The River Meets The Sea

Like a baby
When it is sleeping
In its loving mother's arms
What a newborn baby dreams
Is a mystery

But his life
Will find a purpose
And in time he'll understand
When the river
Meets
The sea

Alice Coltrane & Carlos Santana
Illuminations albums sessions
unknown dates in 1974, CBS Studios, SF
FLAC download

Alternate mixes, alternate takes, overdubs, preliminary sketches and two new pieces - one improvised and one a new composition, similar to but distinct from "Something About John Coltrane"

Extensive & superb listening notes and interpretive material by @theheatwarps - initial connection and research by @bourgwick - profound thanks to both.

Jerry Garcia & David Grisman
12.17.1990 - Sweetwater, Mill Valley CA
FLAC SBD download
new to circulation

  • first public performance by the Garcia/Grisman group
  • first soundboard recording for this date (the one prior "SBD" fileset is a mislabeled up-close audience tape)
  • there is video of this set which I will link in a reply. Presumably someone will sync this new audio with it before long.

Alice Coltrane, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana and Friends
3.4.1974 Kabuki Theater, SF
Live performance FLAC download

A new to circulation recording of an essentially unknown show. There are not many live recordings of Alice from the 1970s so this is quite special. Quality is good, not great, but also not bad.

Thanks to @bourgwick for the connection and @theheatwarps for expert insight and analysis.

Illuminations album sessions coming tomorrow!

I don't need my feet washed. Could use health care security not tied to my job, safety and freedom for my queer and non white friends and family, housing and food for people on the street, maybe a little world peace, possibly some tacos at lunch. My feet, though, are fine

A lot of us have been wondering whether they'd increase security at the Gorge campground after the violence there earlier this year. Day of show entry times have been extremely long there for years, so adding a close search is going to be really something, but it turns out that's what they're doing. Up to ten minutes per car. So if you're on your way there for the shows, and you're not already pretty damn close to the entry, you might be in for a long day.

Trillium Lake is an overly popular but lovely recreation spot on the south side of Mt. Hood. If you get there early enough, especially on a weekday, you can beat the hordes of yahoos and families and get a nice paddle in. It's a little small really but very pretty as you can see. The north end with the reed and lily pad wetlands is particularly cool, we got to hang out with a blue heron as it poked around for breakfast.

Hannah Waddingham will follow a person of your choosing around while chanting ‘Shame’ for $2600

With crowdfunding we could keep her busy for 100 days at least easily. How many people do we have to do first before we can get to Pete Shapiro?

I really can't believe this is only $2600 - on one hand an insane luxury purchase, but on the other, welllllll....

Molly Tuttle is a fantastic performer. Highly recommended. Very charismatic. Strong band. Excellent singer. Good songs, some very good ones. She's also the best acoustic player of her generation that I've seen so far. Her technique is exquisite without letting it get in the way of art. The moments when she switches into precision flatpicking/crosspick mode are astonishing! Her wrist freezes rock solid and all the motion goes into her fingers. And her left hand reach is immense. Wow!

Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway w/Jerry Douglas - live at Delfest (3 songs)

And now for something completely different! Molly is the up and coming queen of bluegrass. She's a flame throwing virtuoso on acoustic guitar, a flatpicking genius of the first order, and a charismatic bandleader and singer. Since switching to the bluegrass-forward Golden Highway lineup and material she's been taking off like a rocket.

Really enjoyed listening to some Sierra Farrell today. Her voice has an extremely striking Dolly Parton quality to it, very expressive and powerful without going hard. Her most recent album includes this song, it's in a mix of styles from the adjacent to swinging country and across the roots spectrum. She's got a new album coming out in March. Seems like one that could take a swing at country stardom if she wants it

MC5 were much, much more important in the revolutionary sixties/early seventies scene than I think is widely realized. Not the cultural psychedelic dropout revolution of San Francisco but the wild, threatening, often physically aggressive, no fucks given, desolate, desperate radical street freak revolution, the people who fought cops and were beaten and killed for it, the part of "the sixties" that modern radicals would actually respect & has therefore been minimized and sidelined in history

@pluralistic you know how every galactic government in SF has to find its own unique name? The Culture, the Federation etc? My all time favorite is The Gallimaufry, from Phil (Girl Genius, Dragon Magazine, MTG card art etc) Foglio's amazing SF comedy detective series Buck Godot: Zap Gun For Hire. I don't think it's available for free anywhere online rn but it's just fantastic, and shockingly tightly plotted for how zippy it comes across.
