I know there isn't a RAW photo editor that comes close to #Lightroom for #Linux, but which do you prefer and why?

I have tried #Darktable, #Aftershotpro and probably more, but UI seems pretty horrible or development has stopped.

Walking my dog last night and thought the full moon looked a little lopsided. Turns out it was grazing the edge of the Earth’s shadow- I’d completely forgotten about the penumbral lunar eclipse!

(Also a shout-out to the app’s camera- this was first time I’ve ever been able to get a properly exposed picture of the moon from my iPhone)

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@pleiotrope Really nice shot, especially considering the subtlety of the penumbra.

To get good detail on the Moon the trick is to shoot in full daylight. The beginning of the evening twilight is already too late (or too early for the morning twilight).

You can get detail like this:

https://fosstodon.org/@amoroso/111856300335330234

https://fosstodon.org/@amoroso/111375039750406009

https://fosstodon.org/@amoroso/111177583395429261

https://fosstodon.org/@amoroso/110848821952631351

pleiotrope,
@pleiotrope@fosstodon.org avatar

@amoroso thank you!

And that’s a great tip (and great photos!) It makes sense- minimizing the difference in brightness between the sky and moon would let autoexposure choose a better starting point.

@philhoefer Ich ecke manchmal an mit meinen kontroversen Meinungen. Aber für mich gehört das zur Kunst dazu.

nickmurison,

I'm currently trying to rid myself of and and move to and instead.

One issue I've stumbled on is that I've historically used the image Title instead of the image Description, but both LR and DT have tended to write the image Title to the or metadata categories, not to . As of right now only seems to read tags, so my photo titles aren't showing up when a theme tries to display captions.

Going through 100s of photos and copying the Title to the Description would be a royal pain. But luckily comes to the rescue. For an entire directory of JPEG files I can simply run:

exiftool -tagsFromFile @ -'ImageDescription<Title' *.jpg

This copies the content of the Title tag into the ImageDescription tag. And now the captions show up :)

nickmurison,

@gsuberland Ooh good point! I haven't yet found a way to copy the Title from e.g. IPTC to Title in EXIF, if that's even possible and would solve the issue...

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@nickmurison almost all tags in Exif are ASCII, which is one of the main reasons XMP gained popularity.

Windows XP got around this by using nonstandard tag variants with "XP" as a prefix, e.g. "XPTitle", "XPSubject", etc. which use UCS2 encoding. these were later added to the Exif standard (somewhere around 2.0, iirc) but I don't know how many pieces of software check for the XP prefixed variant and decode it correctly.

If you use Lightroom or other photo cataloging software, now is a good time to update your presets to apply 2024 copyright metadata.

Heads up for users on — the Sonoma v14.2 update will break Tethered Capture and there's no workaround.

Customer sent me a backup of his catalog and photos, to do some reorganization for them.

On a Extreme 4TB — yep, the infamous one.

EDIT: it had already been "updated" by SanDisk (ie. failed before, was sent in, came back "fixed").

And guess what happened next (and only after I spent two billable hours on it, of course)... of course it failed. 🙄 Good thing it was just a backup!

milan,

the #lightroom preview thing is so god damn sluggish since the last update ... back until cursor moves, only a few tiles for a few moments, this time it just remained grey for a while ... quality software right there.

milan,
@milan@social.tchncs.de avatar

@alexskunz i have moved it to an external nvme and increased it.. also hit the optimize button... a quick test still shows black flashes and weird tile lag of the preview but its gone in the moment... question is whether it will stay like this, didnt really pay close attention to when it starts to occour

alexskunz,
@alexskunz@mas.to avatar

@milan I'm really not sure what you're seeing and what could be causing rendering issues in Develop (other than hardware problems😬)

what bugs me is that #lightroom preview and export often get moiré for my lowlight images. of course thats because i try to brighten things up alot ... however these effects are never visible while developing the images. its only after the fact that i get greeted by this. and no, i dont sharpen on export and rarely sharpen more than 50

milan,

@holger hmm 6400 felt pretty high already ... doesnt explain why it isnt visible on develop which makes it even more frustrating :(

but yea gonna experiment with it 👍

alexskunz,
@alexskunz@mas.to avatar

@milan interesting. The patterning effect in the dark areas on the right?

Are you using lens profile corrections for these?

And what happens if you used AI-Denoise to reduce noise overall?

hikingdude,
@hikingdude@mastodon.social avatar

Just a quick from yesterday night's session. Details to come later. For those of you following me for a while: I took them shortly before getting into the rainy stormy weather, recently 🙂

I hope you enjoy them. I really liked to have/see them side by side. And all the memories are immediately back and make me smile.

apfelkraut,

The pure number of opportunities in #darktable can be slightly overwhelming when switching from restricted tools like #Lightroom or #CaptureOne ... and why does my initial RAW look so different from the JPEG preview? The workflow guide within the official #documentation is so helpful to get stunning edits within seconds. Yet another great work of the @darktable community: https://darktable-org.github.io/dtdocs/en/overview/workflow/process/ #RTFM

apfelkraut,

@pieq @darktable Indeed, automagically approximating the embedded JPEG preview of a RAW would be a great starting point for own edits to further tweak the original look as coming from the camera, but I assume it is not that easy to achieve and still looking for an implementer, see e.g. https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/issues/14922

darktable,

@apfelkraut @pieq I think the author of the feature request greatly underestimates the complexity of the in-camera jpeg engine.

Maybe (maybe!!) If you choose the most neutral of your in-camera jpeg renderings it might be achievable, but once you get into the Fuji film simulations it will be rather difficult.

If you like the jpeg look then shoot it!

Another photo taken as the light is all but disappearing. This was at around 9.30pm as Lopa strolled around the garden upsetting the gulls that were swooping overhead. Taken at a stupid ISO 40000. Lopa popped by at around 9.30 tonight, just about in time to catch the very last of the failing light. This was taken with ISO 32000 and cleaned up in #Lightroom which does a pretty good job these days. http://www.permuted.org.uk/photography/fox-of-the-day/ #fox #nature #wildlife #photography

recently i have complained about the preview in turning black until the cursor moves (or it takes a few seconds or glitches until it reveals the current content) – i have since realized that affinity photo is affected as well, althrough not as bad. are there some owners who know something on the issue? i am not sure how to look it up right now, this is quite frustrating...
