Thailand's Senate will hold an ad hoc session next month to vote on the marriage equality bill. If it passes Thailand will become the first country in Southeast Asia to legalise same-sex marriage
Almost everyone I know my age back home is deeply, deeply burnt out and crunchy; and yet I still don’t believe there is space there to thrive as someone who actively chooses the opposite of the Singapore Dream
The saddest message I ever got was from an acquaintance who wrote to say they valued me sharing publicly about my health challenges previously as a founder, because they literally had a terminal illness and yet they felt like a loser for not working past it
There is something deeply broken about what that society values
All of our stories and myths are about hard work and sacrifice. coastal immigrant chinese society (the bulk of the population) also deeply values 吃苦 (eating the bitter pill; sucking it up). Anything that’s about putting yourself over family, about being comfortable, is excess, luxury and suspiciously frivolous. I would even say some people have internalized this to mean if you’re not actively suffering daily, you’re doing something wrong.
“Vast concessions in #Malaysia's forests threaten millions of hectares of rich natural habitats and risk the country's commitment to 50 per cent forest cover, a report warned Tuesday (May 28).
NGO RimbaWatch said its analysis of concessions in the country's forest showed up to 3.2 million hectares could be slashed, potentially unleashing enormous carbon emissions and compromising key animal habitats.” https://www.channelnewsasia.com/sustainability/vast-concessions-threaten-malaysias-forests-report-4368726
If you’re in Singapore, like din tai fung, but don’t like how crowded / expensive their restaurants get: here’s a hawker stall that does functionally the same food for $4ish. Will also be crowded, but it won’t be $40
@kofanchen sort of fast food version of the TW DTF. Only the dumplings and fried rice are good usually, the other stuff varies on branch. I’m glad it exists but in places with many Chinese options I’d rather go to a non-chain place. In less Chinese places, any DTF is better than none
I’m annoyed that I wasn’t into birding when I was mostly in my part of the world. Now it’s going to take so much effort and time to go do that. But my dream birding trips in SE Asia right now:
I’m hoping to one day have the same familiarity with LATAM, as I do with almost all of SE and S Asia. Being able to map flights and trains and know how much things cost intuitively.. maybe in 5 years I’ll get there.
