So 's new app needs your health and fitness info. It also needs your browsing history and your location, and your purchases, and...well, it seems to need everything. If you want to get fully creeped out, here's the whole policy: https://privacycenter.instagram.com/policy/.

@harriettmb @protonmail That is horrifying.

@protonmail Threads doesn't "need your health and fitness info," that is saying that Facebook already has your health and fitness info and will associate that pre-existing data with whoever you say you are when you sign up for Threads. Unless they already know you're someone other than who you say you are, in which case all the data about both those people gets associated with you.

chromatic,

@protonmail and that is part of the reason why we still don't have Threads in the European Union.
@Grandalf

stickety_pooh,

@protonmail This alone is enough to put me off!

@protonmail I wouldn't touch it with any pole, proverbial or otherwise. They know enough about my driving habits

cja,

@protonmail when i was a kid technology used to be a fun thing...

0xSilkRoad,

@protonmail Meta is ngmi

coffeeaddict,

@protonmail What does this actually entail for the user? I don't think Facebook can access my Strava or Google Fit data, nor my payment data as long as I don't use Instagram's payment services. They can't know my browsing history either except for what I click when browsing through the platform.
It seems like they want to know literally everything but what they can actually know is more limited than that.

TetraShot7,

@protonmail This is just ridiculous

trirwin,

@protonmail I understand sharing just enough personal information to establish yourself as a legit user.. But this is way over the top. I tried Threads for twenty minutes yesterday and dropped it. Thinking about dropping fb but I have contact with so many family and friends..

WillA763,

@protonmail I will never understand how people rush to this. I know many of them are frustrated with Twitter, which is understandable, but all you are really doing is exchanging one centralized spyware app for another (and run by people who ultimately share the same corporatist value system).

iemoe7bi,

@protonmail why do you rewrite emails when people utilize their own pgp key, and why are a bunch of new federated accounts telling people that they should just upload their private key to proton?

irena_chris,

@protonmail I'll will never believe on Meta's stuff no more... :thinkerguns:

@protonmail the reddit app permissions descriptions seem to have changed since July 1st. Positive I looked at them then and thought browser history, nope. Now wondering if the same permissions are covered under the description other user generated content.

richardazia,

@protonmail You should get our health info too. Is this person calm and dry, or is their heart rate racing and they're clammy. If they're calm let them log in, if they're nervous, keep them out.
"Oh that's strange. Normally this user has a heart rate of 42 bpm and it's now 70... let's flag it as suspicious." ;-). Three factor authentication. Is the password correct, is the otp correct, is the health profile consistent.

This is a joke response. I am not encouraging this. 2fa is good.

@protonmail creepy but not surprised. A typical Facebook/Meta move 👿🤑💀

@protonmail genuinely surprised how non-freaked out people are Also genuinely surprised that I’m surprised ….

izzyamar,

@protonmail These are all the same data the Instagram app itself needs and links to you. It's entirely too much info for an app to require. I'm not sure why people are freaking out specifically about Threads, but not IG, though.

Oh but click a little deeper and it is ever so much more reassuring.

If they want to Federate in the future, doesn't that inherently mean it will be accessible by third party apps?

dri22,

@protonmail There is a reason why i hated Meta...

@protonmail

In case it isn't obvious, Facebook and Instagram collect the exact same data.

GoblinMode,

@protonmail a few days out the door and it’s already as toxic as twitter.
