This year has been a proving ground for federated social media. Platforms like /x and have faltered in an attempt to leverage their good will into something their users don't want. People are ready to begin to demonetize human interaction, and seek out people-oriented networks instead of advertising platforms. The has shown it can adapt, scale, and help people connect and share, which is the point of media from the start.

Now THAT'S how you spin a dreidel!

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

via Jasmin Moghbeli @NASA

NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli took the opportunity to bring a beloved Hanukkah game to new heights last week when she shared a video of a dreidel spinning in zero gravity aboard the International Space Station. In place of lighting a real menorah, which cannot be done aboard the space station, Moghebli marked the holiday by sticking a felt cutout of a menorah onto a window in the Space Station and “lighting” it each night with stick-on flames. Moghebli shared the video of the zero-gravity dreidel spinning in front of the felt menorah on X, formerly Twitter, with the caption: “Happy Hanukkah from the @Space_Station!! Real candles not allowed! The video shows the dreidel spinning at a consistent pace in midair for close to a minute before it eventually bumps into the camera and slows down, tilting onto its side. Moghbeli is a flight engineer and mission commander for SpaceX’s Crew-7 which departed for the Space Station in August of this year. During a press conference in July, she said that her family had made the felt menorah for her so that she could be included in their Hanukkah celebrations from afar. https://www.timesofisrael.com/astronaut-celebrates-hanukkah-with-zero-gravity-dreidel-spin/

October 7 deniers testify at a public city council meeting in Oakland.

If you are not paying attention to the rising leftist antisemitism, this video may be shocking to you.

Denial of the Holocaust, the Farhud, and other atrocities against the Jews is nothing new. It's shocking that it has become so aggressive and so widespread so quickly. It's been 55 days. There is extensive video, including footage taken by the perpetrators themselves.

Truly sickening.

It's hard to overstate the importance that Sesame Street played in my life.

My parents had VHS tapes shipped internationally, and my parents got not only an American TV, but an American VCR, in France, in 1979 so I could watch it.

When I was a small child, Sesame Street was one of my favorite shows. I enjoyed the animation and complexity, not only the word lessons but life lessons too.

And it absolutely had an impact on how I saw the world, and probably why NYC feels more like home than anywhere else in the world to me.

I was too old for Sesame Street when Elmo became prominent, but I saw the cultural shift it created. I didn't like Elmo or the direction the show was taking.

I'm glad other people are talking about it, because Sesame Street plays such a huge rule in my childhood.

I've been seeing a new rash of and inversion on mastodon recently. Here are a few reminders:

Anne Frank was murdered by during the lifetime of the current sitting American president. It's not ancient history.

Six million people were killed by the Nazis. The current world Jewish population is still less than it was in 1939.

Palestinian population is about 6 times larger now than in 1939.

Nazis did lots of bad things, but (I can't believe this has to be said) the main bad thing that they did was murder most of the Jewish people in Europe. Please do not compare people to Nazis who are not attempting to murder ALL of an ethnicity. To do so trivializes the reality of the and is probably antisemitic.

War is hell and there has never been a war without civilian casualties. Israel has made extraordinary efforts to minimize civilian casualties on both sides, while Hamas has made extraordinary efforts to maximize civilian casualties on both sides.

rabbinathan,
@rabbinathan@babka.social avatar

@bhasic @CivilityFan @gcblasing @Ulrich_the_Elder

This is shockingly wrong.

"Peleshet" refers to a Grecian sea people that may have conquered and settled five cities of the Southern Mediterranean coast (in and around modern day Gaza) in the 12th century. It was not a term for the entire region until it was adopted by the Romans in the post-Second Temple period.

The Israelites were a group of Canaanite shepherds that emerged as a distinct group by at least the 14th-13th century, 200 years before the Pelishti arrived (possibly much earlier)

Modern day Palestinians are not related to the Pelishti, who vanished in the 6th-5th century after the Babylonian conquest. They are likely descended from Canaanites and the Arabs, who conquered and settled Roman Palestine in the 7th century CE.

rabbinathan,
@rabbinathan@babka.social avatar

@Ulrich_the_Elder

Fact check: The Jewish population under the Nazis declined by 63%. About 2/3 of European Jews were murdered between 1939 and 1945.

The Palestinian population has increased by 571% since 1950, and has not declined in any of the past 50 years.

Holocaust inversion is a form of antisemitism. #🟦

@ants_are_everywhere @actuallyautistic

I can be more explicit in my phrasing, since you've taken this quote out of the context that made it clear:

You've been told in direct and caring ways exactly what is expected of you if you wish to be an advocate and an ally and avoid harming a vulnerable minority.

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but virtually everyone in this conversation is neurodivergent, myself included. You're not only ignoring, gaslighting, victim shaming, gatekeeping, and tone policing an ethnic minority. You're also ignoring, gaslighting, victim shaming, gatekeeping, and tone policing members of the ND community.

So, for the sake of the autistic community, I will go ahead and tell you exactly how you're supposed to behave. You're supposed to stop gas lighting, victim-shaming, gatekeeping, and tone policing. You're supposed to stop doubling down on bigoted behaviors once they're brought to your attention and correct them. Otherwise, you're just a bigot.

Just memorize your social anxiety away!

Why did I get to age 40 not knowing that most of my crippling social anxiety could be cured by simply making flash cards of the faces of all the people I need to interact with at work or at other events and simply memorizing all their names?

This probably won’t for everyone but it’s shocking effective it has been for me. And it’s not like I’m particularly bad with names when learning them “naturally” (although I’m slower than average) 1/

rabbinathan,
@rabbinathan@babka.social avatar

@futurebird

I also find it helpful to draw little family trees to help remember relationships between people. "Hi, Name, how is your son/friend/boss, Name?" I even do this for my own distant relatives.

    That's like calling Westboro Baptist Church the "real Christians." Neturei Karta is mysogynistic, xenophobic, hateful to everyone who believes differently than them, associates with radical right wing groups, Holocaust denial, Hezbollah militants, etc. They believe that Hamas terrorism is a punishment sent by God to kill Jews for being secular.

    Their theology is that the secular State of Israel is interfering with God's plan for the messiah. So basically anything that helps to delegitimize and dismantle the State of Israel is helping of God's plan. That's why they (100 or so of the activist branch) support anyone who can help destroy Israel.

    They have been denounced by every other Jewish group, including the leftist, pro-Palestinian +972 magazine referred to above, and by the ultra-orthodox (and anti-Zionist) Satmar Hassidic group.
