If Twitter and Meta are trying to be the Hilton (we'll do everything for you), the #fediverse is more of a co-op: we need to all pitch in and do some work sometimes.
That's why our #UX can never be quite as smooth and simple, but as in a co-op, the extra involvement is a strong community builder and a reward in itself.
@david_megginson honestly, I disagree with the framing, even though I agree with the direction.
Twitter and Meta are not a "Hilton", in the sense that they are not actually focusing on what people with accounts on their services want or need (key word: "enshittification").
And I do think that fedi's UX could be very smooth and simple, perhaps even smoother than over in big platforms world, since for example fedi does not need to deploy dark patterns to trick people into agreeing to things.
@rysiek Granted, there is some accidental complexity still in the fediverse, but much of it is essential.
For example, there's no shortcut around requiring people to choose an instance (just as they must for email) — that's necessary to keep a federated architecture truly decentralised. And there will always be more cognitive load when you don't get a list of "recommendations" to follow. And some usability compromises are necessary to reign in bandwidth & CPU costs for smaller instances.
