Don't learn , they say. It's a dead language, they say. There are no jobs, they add. Learn instead. It's much better. Jobs are plentiful.

I don't know if it's because of this or some other reason, but we have had great success with finding PHP developers and have had an awful time trying to find JS developers. Not that we don't get applicants, but when you get to the interviews, it's like ... not good.

So go ahead and learn PHP.

@queenofnewyork @gizmomathboy Same for as well.

Just because there's a surfeit of postings doesn't mean the mercenary that pay attention to such things will land one.

is about languages as much as carpentry is about hammers or astronomy is about telescopes. But you wouldn't know it from the carpetbagger , shallow pundits, and mindless parrots.

@queenofnewyork @gizmomathboy Simple economics: A commodity market is driven by demand for easily interchangeable resources, with the price for each decided by the market as a whole. If it has a huge supply meeting huge demand, the only important factor is price.

If you don't mind being a commodity, go learn or whatever’s in the top 10 this month. But don't pretend you're practicing . You're practicing arbitrage.

@mjgardner @gizmomathboy It kind of amuses me that almost all the devs I interviewed say the thing they don’t like most about JavaScript is it being loosely typed. Like, why are you working with the language if you don’t like that fundamental aspect of it? Yes, there’s Typescript, but my loose-type-loving self thinks it’s a solution for a problem I don’t have. I still typically advance them in the process, but I get more excited when I get a unique answer.

@queenofnewyork @gizmomathboy Did you then ask which strongly-typed language they prefer and what they’ve done with it?

If they don’t have a coherent answer, they’re just parroting received wisdom instead of demonstrating their own.

@queenofnewyork I’m having a very difficult time finding very senior-level IC roles (i.e., Staff, Principal, etc.), as a PHP developer, so I’m having to apply for Python/Java/etc. positions. If you’re looking for any very senior PHP devs, let me know. 😁

@ramsey @queenofnewyork based on what I’m seeing in my network I would venture to say it’s the “very senior” part of that that is the problem more so than the part. :(

Crell,

@cabbey @ramsey @queenofnewyork Most very senior jobs are at larger corporations, most of which are either fully bought in to the MS ecosystem (hence C#) or the JVM ecosystem.

Its disappointing.

@Crell @cabbey @queenofnewyork Or Python, JavaScript, or Ruby on Rails (for some reason).

@ramsey @queenofnewyork Time to switch languages again?

@queenofnewyork agreed. PHP dev here. It's not dead.

@codemonkeymike @queenofnewyork Fellow PHP dev here. If PHP is dead, then I wonder why these recruiters are chasing me on LinkedIn with their PHP job offers....
