Remember Vine?

Twitter bought it and shut it down wasting $30 million dollars

Years later a same sort app comes to market with way worse privacy issues called TikTok

Big tech buying everything ruins so much potential

@stux the creative destruction of capitalism is marvelous, eh?

falcennial,
@falcennial@mastodon.social avatar

@stux that is good facts to a useful conclusion. there is another part of this problem whereby users are severely uneducated about things like privacy issues and technology ethics and are thus easily manipulated by the tens of millions into wasteful and harmful behaviours.

euromec,

@stux How are you getting on with Goldfish?

DryBird227,

@stux I feel you. I really do. But it isn't just big tech. They're just the biggest jock's of the moment.

If someone were to create a tv show, youtube channel or podcast devoted solely to talking about the dumbest/dumb business decisions business people have made across the globe over humanity's lifespan.

They would quite literally...NEVER run out of content. lol

@stux except Vine was just 6 seconds (iirc?) and square format, whereas TikTok was initially like 30 seconds mobile videos, and now 1–2 minutes.

I also don't think Vine included such a great algorithm, which is yeah, a huge privacy violation, but it what makes TikTok so great — it literally adopts for you, isolating you from content you don't want to see, and pushing more content that you'll most likely enjoy.

This is how it usually goes and I think TikTok is a huge improvement on Vine idea.

@brawaru @stux none of those are things where Vine couldn't improve. But Twitter was so scared of its success that it preferred to buy it to shut it down rather than make it better.

It's kind of like Clubhouse, which was a neat idea, but implementation was lacking. But then other services took the idea (e.g., Discord and Xitter) and made it times better (well, for Xitter it was good before elmo). Just a lifecycle of these products, I guess.

@stux Having $30 million on hand just to buy something & shut it down is. . obscene.
